well, what did you want, the film was shot during world war 2, in my opinion in Kazakhstan, there were few resources for filming. so the armor looks funny, German helmets in my opinion generally made of buckets for carrying water, Russian shields like they were made of pressed carton

Saw this movie on PBS in the early 70s and found it fascinating and technically a triumph (though highly stylized) the imagery and cinematography was pretty much before it’s time and on par with any of David Lean’s films including “Dr.Zhivago”and “Lawrence of Arabia”……the main character Nevsky is done as a stage performance with a great deal of heroic posturing and body language (which can be said of a number of characters,after all its basically a propaganda film)but overall a truly great film with outstanding battle sequences and a well choreographed climax…

Most of the "Teutonic " army at Lake Piepus was composed of Estonians and Danes. Im painting up a 28mm scale Teutonic knights wargaming army just now. Based for "lion rampant" rules, 2 units of Teutonic knights on foot, one on horse, one unit of Teutonic crossbowmen and for a bit of colour(remember though many teutonic knights had their own heraldry on sheilds)a unit of mounted Danish knights. After that im making a similar sized Russian army-i need to make them to get my boyfriend to grudgingly play the game with me lol! He has no interest in history or wargaming. If in the future i increase the size of the teutonic army i will add livonians and estonians. And volunteer crusaders from western europe.

The film "Alexander Nevsky" was shot even before the outbreak of World War II. But obviously the breath of war was already felt in Stalin's offices. And therefore, the "party and government" gave a state order to shoot a historical patriotic film. In the spirit of the times. Filming took place in the spring. At Mosfilm Studio. It was very hot and some extras artists lost consciousness from the severity of armor and heat. But nobody saw it on the big screen. ✌️🤗

For anybody who doesn’t know. This battle from the movie “Alexander Nevsky” and it’s based off the “Battle on the ice” That was fought between the Novgorod Republic and the Livonian Order on April 5th 1242 A.D. The reason why this battle happened was because the Novgorodians Were destroying Livonian City’s For Vengeance against the Livonian Order for attacking Novgorodian Temples. Then the Livonians Traced them down all the way to lake Peipus which was frozen at the time and then they fought there. The Novgorodians won the battle after managing to surround the Livonian Troops and making them retreat. But most of them drowned when retreating due to the ice breaking. After the battle the Livonian Order gave back all stolen land back to the Novgorod Republic.
