For $700 its a no lose project ... get like 4 vids out of it, spend a few hundred and sell it for 3 er 4k once the smokin is fixed. Also great op to show people many small probs to look for, aka wrong washers ... takin time to look at schematics of engine systems is golden lesson ...

If you take the top end apart I'll bet you find that the rings are not staggered properly or in upside-down. Anyway, great job on the repairs you did. Thanks again for your time today and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Yup that's happened to me on an old Briggs on a 70s garden tractor. I never knew some rings were directional - and neither did they guy who was in there before me apparently 😂. Good reason to read the manuals.

Ok for the smoke. Check the spark plug, does it have oil residue on it? Pull the exhaust and look into the head, you can look up the exhaust ports and see the stems of the valves. If the exhaust valve seals are bad you will see the oil seeping down. It’s not real easy to look at the intake valve seals and oil leaking because the fuel coming from the carb washes the oil off. If the spark plug looks oil fowled. It’s ether intake valve seals or oil scraper rings. If the spark plug looks good it’s exhaust valve seals. I’d say it’s not the piston rings. Because you have such high compression, I’d bet more on valve seals.

Dang, there is an auto parts store in the area that had to re-order several cases of RTV sealer! There is a shit-ton of RTV on that right hand stator/gear case alone! Might be time to do a proper reseal job on all that stuff, and, yes, the rings never seated correctly in the cylinders, thus the heavy blue smoke. I've seen plenty of 2-strokes that smoked less! Maybe another video on a re-ring/top end job? You will get all the other issues addressed in short order, Joe! Great deal, great video series! Thanks man!

Joe -- This Old Guy Loves All your videos. I have a 77 RM Suzuki to replace the piston which lost one of the tiny pins that holds the rings from turning. Back together engine would start & run gets warm then quits. Never saw that happen before, took me a while to figure out. LOL Here's a tip for All your Readers.... Plastic Oil bottles are designed with the spout at the far end to be poured with the spout Upside not down. This Prevents the Glug Glugging after starting to pour with the majority of the oil at the bottom half of the bottle & allows air to get into the bottle more quickly to prevent a mess. In some cases if the cap hole dia. is large enough like in autos you don't even need a funnel. Prevents a Big Mess. Try It -- You might like It

First rule of thumb is if your going to rebuild an engine , get a repair manual and it will show and tell all you need to know . I just rebuilt a 02 700 twin and it all went smooth . Did watch a lot of videos to get the you tube mechanics take on things . I learned a lot and used some valuable info only experienced mechanics would know . Like the channel, keep up the good work 👍 And I’m sure when the first guy built it he didn’t prime the oil pump which is required 1st start up

A talented mechanic owns a torque wrench, doesn't grease paper oil gaskets, applies RTV to case splits, lubricates ceramic water seals, etc. This guy is a backyard mechanic, a decent one, but he's making a lot of little mistakes that will bite him eventually.

And I have worked on race and trail sleds, and ATVs for 30 years, and have always greased 1 side of my oil gaskets, A. cuz it helps it stick, and B. I believe it helps seal micro pores. Never once had a problem. I am pretty sure he has done this stuff a time or 2. Idk, there's something about trolls who talk shit, that sounds like jealousy that gets under my skin.

Wow you said the guy rebuilt the upper end but why is it smoking so much I bought a TRX 400 for 1,500 bucks and the guy said it had an accident and it back of a truck so all the rips in the plastic I sewed them with upholstery thread and glued all the nuts with super glue but it runs great but eventually the rubber thing on the pitcock crumbled I had to buy the whole thing that was almost a hundred bucks and all I needed was the rubber round ring with four holes it's a special rubber piece that goes in the pitcock and it runs perfect and no smoke at all and this is a race quad I don't think it was ever abused I bought it from some guy that had Corvettes in the driveway and he had plenty of money so I think I got a pretty good deal I love working on these things it's actually a lot of fun thanks for the video and the knowledge God bless

Back in the very early 80's when I was building and hotrodding old Mopars a guy in the neighborhood I grew in rebuilt a 350 and put in in a 68 Camaro and it smoked like a train, it was terrible. I asked him if he staggered the ring gaps and he said "no, I lined up the gaps like they are supposed to be." So you never know what you might get with someone else's work. Fun project and still worth the $700.
