Thank you. I’m just turning 80 and walking steadily has suddenly become an issue…a worrying issue. These exercises have helped me walk better and with a bit more confidence. Thank you.

Thank you for this very helpful video. I have just started doing what you suggest, it is a case of one day at a time. I notice that when walking backwards that it makes me stand more upright and not bent over. That is a very good thing, imo!

In the introduction you talked about the mechanics of walking, even blaming falls on the mechanics. Have watched many people walking and some have given me time to check out their mobility. It seems that many people have very limited mobility which impedes a decent walk. Tight tendons, loose ligaments, old muscle injuries all cause poor mobility. I have also noted that most older people have functionally fused sacrums. This transfers the work of the sacrum to the hips which were not designed for that job. Stress and anxiety also cause muscle tightness. Another major cause of falls, in my opinion, is that people cannot focus on walking. That is to say, that while walking they are thinking about hundreds of things that are needed to be done or that have already happened. That is not living in the moment and is also a huge distraction from the actual job at hand, walking. Walking is quite a complex maneuver. When I walk I only focus on my walking and also the environment that can affect my advancement. I also like to enjoy the sensory information that comes in from the surroundings. If I feel an urge to think about something or use a celular phone, I stop and attend to that job. Therefore I would say that the 3 main causes of falls are; 1) poor mobility, 2) inability to focus, 3) fear .

The doctor told my Dsd he has tight leg muscles due to sitting too long. He needs to move.

@@skh5580 of course he needs to move but if you limited mobility your movements will be restricted and probably uncomfortable. I would suggest starting out with some foot and leg strengthening exercises that will also help with mobility. At the same time at least 1 hour a day of stretching, preferably laying down and sitting. Walking incorporates the whole body but if the person has limited mobility their walking will be difficult and will not help them to become more mobile. Add the fear of falling to this and the obvious chance of falling you may be taking on too much too soon. There is an excellent site, “ GMB “ he has good strengthening exercises, he demonstrates them well and with an incrementing process. He also clearly explains any potential dangers or issues. I highly recommend working at sitting in “ Seiza “. It is difficult but it has many benefits, one is gets you out after a chair and while sitting you are actually improving your posture. I have studied stretching and posture, for my own health and vitality, for 15 years and within the last year I discovered Seiza and it is a blessing. I still use a chair, straight backed, in the kitchen but on the porch or in my bedroom I use a Zabuton cushion and sit in Seiza or stretching out my pelvis/sacrum/lumbar.
