I just love your approach to your channel. I’m guessing you made it your full time job, and because of that, you’re able to pump out a lot of content. The old saying that if you love your job, you don’t work a day in your life, is certainly true with you.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. This has to be his full-time job based on the amount of content he pushes out. Not only does he have to edit but he has research common issues with the vehicle, find parts, and the amount of times he spends actually working on what he buys - there is no way he can handle a full-time job. Good for him though, he has a great minimal stressful job with no boss.

When checking a thermostat you place it in the water then turn on the heat and the moment it starts to open look at the water temp with either a thermometer or heat gun. That way you will know the exact temp it opens, usually 180-195 . If it only opens at boiling temp it's game over. The seats are so bad because I and other farmers are in and out of them at a much higher rate than recreational drivers. Also we most always have something in our back pockets that tear up the seats, 13k on a farmers utv will have many more hours on the engine to get to 13k than a recreational rider. Ours sit idling much more as we go about our work . Keep up the vids, I enjoy watching.😊

Another great video. I'm finally starting to learn a little bit at 53yo thanks to Joe. I'm actually understanding the tear downs and when you wobbled that piston i was like "Oh. Not at all, worked at a Porsche dealership, techs were okay but the master mechanic would demand a clean engine (power washed). Think former watch/clock repairman, more an engineer than a mechanic, every part, every nut, and bolt scrubbed and put in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Valves and check the fuel PSI. There is a rubber spacer under the fuel pump and when it deteriorates the pump gets loose in the pump housing and causes some fuel spray out before making it to the outlet hose.

I would suggest that overheating would have scoured your cylinder & bore first before damaging the con rod bearing - which is lubricated (and cooled) by the oil. So it may indicate that it either ran with low oil or the pump failed or an OEM part failure from abuse. The valve seats may need work if there was blow by due to insufficient clearance / sealing. Enjoy these investigative videos on such a variety of vehicles - very informative. Thanks man. PS: hope you've got covers on your boats.
@kamn1
@kamn1 Жыл бұрын
Agree, nothing points to cooling system error. Cylinder and head are first that go when overheated, oil still lubricates to a degree even if its cooking in there but sure, it doesnt hurt to check I guess. Hard to say what happened here because the top end and gasket look good, I'll just guess they ran it out of oil and rod bearing took the hit before anything else. Though, how was it even running with those valves in the first place? Means they drove it with a loud bearing until it didnt fire up anymore due low compression🤡

iv worked at polaris dealership for 8 years and iv seen a this alot of these with rod bearing issues most common reason if from ppl not changing the oil or just running them low/out of oil. on the note of the intake valves being tight is usually from dirt ingestion from not cleaning air filter or not installing the lid right, also noticed the play in the primary clutch and would recommend buttons and checking the shift weight and rollers they are a common wear item

That is a good score. I think those engines have oil issues. Not sure about that model, but look into something call the "bearing" mod for the oil system. Also, those oil pickups can look clean, but if you use brake cleaner and back flush them, LOTS of crap can come out of them. If you don't do that, you will be in the same place soon.

Love the troubleshooting process. It looks like the former owners of that machine didn't go very far out of their way to do much in maintaining it. Engine replaced; new engine with a bad rod bearing...abused, used outside of its parameters, low coolant (?), strained the engine?

the fan breaker can be tested quickly by hooking positive voltage to the 12volt input and then using your volt meter to see if there is 12 volts on the output side. If there is voltage then short the output side to ground and it should cut off then voltage leave your volt meter connected to se then un-short the output side and voltage should return. Yes it's that simple! a breaker is just a re-settable fuse.

Joe, check all of the valves and cylinder head parts carefully. Mostly valves, seats and springs and head warpage. Having bucket shim valves going tight after the engine was running is not a logical failure mode. Wider maybe. But tighter? This indicates a possible valve geometry issue. If someone installed the wrong buckets during some sort of mindless troubleshooting of course. But that’s not logical either. Not with all of the other issues this engine appears to have.

Polaris YUK! When they run they can be really good fun. The bottom end on them likes to let go. I have a 900 xp EFI that has been rebuilt Twice and it only has 368 miles on the Odometer. 1st time it spit out the bearings in the bottom end and the 2nd time it dropped 3 valve guides and bent 2 valves. The 570 is basically a RZR 900/1000 with 1/2 the cylinders. The oil pump isn't the problem. They have a chain driven high pressure oil pump with Boost pump in them that very very rarely fails. They are a just a poorly designed engine that tends to suffer from Oil starvation issues due to a poorly designed Crank and block. The Oil galleys in the Stock cranks and block are a bit to small and restricted. Stay away from the OEM Polaris and the Rev6 "kits". HotRods makes a really good bottom end kit for those.

Great video and I'm sure you're going to find an oil pump problem. One thing that annoys me is the amount of gas you're wasting when checking the thermostat. If you can see the flames around the saucepan like that you need to turn it down so the flames are on the bottom of the pan. I learnt this in a professional kitchen. It all adds to your profit on the job.

Another cool find. I'm impressed you were able to slightly modify those valve buckets and get it to start. I just did my first valve job on a motorcycle with shim pucks. (A 2007 Triumph Bonneville.) Having to take the cams off, measure the shims then wait for new ones was a pain. Having to order new buckets seems more expensive. I screwed up the first time I ordered new shims... I thought I needed .25 smaller when I actually need .025 smaller. I put them in place and everything was WAY off. Had to order the correct shims and wait another 2 weeks to get them.. It was a learning experience. Sometimes you pay for your education.

It seems to me that the previous owners may have had it in for service with that high of mileage. Dealer may have done a rebuild but did not put assembly lube on the crank shaft or rod bearings. Customer gets it back after the service and it runs fine for a little bit then no longer starts. At least that is what the perfect cylinder and head with working water pump say to me.

Does this engine have an oil filter, if so a quick check for internal engine or bearing damage can be determined by cutting open the filter, squish the filter media in a vise wrapped with paper towel to then reveal any metal particles that will direct you to the most probable root cause of engine knock before even opening up the engine.
