Hello Ryan, I prefer to watch the content of the smaller channels too and of course support to each other is my main focus. Tomatoes ripen better on the vine and I cut the green ones off. I tryed neem oil on the caterpillars which worked, but probably not then suitable for selling, okay for showing. You are so inspirational and it inspires me to do better. The poor soil you spoke of will make a good base layer for next year. Gardening on a budget. 🐛Happy Gardening........🌻Terry King 🥕

Your market garden looks amazing with fresh healthy plants. You really have done a great job. You're good at weeding too👍 I slightly disagree that tomatoes do not get better taste by ripening on the plant. Where I live we get tomatoes from abroad in the winter. They are picked green and ripen during transport to the store. They look great and ripe, but don't taste tomatoes ☹️. I like your enthusiasm and plans for next year based on the mistakes you have experienced. I love this tour, Ryan. Thank you for sharing. All the best and take care.

Lovely farm tour my friend! It's looking great, like a green ocean of food 😁 I love that look! But you're probably right about customers being interested into some degree of colour variation. Yup the cabbage moth plague got me too this year. I'm done with that and a mesh tunnel is on my to-do-list for spring. You know the paradoxon of shitty compost? It does not have shit in it 🤣 that's what's wrong with it! Please don't tempt mother nature to bring snow 🙈 eeek! 'pepper pepper, touch wood, throwing a fermented cucumber over my left shoulder' ok now we are all safe.

A bit long winded, but hey...that's me!! I love how it looks as well, but need more colour for the market table!! Bad year for those white buggers, hope you got some harvest. Have a great week min vån💛🇸🇪
@torptomaten39815 жыл бұрын
I heard about the bacteria spray, but the only one I could find is not sold to private customers and costs more than netting from a garden center in Sweden. Ouch! And I would forget to spray the plants in time lol for sure. My cheapskate idea to build a net tunnel is to buy some old ugly lace curtains. They cost next to nothing in second hand stores or on flea markets. Even the bulk IKEA version is not awfully expensive. It's basicly the same stuff. They are reasonably UV stable, can be washed if needed before winter storage and they also add appropriate crazy flair to the garden hahaha works for me ;)

Out at the U of A farm, we mulch our garlic with dry leaves and then put all our corn stalks and the stems from our french and runner beans on top to weigh the leaves down. It's a wonderful mulch to stop winter kill and is already half composted when it comes off the beds in the spring. It saves us soooo much space in our compost systems as well. I imagine it would work just as well to protect your lemon balm. With your beets, hill them up much like potatoes though not quite as much of a hill. We have the same problem with voles eating our larger beets, though if they can't actually see the top of the beets they seem to leave them alone. We have such a horrific vole problem this year that they are nesting in the potato plants and still having babies even at this time of year.

You may not have noticed because you're in the middle of it but you've learned quite a bit and one season. This winter when you look back you will think to yourself "wow I accomplished a lot". What I’ve noticed is that when the birds, the little brown ones, discover that there is an easy source of caterpillars they flock to them and are the best at deworming plants. What I’ve also done is remove bottom leaves and then wash down my plants with a safe soap based spray.

I have no idea about how your 'dollars and cents' are adding up, but you have a great looking garden. Charles Dowding's channel has great advice about dealing with organic ways of dealing with caterpillars ( I think you might like it, it gives them 'indigestion' which is a polite English way of saying it 'k*lls the little b*st*rds' ;-) ) My instinct for the 'sale trade' is fresh herbs in the winter. In the Nordics I have just planted parsley, Coriander (cilantro ?), and winter lettuce (just for the family). But there are a bunch more that tolerate snow and frost. Re: crap compost, I have had exactly the same experience this year, and it is entirely because the compost was created at too high a temperature, in this case what we (you and I ) need to do is mix it with existing top soil or 'slow compost' to reintroduce bugs, microbes etc. Cheap compost is still valuable, it just needs some 'love' putting back into it. Love your vlog, impressed by your ability, and sure of your success.
@Mrsnufleupagus5 жыл бұрын
Dollars and cents....er not so much. I am happy with what I have learned from this year, and will certainly look to make more money next year! Lol, I will be using that bacteria next year!! I hope to fill a small niche for fresh herbs in the cooler months! I will be amending that compost before the fall is thru. Thank you kindly my friend, I appreciate the encouragement :))
@McDowallManor5 жыл бұрын
The patch is looking great for the most part. I reckon you have to expect a bit of damage. The critters are gonna get something. I'm lucky - I don't get frosts. I'm also piling mulch on at the moment - it keeps the soil cool for me, traps water and breaks down to feed the plants. What's not to love about that?! I have to early harvest all my tomatoes. The critters slaughter them otherwise. I like us youtubers that show their fails. It's best way to learn by a long stretch.
@Mrsnufleupagus5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely Andy, and as my first year to market, it was a bit of observation to see what pest challenges I would have. I'll put more effort into discouragement next year, lol. Mulch rocks in every climate, and that is a fact!! Show fails?? If I didn't, I'd have about 6 vids out by now:)))

Ryan so you think that you are broke? I was once so broke that when I walked past the bank the alarm went off.. .... I stole that one from Les Brown. I use reemay frost covers or insect netting over all of my brassicas and anything the cabbage bastard moth will attack. I do it on the day I sow or transplant. The cool thing about it is that once it starts getting hot the cover acts as a slight shade cloth. once they are big enough a couple cabbage moth bastards really don't hurt the plants. I got my covers from dubois agrinovation up there in beautiful Canada. I use row bags to hold down the tarps and cloths. Also from dubois. The beans were a great crop to grow in the s*** compost. Hopefully you get a little nitrogen fixing going on. Maybe try a cover crop for over the winter.
