I had no idea how much MLMs have shaped American public perception and policy.

I loved everything Mr. Fitzpatrick had to say. Specially about individualism, the american dream and safety nets.

Fascinating discussion. I knew MLMs were sleazy and fraudulent, but I had no idea how truly insidious they were and still are. Thank you.

Excellent👍 Got roped into Mary Kaye Cosmetics back in early 1980s. Lost more money than I made for sure (even tho I had so called "high class" clients) merely because of initial investments in product. Only took one 9-month MLM experience to learn my lesson💪

Love listening to Robert Fitzpatrick. Such a wealth of knowledge. Agree that it is amazing how many MLM commercials there are during the anti MLM podcasts. Maybe all the pro MLM podcasts should feature anti MLM commercials.

Amazing, thorough, great timing....once you see the web of ‘cult coercion’ in one area, you can see it everywhere

Back in the day, my mother (everybody's mother) used to have Tupperware parties and then she got into Avon and just ended up with boxes of smelly Avon crap. I also have a friend who was involved with tea tree oil products - I bought a couple items that were quite good, but she kept pressing so hard that I finally had to set boundaries that we wouldn't talk about it.

Got to love those algorithms! Certainly the advertisers would be mortified if they knew where their advertising dollars were being spent and where the system is landing their ad. Ironic and kind of hilarious!

I can see how some religions are more sincere than others, but I think in all religions the sincerity comes with a major asterisk.

The reason authoritarian governments don’t like Mlm’s or Scientology its because game recognize game. Also, it’s why the Christian God said you shall not have any gods before me. The authoritarian government sees their people as theirs and will not to another authoritarian entity.

I know an actress (Freya Tingley, couple of Netflix series) who's recruiting for scientology on Instagram. She's not upfront about it; she lures people in by asking that they share their troubles with her in private messages, then she sends them scientology videos. I know because she's trying to recruit me. What should I do?

Send her links to Going Clear or Scientology and the Aftermath and tell her to stop pushing her cult on people who don't want to hear about it. That's about the best you can do on that medium.

It's actually kind of funny, the commonly used German derogatory term for junk, unimportant small things, and even irrelevant matters of children and alike, is ironically derived from the word Kram (to offer a product), and derived from Kram, is Krämer; the small merchant or traveling merchant. Both terms developed over time into negative connotations, which is likely linked to the advent of retail, during the early modern period.

The absolute horror of seeing this discussion and understanding that this mindset changing idea of "always selling" shifted the entire american culture, then went on to influence the mindset of the entire world. The vast majority of the self help industry is translated from english to local languages and sold globally. And that very self help industry is mostly based on Dale Carnegie and Napoleon Hill. The scars on the cultures and societies around the world cannot even be estimated....it's mental

Did you and him say N-gram when you were talking about woo/mysticism conferences? Enneagram? Enneagram is a Jungian-like philosophy/psychology system, a distinct type of woo more focused on self-knowledge and growth. Would love to hear you interview an Enneagram expert.
