Great video as always. Naughty Dog trying to make a Live Service TLoU title was never going to work out. It's apparently no longer good enough for a multiplayer game/portion to be fun and engaging, it also has to be designed to make you play it every day for the rest of your life. I've been looking forward to this multiplayer game for a long time. I NEVER play multiplayer anything, but I played the crap out of TLoU multi. It was fun as hell. It's basically an online, 3rd person, team-deathmatch stealth battle. It's probably the last multiplayer game I've played other than a little bit of Rocket League back in the day. Sony's GAAS initiative is gonna be their new Cell processor. A huge waste of focus and resources that is going to perch the company on the edge of a cliff. Also, Banishers has a bad name, but it doesn't really warrant being mentioned in the same breath as those other games. I'm pretty sure that game's gonna turn out pretty great.

Cell was the least of the problems with the PS3 launch though, and in fact, it was an incredible processor bottlenecked by a mediocre GPU solution provided by Nvidia.

@@FLACO1942 I'm not saying the Cell processor was flatly a bad processor. It was just a very costly element of R&D that was largely matched/generally upstaged by a comparatively cheap/off-the-shelf alternative in the case of the 360. The bottleneck for the PS3 was really that games needed to be threaded in a way that was completely different than anything before it to reach some degree of parity with 360. Sony not realizing how much of a hassle they had set out to make for software development on their platform would be an amazing thing to see the timeline of internal fallout for. Just imagine how different things might be if Xbox hadn't succeeded in making such a flurry of own goals since. I'm honestly really glad that they fucked it all up, I don't know about you.

I know some people were excited for the return of Factions but I couldn't care less - I hope I'm not tempted to play some GaaS title to get Last of Us story/lore. Kyle makes a great point that GaaS need to keep their players happy and spending on cosmetics but the world of TLOU just doesn't fit right with... dance emotes.

A Last of Us anime aesthetic would be hilarious. I really wish Sony never put Bungie in charge of this, they should share insight and just be advisors not judges, I was far more excited for what ND was selling me on than anything Bungie’s ever done, regardless of it’s long term monetization/engagement potential. It worries me that even after ND changed course from a Factions mode to a GAAS for Sony, it still wasn’t enough, Sony seemingly cares about the money more than the art form. They don’t want Last of Us to win best multiplayer or get a GOTY nomination, they just want Fortnite/Destiny money. It’s surprising cause that’s not how they treat their single player games, which ended up making a lot for Sony because of their creative freedom. If Jim is mostly to blame for this, then hopefully the next leader will see how awesome ND’s work looks, take it off ice and release it before it gets retooled into a generic grind.

Amazon had that game called Crucible that failed so hard that they took it out of beta and cancelled it before release. It looked like if you stuck Destiny, Overwatch, and a few other of the most popular team shooter games into a blender. It looked utterly creatively bankrupt, no identity whatsoever. That's the problem with AI and even execs that want "that thing, but we'll sell it instead". AI has severe limitations on creativity because all it learns is from the existing pool. If you want AI to draw you a wizard it's probably going to pop out some sort of Gandalf or some sort of Harry Potter, because that's what's already popular and what the machines use as a base. With game the result is a rapid bottleneck that quickly oversaturates game markets, leading to HUGE crashes of these AAA $50+ million dollar games that resemble a cargo cult of what they think a video game is rather than making a real video game.

I'm still playing The Last of Us mp to this day. There simply isn't any other shooter that has given the highs it has and the gunplay is some of the best out there still to this day. You still get in a game fairly fast as well.

