I believe her first sorrow was at the presentation of the temple when Simeon revealed to her what the cost of our redemption would be. I currently don’t believe that she was sorrowing at the annunciation, the visitation, and at our Lords birth.
@D07770 Жыл бұрын
@PerfectNormal Yes, you are absolutely correct! The first sorrow is when Simeon reveals to Mary all the suffering that Jesus is going to endure. 💔
@kostancijadegutyte184 Жыл бұрын
If one is not a completely inocent young girl, one cannot understand that Holy Mary's sorrows started a month , or so, after the Annunciation. I will attach my own summation of what Mary might have had to endure in her soul after the splendor of the Annunciation. 'The Sorrows of Mary and Joseph': In the spring of 2023, I started contemplating about the great sorrows of Mother Mary from a different perspective. Though chosen by God to raise His Son, Mary and Joseph had to suffer all kinds of sorrows that ordinary people encounter, even more so than most of us. . Sorrow #1. When the Angel spoke to Mary, she agreed to fulfill God’s request without hesitation. But later on, she must have got frightened not knowing what was happening to her body. She couldn’t talk about it to her parents, less so to Joseph. The only living soul that she could confide her condition was Elizabeth, as she was the only human being mentioned in the Angel’s message. Mary went to Elizabeth with haste. She didn’t go to Elizabeth to help her, as the Church scholars have decided to teach as a dogma. Elizabeth was wealthy. Being the wife of a high priest, she must have had enough servants. Mary hurried to her cousin in search of self-help! Finding out if Elizabeth was really pregnant, would have made it easier for Mary to accept what was happening to her. Elizabeth’s mysterious greeting must have offered a great relief to Mary. She stayed with her until John was born. When Mary saw that Elizabeth’s child was a normal human baby, and also, witnessing Zacharias regaining his speech provided Mary with further proof that God was indeed at work in her life and she left without helping Elizabeth to care for her new baby. She was ready to approach Joseph and tell him the truth. Now, try to fathom Joseph’s shock and his torment! No wonder, God saw that he needed to intervene, and thus, sent Joseph an instructional dream. Sorrow #2. Imagine Mary and Joseph’s anguish when Jesus was about to be born, yet they had no place to stay. Jesus was rejected by the human society from the very start. By arranging Jesus’ birth in the most humbling place God showed Satan, the prince of all the riches of this world, that the Holy Family was not indebted to him for anything. However, Joseph and Mary might have felt painfully dejected and totally abandoned by God. Sorrow #3. Imagine how troubled Joseph and Mary’s minds and hearts must have been, when God instructed them to flee to Egypt. No reprieve from suffering uncertainty, inconveniences and dangers. Sorrow #4. Mary and Joseph lose Jesus and for three days they don’t know where he is. They had to go through every parent’s worst nightmare just like regular human beings. When, upon finding Jesus in the Temple, Mary asked him why he had treated them like that, Jesus retorted as if bewildered, “Didn’t you know that I had to be in my father’s house?” It could be that even Jesus was surprised that God had not sent them any messages as to where he was. Though Jesus’ answer sounds rude, it might have touched Mary’s heart with warmth as it was a rare moment when she was reminded and assured that Jesus was a divine child and that God was with him and also present in her life. Sorrow #5. When Mary met Jesus, bruised, crowned with thorns and carrying the cross, she must have been greatly distraught as a mother. In her heart, she must have been crying out to God to stop that madness. Sorrow #6. Mary, while following Jesus through the torturous journey along the streets of Jerusalem, even when he was nailed to the cross, might still have cherished some hope that Jesus himself would perform a miracle, or that God would intervene to save him. However, the moment when the centurion’s lance pierced Jesus’s side while he hung on the cross must have crushed Mary’s last hope. Her heart must have been pierced by that sword as well. Strangely, the only thing that might have eased the pain in her crushed heart could have been the words spoken by the old Simeon, at the time of Jesus’ presentation at the Temple, when he prophesied about the sward piercing Mary’s heart. Sorrow #7. When Mary held Jesus’ lifeless body, she must have felt betrayed by God and perceived her life as a total failure. She was all alone, having no place to call it her home. Even though Jesus had instructed one of the apostles to take care of Mary as if she were his own mother, Mary must have felt humiliated and hurt that all these spectacular promises by God had brought her life to naught. Why did God put Mother Mary through all this suffering? In the Revelations, it is written that the Virgin Mary will be the one who will lead the final battle against Satan. Even though in 2 Thessalonians 2:8 it says, “And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.”, the Virgin Mary’s role in leading the prayer warriors is very meaningful. Satan gained his power by seducing Eve, thus his power will have to be annihilated by a woman as well. Could it be that Mary’s power is the energy garnered through her own human prayers and suffering that she experienced in her life? The prayers and suffering of all the adopted children of God, when offered to Jesus and Mary, are given into the hands of Mother Mary as the most powerful weapon and it will become the sword in her hands that she will strike Satan with. Mary will not kill him; she will only strike his “heel”, the symbolic seat of his power, disarming and disabling him for eternity. Whereas Jesus, with the breath of his mouth, will destroy all of Satan’s works and cast him into the pit of eternal damnation.

