De-escalating is the best self defense technique there is. It should be taught as the first lesson in every martial art studio.

I was in a nightclub toilet once, and I saw three guys beating up on one man. I remonstrated with them, but they just ignored me. Then this guy who was literally seven feet tall came out of one of the toilet cubicles, and saw what was happening. He was like "take it easy guys." Then he looked at the guys who was taking teh beating, and said "Its OK, you can walk out behind n me if you want to." Nobody questioned this when it happened.

After near 20 yrs of door work i thing to remember, go to work and do 1000 nights and do everything right, you became a hero/gentleman/nice guy. Then 1 night someone deserves a slap and you slap em little to hard you come a thug/bully/nasty etc

It's great that he was allowed something like 15 minutes to talk people into getting kicked out. I had issues with managers pushing to get them kicked out straight away. I'm like, yes, he is not staying in here, but I don't want to get my head punched in on the way he gets out. That, and I stood around all night, I have the time to talk to this person and convince them to leave quietly.

Great discussion. But think how often he talks about legal liability. If you know martial arts you have to be careful not to hurt people.

I used to go to this bar in Mexico and if anyone ever caused any trouble, the bartender would put a one-inch hole thru their chest with a 12Ga shotgun slug.

Worked the doors for several years, there is no knowing when its going to go IMO. You have to wait for them to move against you. So many times look absolutely similar but the guy is just acting out bravado. Helps being big. Not being frightened to be late into the fight, you got back-up, you try to make sure they don't stand close by aggressively pushing away if need be, so if they come back you know its started. Aint no 15 minute talk to get a guy out of a club. If he can talk for 5 he thinks he can talk you out of your decision. It's hard business when you got regulars who are a bit gangster, but I've always found them to be least of problems, they want to sling their dope and want to keep it as their regular. The purpose of dragging out I always found a good defence against an actual fight.

The truth of the matter is that 9 times out of 10 one has to have the right predesposition / temperament (read be a baddy) to make a bouncer. I have worked in that environment and it was about the filthiest job I had ever done. I only managed to endure 2 to 3 weeks after which I walked out in disgust.

What was filthy about it? Were the bouncer's corrupt?

@@MaharlikaAWA "Guests" at the door can be pretty rough, abusive and aggressive, and bouncers have to deal with this being equally so. The bouncers often encounter nasty situations which a person wishing to keep his "inner serenity" wants to avoid.

@@78a67h YOu mean the bad people they encounter on the job? Well you have to have a certain personality and thick skin to do it. But if you worked at McDonald's and took insults from customers it is similar only you can actually escort people out.
@78a67h2 жыл бұрын
@@MaharlikaAWA Working at McDonald's is a completely different kettle of fish to working the door of a (usually) rough joint. Where I briefly worked we had to do a body-search at the door to allow entry. I cannot even describe the variety of sharp implements we would find on a vast number of customers. Still I then knew of some martial arts practitioners who enjoyed the job, as it gave them the opportunity to test their skills against obnoxious customers.

As a traditional kung fu student I completely relate to everything this man is saying, so your personal story about your former school is really wierd to me. What you guys said about not getting into conflict yet trying to quell it down with some calm rational words - that's the essence and definition of kung fu for me
