Yeah and I forgot to really hit home on that. I talked about the price of the 9500 but should have discussed more the need for an amp with the 600 vs. the very low cost of the 9500 without an amp being mandatory. I use mine with a hip-dac though, which really helps to tame down the high mid/low treble area quite nicely without EQ.

@@HomeStudioBasics Yeah, that's pretty much how the relationship is shaping up, lol ;) The 6XX's are just so much easier on my ears over long sessions. Yeah man my pleasure! I actually removed mine the other day because in addition to the paint mod, I also want to put a different set of pads on them. It's a bit tricky to do though because the padding is glued really well on there. You'll feel like you're going to break them when you take off the pads but they snap right out and go back in rather easily.

Thanks for your review and I enjoyed watching it very much. I am also considering the Fidelio X1s or the X2HR, as both of them come down in price significantly. Currently the X1s is only 25% more cost than 9500, while the X2HR is about double. I wonder if you have listened to X1 or X2 before and how you compare them to 9500. Since even the X1s is only US$20 higher than 9500, and X2 is around $50more than 9500, hence I would go for whichever that is more balance and the most important most comfortable. I wonder if you can give me any advice on this.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man thank you! X2 is going to be mid-bassier than the 9500. 9500 rolls off quite considerably. It's a pretty open and neutral headphone with some minor issues in the high mids/low treble area. It can get somewhat bitey/essy at times. The 9500 would be more for mixing/mastering, while the X2 for fun. I like the 9500 for casual listening though. The lean bass response definitely isn't for everyone, but it's a super revealing headphone for sure and a joy to listen with. For balance, def the 9500 man! Where are you located?
@nixxhimself
@nixxhimself 4 жыл бұрын
Having had both and listened to both quite a bit and on a lot of different devices/sources I’d say the 600s sound better to me however the 9500s are an excellent headphone in their own right. If you just want a good headphone that sounds awesome for most uses and you don’t have a tone of money get the 9500s. If you have a bigger budget and plan to keep them long term get the 600s. Both are comfortable but the 600s let you replace parts as you go. The 9500s you can change the cable easily and the pads though it’s a pain in the ass. Both sound good but to me, the 600s sound better. If you can try both, buy the one that sounds better to you and ignore the “audiophiles” who claim they can hear a difference between a $20 cable and a $500 one.

I was mostly into closed back full size headphones. A while back I picked up a 9500 just to try out an open backed and since the 9500 was well regarded and relatively inexpensive it seemed worth a try. It turns out I like the open sound a lot more than I thought I would. This brings me to my question. Is there something better, in the $150-$200 range, that has the same type of open sound AND is worth the expense of buying it even though I already have the 9500? I'm looking for something that would make me feel like "Yeah this is like a 9500 taken to the next level" more than something like "This is like a 9500 except better". Or would I need to spend more to get to that next level?
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man! Good to hear from you again.. Hmm.. Something similar to the 9500 in that range is probably like an AKG K550/553. I know it's closed, but it's very similar. Open sounding, lighter on the bass but incredibly articulate.. Great Soundstage, great for gaming, probably a bit more natural sounding and mellowed out while still being incredibly crisp and detailed, etc. Think of the K553 as a more refined and elegant version of the 9500. As if the 9500 matured or something. Another option would be something like a 4XX, though I'd caution you on that one because of the sometimes shoddy build. Did you happen to see my DEVA review? kzbin.info/www/bejne/bprKeaCmoauSprM They definitely fixed the build issues but it is a tad outside of your $150-200 range. Still worth a look see though! :) Let me know your thoughts on everything.

Hey man! I think the hip-dac pairs incredibly well with the 9500, as well as something like an Oppo HA-2 which I was using a lot in the last 1-2 years before it was discontinued. The Zen would be cool too! I think the hip specifically really helps to tame the upper mids/low treble without the need for EQ. I don't find the 9500 as bright sounding with it. @@Benjamin12 Yes yes! What did you think of the article as a whole? If you were a person brand new to headphones and dacs, and didn't know anything about it, would the article 1) Make sense in simple terms, and 2) convince you to purchase something like a 6XX in order to skyrocket your listening experience?
@Benjamin12
@Benjamin12 4 жыл бұрын
@@HomeStudioBasics I liked the article. 1) There's no strange audio lingo, everything is well written as you could experience it from your perspective. The beginning intro about the AMP/DAC is important, though a new person would skip it, maybe (?). Nothing wrong, is just that until you get it, people would go for the cans as their first interest. Good thing that right after #1 you get that info. The initial summary points for every headphones are helpful. It's good to know about music genres and artist recommendations. 2) As it said, you save the best for last. If I were in a budget I would buy the 9500 as my 'entry level' headphones, if not I would definitely go for the 6XX. When I reached the part about what you experience, "thing such as..." I kept telling to myself YES! YES! YES! That's exactly it! - In terms of budget again, if somebody told 'Hey did you know you could get this extraordinary headphones that are practically the same as one of their top flagship but for less money?" I would save and get those, like a no brainer. Though, is important to emphasize the use of the dac/amp especially for these to max. the experience. Btw, your article "HD600 vs. SHP9500", once again, really good.