You know the interesting thing about "games as a service", to me, is that it could mean free updates but buy new characters like in Genshin and Fortnite; or a complete multiplayer but add DLC maps or characters like SF6, COD, or Overwatch. So when i hear "games as a service" it's such a wide variety of possible meanings, that it loops around to mean literally nothing. If they wont tell me their business plan, then there's no reason to feel any confidence in their business plan. Btw i guess i technically like games a services. If i like the game, and i get more of that game, it better than waiting for a sequel that more or may not improve on the original. But dont expect me to get hyped over the words "games as a service". Even investors gotta be nervous when they hear that now, after all these years of so many empty promises.

lol I know the anime comment is just a joke, but I do believe that having anime tropes to use as foundation for instant likeability is a huge factor into making people quickly fall in love with all the gacha characters in Mihoyo games. They even rely on expy (different versions of the same character) to make their character instantly recognizable throughout the Mihoyo "extended universe". Of course, they also make their games fun and interesting, which is a fundamental thing a lot of GaaS ignore, but almost instant likeability does depend on leaning into people's expectations, and anime has been creating clear and easily recognizable tropes for decades.

HoYoverse's live service stuff isn't great because its "anime" Kyle. Its great because at no point are you EVER forced to play with others. The games can be fully played solo, sure, you need an active internet connection at all times but are never forced into co-op nor is the game's entire design built around co-op either. I have mentioned to PlayStation on many of their official blog posts over the past 2 years, that if ANY of the GAAS games they are making force you into multiplayer whatsoever, I will NEVER be touching them. I won't even be adding them to my PSN account like Fortnite, the COD one, the EA one, whatever Ubisoft's current one is that will be dead in a month's time from now. Thank goodness PlayStation seem to have realised all the time and money they have wasted on trying to figure this GAAS nonsense out when they should have been simply making games that MILLIONS of us will buy on day one like Insomniac's nearly 3 games released this gen so far. Why else would they be kicking Jim Ryan out the door and hopefully course correcting ASAP, (again, something I have been begging them to do on most of their official blog posts the past 2 years since that disastrous "An update on PlayStation studios games" one they did in June 2021).

Nice thinking. I think optional multiplayer is the way to go also. Games like Elden Ring, Armored Core, Baldur's Gate 3, Monster Hunter World, and Genshin Impact, can all be played solo. But you can play together for coop or PVP when you want to hang out with a friend.

As a big example and one Kyle used too, Suicide Squad was completely dead for me in 2020 when they announced it as a 4 player forced co-op game "but can be played solo we swear" lol. It makes no difference when the entire game is designed around thr thing, think the awful co-op character in Resident Evil 5 and 6 that you can never get rid off "playing solo" destroying the genre the game is supposed to be. With Suicide Squad it took people 2 and a half years later to see the first ingame reveal to all admit how wrong they were and the backlash was just beautiful. They can do all the minor tweaks they want, I will never be playing it even when its dropped on Plus for no cost to me.

That "naughty dog have you tried anime?" Comment made me think about if we had more anime in video games. Imo the ultimate collab would be if platinum games partnered studio trigger to make a flashy new game with crazy combat. Heck i'm just picturing a more anime hack and slash version of cyberpunk, that is more like edge runners than the base game. That would be awesome. But also could just be a new ip with cool stylised visuals. Although tbf if we just got nier automata 2 i would also be left pretty satisfied.

Unless word of mouth says that's it's good, but that's unlikely.

Sony looking to Bungie as the final arbiters of what games as a service will or won't work seems.... bad? Destiny 2 is great and cool, i haven't played it in 4 years and have no interest in going back to it. unless you really are able to keep up with stuff, it's so hard to get back to a game like that. the Destiny 2 i left in 2019 straight up doesn't exist in 2023. that blows. I can still go play Titanfall 2, or The Last of Us (1) Factions and i'd rather those experiences vs a game that can ship of theseus itself so much in half a decade that the only shit that is still there is the most basic fundamentals of how it handles. whatever this last of us multiplayer could have been was thrown out when an undisclosed person or group of people from Bungie saw a game in production and decided there weren't enough hooks to keep players engaged. just ugh, sucks for the devs that lost their jobs, sucks for the devs who have spent *years* making a game that will likely never come out (or has been so thoroughly scaled back that it wasn't what they were originally building) and sucks for players who were excited by what that game could have been.
