Seiko SKX173 Review - The Best Diving Watch from Seiko?

Best thing about the 173 is that the lume pip on the second hand is where it should be rather than the 007/009 having it at the (idiotic IMHO) rear or counterweight position. BTW the Seiko's are 'Divers' ... meaning EACH watch is tested for WR integrity unlike only samples/batches tested by Orient, for example, who can therefore only claim a WR rating.

That lume looks different, too. A bit neater than on the 007/009 and greener.

Brian Hinder so agree with you, rear pip is some backward engineering and design. Best place would be to position it so it does not obscure any markers as it revolves around the dial.

I have the 173 Seiko and I just had my watch serviced with a sapphire crystal installed and it's like having a brand new watch all over again!

You didn't even tell how big the case was! 40mm? 41mm? How thick? How far from lug to lug?

Fun mods for this watch: - hacking movement - flat sapphire with AR coating - signed crown - coin edge bezel - Pepsi bezel insert - nylon Zulu strap or Uncle Seiko z199 bracelet The result would be a more reliable, hardy and convenient watch with classic looks.

Hey Josh nice video! I personally don't own a SKX, I wanted to get one a while back and when I tried it on something just didn't look or feel right. I ended up ordering a way more expensive diver from Seiko the sbdc029 (shogun), and recently I got the sbdc033 (blue sumo or blumo) I would say that the sumo is a better value for money I know it costs twice as the SKX but it's also half the price of the shogun. Comparing the sumo to my friends SKX really shows the superiority of the sumo in every way, specially the bezel rotation and the awesome 6R15 movement.

I like the Turtles case design more than SKX's. I realize that the Turtle is about twice the price but I still think it's worth it. I own both but I would get the Turtle over the SKX any day. I have the PADI turtle with a red Hirsch runner leather strap and I think it looks gorgeous and playful.

Another good review Josh. I thought about buying this watch for a beater but choice to spend $25.00 more for a Citizen NY0040-17L. I"m still waiting for it to get hear from Germany. Did I hear you're a engineer? I have a 22 year old son that's an engineer. He has one of the new Orient Ray II.

Seiko Divers are Fantastic! I think most would love the skx173 but the movement seems somewhat outdated, I feel the Seiko Turtle SRP777 with hacking and HW is a much better buy (and if you want to go Quartz the Citizen BN0150-28E Promaster was surprisingly on the same level as my Turtle). The Seiko Turtle line (with Padi versions) have been the best value in divers at the $200-$400 range in my opinion. I'm hoping Seiko comes out with a new monster line with multiple colors also.

Well one can get a 42mm BRASS Armida A1 with a Seiko NH36 (hacking/winding) with sapphire for $329.

Well I got 23 years worth of everyday wear out of mine before giving up the ghost, it is now at Seiko repair center getting new life put back into it! was it the most accurate watch, hell no but 23 years of going going going then gone, I may buy another then again upgrading to a sapphire crystal is a better idea. oh great review by the way.

Nice watch, good review. Interesting comments about winding the watch v wear it to get it going. My Seamaster '67 gets wound, but my Tissot PRC216 starts moving as soon as I pick it up. The hands look off white; are they?

Great review. However, I do think it is the best value in the market. Hard to find a better watch for the money. Other then it's movement, I do think it is close to 10 in all the other categories. Just my opinion. The 173 has been overshadowed by the 007 and 009. Keep up the great video's.

+sunset I think it doesnt offer as much as say an Orient Ray II. But the skx173 is much older and much differently designed, so it may not be a fair comparison. Rubber straps are too disposable this comes in a metal bracelet which is much more durable and long lasting

IMHO, the skx is only good for modding. 225$ for a non hack non wind non sapphire and a rubber strap is not a good value. same money gets you a hack and wind bracelet mako ii or ray ii and some left over money for a nice strap. you can also get a black bay parnis homage with a miyota 9015 for 225$. the best (affordable) seiko diver is the sumo. everything about the sumo is above average for the money.