0:37 Is that an actual comment made to your video or what? XD Lol. I can't say anything about the HD 600 vs SHP9500-comparison but SHP9500 was a very decent can on its own. I owned it for a while and liked it quite a bit but ended up selling it, had too much headphones (and I still have lol) and I just didn't have enough time to appreciate its sound. I had a chance to compare it to some a bit higher end open backs like ATH-R70X and HE-400i and I honestly didn't hear TOO MUCH of a difference between them as far as the overall sound quality goes, I think the sound on Philips somewhat lacked naturalness and kind of "effortlessness" compared to them but hold its own in many other ways. I'm interested to see/hear if Philips could improve them with SHP9600!

Yeah man I just got that comment on the AKG K240 vs. Samson SR850 comparison lol. I just ignored it for obvious reasons.. Anyways, yeah really looking forward to the 9600!! Marko, I think we need to talk. How many headphones do you have? xD Also I really do think the 9500 is one of the most natural sounding headphones I've ever heard. Not a huge fan of "synergy" lol (and we've talked about this), but man.. the hip-dac with it just sounds perfect. It's like all that upper mid/low treble "hotness" just goes away without the need for any EQ. Even out of a more sterile amp I still think the 9500 is fairly effortless in the way it portrays music, and I've always said this. Perhaps the HA-2 had something to do with that. Man, out of all the amp/dacs I've owned or demoed, I really miss that one the most. An amazing piece of gear.

after spending a bunch on on ear headphones with very unacceptable fake leather padding, I find the cloth padding of the 9500 a table turner. Plus I really wanted a good soundstage, so it is double the win. Three meter wire > 1.8 meter wire, triple the win. It honestly should cost like 1.5x, but I am glad it is cheap so I could grab it.

It could go either way really. Die hard HD600 fans will probably tell you it's perfect for metal, but for me, not so much. It kind of lacks the slam and zest that's needed. Hey man! Respectfully disagree. I hear things in the 9500 that I've never heard in an HD600 (or most other headphones for that matter), and I've always made that assertion. I've never flip flopped on it like others have. A recent example would be the song "So Many Tears" by Tupac. I have been listening to it since 2007 and never once heard him faintly talking on the right side in the beginning. I can't really make out what he says, but his voice was completely absent all of these years up until just a few days ago. No headphone or speaker has ever revealed that, save the 9500. It's just unreal how good they image and portray micro details at times, regardless of price. So I think in terms of clarity and detail, the 9500 definitely provides a bit more. That's not to say the 600's aren't detailed, and I don't think they are "veiled" on their own, but putting one up next to a 9500 you can definitely kind of hear that warmness and smoothness more so than if you didn't have a 9500 right there to compare. Even so, I value the 600 series a lot and still place a 6XX at the top of a list for anyone new to the hobby because it is a complete package and represents 95% of the "audiophile sound" at a fraction of what you'd pay for like a Focal, Audeze, etc. homestudiobasics.com/the-5-best-audiophile-headphones-for-under-500/ I guess I have just never understood the hate for the 9500. To me it's a great example of the elitist attitudes and behaviors that permeate the hobby. Thank you for stopping by and not attacking me over your stance!

@@Tripokaridos22 No worries man! If you don't hear it you don't hear it. :) Thank you for not attacking me like some others would do! Maybe it's me lol. I just found that whenever I go back to a 9500, it's like everything opens up and I can hear so much more going on.As if I was missing details and some intimacy or something. This is in large part why I always recommend the headphone to people. It's just astounding to me how something this cheap could achieve such a high level of sound quality. Yeah the "essiness" is there at times, but the headphone is dirt cheap. The DEVA is a $300 headphone and has some treble issues so I could never understand people's hate for the 9500. It does so much right. Other headphones have similar issues and cost more to way more. 4XX, 400i, DT880, 990, SRH440, Ananda (not a huge spike, but there's still some peakiness there) I could go on. But yeah, I love the 600 series and the 6XX as well. I actually prefer darker treble nowadays so I definitely understand where you're coming from. I could wear a 6XX for days and never be musically fatigued. That's why it's my #1 recommendation in the hobby for newer folks as well. I also mostly prefer Audeze type treble and house sound, as well as something like an Oppo PM-3 (really wish they were still making headphones). Anyways, yeah this is getting long winded LOL. I'm listening to the DEVA through the Zen right now!
