Whoever ends up getting your GX is going to be very lucky. You definitely took better care of yours than I have so far lol. I definitely need to lube the driveshaft on mine. I appreciate all of your videos. You were such an influence in our 2013 gx we bought for our growing family. Slapped on some Hankook AT2s (?) and brought it on some trails with a lifted jeep, only thing that it didn't excel in was ground clearance, which I was expecting. It can tow, it can go off-road, and when you need to, it can put the power down to get ya going. Honestly one of the best vehicles I've purchased, and it was bought with 137k miles. Unreal. You will miss the V8 power during road trips. The 06 4Runner probably only gets about 1mpg better fuel economy.

The v8s were only available in the previous gen 4 runner, and are thus the older UZ engines instead of the UR in the 2012 GX. So, prob noticeably worse mpg, I'd expect? It is lighter though I think, maybe it cancels out.

I freaking love ours, it is comfortable, you can see and feel the quality, and knowing that it can take you anywhere is a big plus. The only downside is the old infotainment system, I guess I could always trade mine for a 22 in a few years or just get an upgrade to have apple play,

You will miss the V8! I went from 4runner (TRD Pro) to GX (2020). The engine alone is worth the added cost of a GX. The 4Runner has awful power for passing and feels strained at highway speeds.

What year 4runner? The V8 4.7L 4runner is very quick. The V6 I haven't driven but the V8 surprised me. That Gen 4 4runner with the 4.7L V8 is much lighter than the GX460 almost 1,000lbs it will feel quicker than the GX. I agree the newer 4runners are absolute trash though. Literally DANGEROUSLY slow. You cannot safely merge onto a busy highway and passing a slow car on a 2 lane road is basically out of the question it'll take you an hour to pass them.

Too bad it has to go. Our 2005 GX470 is my all-time favorite road trip vehicle. We bought it new and it now has 175K on it. It's lived it's life in Michigan, so undercarriage rust is starting to be a problem, but we'll drive it as long as we can.

In the rust belt states how many years does it take for owners to start seeing rust under their cars? Just curious because 15 years seems like a good amount of time. I’m assuming you did preventative measures from the beginning?

@@dmay949 I didn't have any rustproofing or additional undercoating on the GX. I had a bad experience with that on a Jeep many years ago, but I do wash it regularly with undercarriage flush. But hey, it's my Michigan winter car. My 2000 GS300 is higher mileage and has lived it's entire life in Michigan, but has much less rust. However, I always drive the GX on bad days, not the GS, so the GX gets more salt exposure.

@@dmay949 it was an early CJ7 and I had it undercoated by a respected national chain. Unfortunately, it seemed to rust from the inside out, rather than outside in. It was a hardtop and I never removed the top, never left it out in the rain, always kept it in the garage, but within 6 years it was rusting everywhere. The possibility of water and salt (Michigan roads) getting through cracks in the coating and becoming trapped seems like a real possibility. After 16 years, there's no body rust on my GX, though there are a number of frame points where the bolts are rusted solid. Maybe rustproofing all bolts and the frame would have been okay.

Make sure you do the "brake upgrade" on the 4Runner out the gate. They have know issues for front caliper. I think you can go 5th gen on it. Or go for it and do the Wilwood pkge. And check THOROUGHLY for rust on the 4Runner.

The 2012 GX460 premium I bought in 2019 with 140K miles from my buddy for $18k has now rolled past 200k and it is ROCK solid. So I hit a deer head on at 70+MPH in Oct and I was still able to drive it home. Insurance covered $8k worth of damage. Front driver side bumper took the brunt of damage but is damn solid and airbags did not deploy and after a slight thud and running deer over on driver side wheels it still got me home and was able to still drive it to the autobody shop an hour away. Absolutely agree with everything you said about it. This and my 97 4Runner I'm keeping. I traded in my wife's 2013 Highlander Hybrid Limited awd for a 2021 HH Platinum awd and she prefers driving my GX460 and it'll be tough getting it back for daily use. Whoever gets your GX460 will surely be a happy camper

Glad you upgraded to a 4runner. The gx prado and 4runner all share 95% same parts and platform. People think the gx and prado are the only 2 to share the same platform but the 4runner is also the same. Cooler, lighter, rear hatch, spartan interior, v6 with chain. Congrats.