@@kostancijadegutyte184read Mary’s explanation of her sorrows to Maria Valtorta: 'The first sorrow was not just because of my love as the Mother of God. I knew my destiny; I had embraced Pain together with Love. But how much pain to feel and already see that men would take Good and turn Good into an Evil for themselves. In the mockery directed at Simeon, I saw all the schisms, all the heresies, and all forms of athesim were thus before me. "And a sword will pierce your heart." A sword? A mass of swords! I am a mass of swords, there is not one strip of my heart that has not been pierced. They pierce my flesh and penetrate my heart." "The second sorrow was not just because of the discomforts of flight, but because of the bitterness of seeing poor human power become an assassin instead of great by being the servant of God. How many of the 'great' from then until the end of time would imitate Herod and trample on God in order to be 'gods'. I thus saw jackals, who were killing to destroy God, and together with my Son I clasped to my heart all those persecuted for the sake of the Faith and heard their holy moans mingled with the blasphemies of the overbearing, and unable to curse, I wept...... The road from Bethlehem to Egypt was marked by my tears." "I thus sought Jesus, Who was lost, not because of my failing or that of my husband. My Child had wanted to do this to make an initial appeal to hearts and give them the Good News. But among millions of beings who would exist, how many would lose God by their own fault or his own free will! My third sorrow was to see that many would have to drink of the bitter chalice to continue the work of redemption with God for sinners, and even more bitter was to see the great number who would perish in desperation. If only men were always able to seek Jesus!" Death of Saint Joseph "I exhort all wives who are tortured by pain, to imitate Mary in her widowhood: to be united to Jesus. Those who think that Mary's heart did not suffer any afflictions are mistaken. She suffered in a holy way, but she suffered bitterly. Those who think that Mary did not love Joseph deeply only because he was the spouse of her soul and not of her flesh, are also mistaken. Mary did love Joseph deeply; he was her father, spouse, brother, friend, protector." Jesus leaving her “Mary had one good thing, and one love on the earth: her Son. The only thing left to her. Only I was left to love her and make her feel she was not alone. She cried. And which mother would not have cried becuase of the seperation from a son who loved her as I loved Mine. She cried because she was the Co-Redeemer, and she also started her journey which will take her to Golgotha.” “I was a Mother, and to see my Child under the Cross was a natural sorrow. But a greater supernatural sorrow was to see the hatred, much more anguishing than the wood, oppressing my Son. How much hatred! From that mob screaming blasphemies and mockery there would come all those hating the holy Martyr. If I had been able to take the Cross away from Jesus and set it on my shoulders as a Mother, I would have suffered less than seeing all the future crucifiers of their Savior with the eyes of my spirit." "The fifth sword was from the knowledge that His Blood, dripping like many rivulets of salvation from His lacerated members, would always be blasphemed. So many lost! So many of who the Passion and Death of my Son would be useless! And am I, the Mother, not to suffer on seeing that so many of my children have deserved to be cursed and cut off forever from the spiritual family of Heaven, in which I am the Mother and my Jesus is the Firstborn and the first Brother?" (I once heard in a homily that if no one was on Calvary to crucify Jesus, Mary herself would’ve done it because it was necessary) "I received the lifeless body of my God and Son and I could have counted His wounds one by one. Certainly, I did not know the pain of childbirth. But I knew this one and there is no pain of childbirth that can be compared. All my pain as a believer, all my pain as a mother have become one. I wasn’t on the Cross physically with my Son, but my soul was there, my bowels and heart being lacerated with all the pains of childbirth from every woman in mankind from the first day until the last. It was only by God’s Will that I did not die that day with my Son." "I did not see Jesus dead in your hearts. But your hearts dead to Him. I saw in how many hearts He would be laid out as if on cold remains. The countless Judases who are unable to become worthy of recieving their wounded God by an honest conversion and who would be healed by their repentence. They are desecrated temples, profaned by the rottenness of all vices, in whom only the name of Christ remains as the body of my Jesus remained in the tomb. They, too, are lifeless. And if in Gethsemane the knowledge of all those for whom the Sacrifice would be useless was the spiritual martyrdom of my Son, on kissing Jesus in the last farewell, this vision was my agony."

With respect, I disagree with the opening statements. I believe that the song ‘Mary did you know’ is rhetorical and has probably brought more people to Christianity than any modern song, because it demonstrates the ENORMITY of what Our Lady gave to the world by saying 'Yes' to the Angel Gabriel. The songwriter clearly knew enough about the Bible to know the basic facts - like Jesus walked on water - but also to have a spiritual empathy with Our Blessed Lady’s feelings… ‘when you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God’. He would also have known Our Lady’s response to the Angel Gabriel, “I am the servant* of the Lord; let it be done unto me according to your word” which is the ultimate statement of selflessness and sacrifice of a lady who already knew that she could be stoned to death for accepting God’s will. So, in my opinion, the moments of joy - and sorrows - started from the Annunciation - and clearly the author knew that Mary DID know! So, why use rhetorical questions? Well, if you order a child with muddy feet to ‘Take off your boots!’ or you say, ‘What do you think will happen to the carpet if you walk in like that?’… which comment will the child think about and learn from? I believe people learn more from asking questions than just being given the answers. So, imagine the song without the questions… “Mary, you knew your son would walk on water” etc. That’s simply a statement with no call to action. By saying, “Mary did you know…”, the writer calls for the listener to ask the question. Those listeners include believers - and non-believers who don’t necessarily want to be told the facts, but who can be brought to the faith simply by asking the right questions. So, PLEASE, don't ban the song... play it whenever possible and introduce more people to Jesus and His Blessed Mother and their unfathomable depths of the love! (* different translations use the words ‘servant’ or ‘handmaid’)

@wrassmussen Жыл бұрын
He is saying that in order to obtain what was promised by Our Lady of Sorrows, one need only to say a Hail Mary prayer while meditating on each of her seven sorrows - for a total of seven Hail May prayers. Reciting the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows or the Chaplet of Our Lady of Sorrows can be done as an act of love for Our Lady of Sorrows, however, this is not necessary to obtain the seven promises of Our Lady of Sorrows.
