Desperate Housewives is one of the rare shows I’ve watched where the quality remains consistent throughout. Generally speaking S3-S6 are the show’s peak, but the quality remains pretty consistent across all seasons. It’s a campy and messy show for sure, but hella entertaining.

Bree/Spencer: fan favorite liar/housewive, kinda of the leader of the clan: organized, bad luck with men, smart, loyal, got some addictions but are always relevant for the plot, (their friends even turned against them at some points and both got an intervention). Hanna/Gaby: 2nd fan favorite: funny, impulsive, sassy, stylish, kinda vain and superficial but have a heart of gold. ( terrible actions in s1 that got brushed aside: John's affair and Hanna forcing herself to Sean). Lynette/Emily: driven, very strong work ethic but controlled by a toxic partner (Tom, Alison and Paige), something are annoying and VERY STUBBORN. Susan/Aria: the WORST. supposed to be the main character but are annoying, big liars, selfish, self-centred, bad friend and girlfriend, got no purpose outside their man (Ezra and Mike) but are kinda artsy and passionate Alison/Eddie: Unapologetic mean HBIC, maneater, did terrible actions, got sent away due to their bad actions but came back a lot nicer.

I had a love hate relationship towards orson. That time he killed Eddie which was on of my favourite characters pissed me off. Even tho he didn’t confess to it he still did redeem himself a bit after. Susan Hatcher broke the internet in 1995 for a picture of her draped in a Superman cape. So I think because of that the writers play into the idea that she’s some epitome of beauty, and that’s why she’s treated that way.

It’s funny nobody talks about DH was an inspiration for Pretty Little Liars. Alloy hired Sara Shepherd to make a teen Desperate Housewives novel series. You can really see it with Spencer and Hannah and Bree and Gabriella. I also think it’s funny that the character in DH that is hated the most is PLL’s comparison to Aria (who isn’t hated per say, but does have the hated relationship).

I love reminiscing about this hella good show I must've binged like three times. Bree was always THE moment for me, lol. Grew to love Gaby too, as the show progressed. Ironically those two are the ones viewers were the least on board with at the beginning because of how one was selfish and materialistic, and the other was just uptight beyond reason. Both grew so much while staying true to who they are over the course of the show. But honestly, early seasons Bree was always my guilty pleasure, lol.

Yeah, this show did not age well at all. Beware spoilers. To warn you, Susan does get really annoying as the show goes on. Rewatching it, I feel bad for Dana Delaney’s character because I only viewed her as the girl obsessed with Mike, but upon a rewatch, she is not a bad person. Made some mistakes, but not the worst either. I do love Gabby and Carlos’s relationship as the show progresses. They do love each other and support each other even though they experienced many ups and downs to get there. I think Bree has the best character arc on the show and I love how they showed (Spoilers) her parallels to Mary Alice, at least when it comes to reputation and how far down a secret may take you. While many things were not depicted well, I think they did a good job portraying her alcoholism and depression. They also did a good job with how she rekindled her relationship with her son and she became very accepting of him. It brings me to Vanessa William’s character. I love her character and her friendship with Bree. It made perfect sense that she saved Bree in her time of need versus the other three friends she had. They gradually grew apart from her especially since Bree kind of pushed them away. While I do agree that Tom made mistakes with Lynette, I do not enjoy how she treated him half of the time. He did mature and he tried very hard to be what Lynette wanted and she just treated him like crap. Many of his insecurities came from her insults at him. He could do nothing right by her. The divorce made sense. I get them coming back together because she finally appreciated him in the end, but I am surprised they did not get divorced earlier. They weren’t fully, just separated, but I felt Lynette was more mean to Tom than he was to her. Not justifying either of their actions towards each other at times, but that is what I saw. They did not portray mental health well either which you see with the Applewhites.

Yeah Tom is so put down and he is too nice to fight against the behaviour he gets from Lynette as he loves her and accepts it. I love them both, Tom is my fav from the male cast, he broke my heart with the cheating. But watching how Lynette punches Tom is a nice reminder for me not to become like her as i relate to her in some points as being very harsh and dominant.

uh I disagree on Tom- he was always acted like a baby and cried when he didn’t get what he wanted. he wanted his other daughter to live near their kids, lynette agreed, he wanted to quit his job, open a pizza shop, quit that, go to college, go back to work, quit work, work with lynette. she agreed. chronic dissatisfaction. the truth is that he never really matured and always got what he wanted but the show made a point to write him as a good guy and lynette as the bad one. when in reality she always compromised her values to please him. can you believe how she agreed to give birth multiple times even tho she didn’t want to. it’s her body and even that was something she look past just to make him happy. people never talk about what good a wife she was, she did everything for him and at the end of the day all he could do was cry like a baby cuz he felt emasculated when in reality he was just an insecure man child who couldn’t handle the fact that his wife was smarter and talented and stronger than he’d ever be. he reminds me of Rex from Bree’s marriage. no matter how many sacrifices Lynette and Bree would do for their husbands they were tossed aside

@@insertsomethingcreativeher7949 i agree with that too. Just to be clear, I am not trying to make Lynette the bad guy. Both of them made mistakes that affected their marriage. I just hated how she ragged on him and belittled tom a lot which I think added to his insecurities. I do think he wanted to be on Lynette’s level and it took him a while trying to find his footing and a job that could do that. Now thinking about it, I think both felt under appreciated by the other.

Omg to be in a position where I’ve never seen Desperate Housewives before… my favourite episodes were Season 3 - Bang, Season 4 - Somethings Coming, Season 5 - A Spark To Pierce the Dark, and of course the whole storyline at the end of Season 7/ Season 8. I would honestly watch commentary on JUST those episodes!

@@ilvermorny7352 I agree he acted incompetent at many points. He still had quite a successfull career, becoming a marketing director. At the same time, he seemed to me to be the one to start an open dialogue when their relashionship became strained. He supported Lynette when she had cancer and when she told him about her involvment in a murder, forgave her for sabotaging his career and for almost cheating, gave up his daughter because she hated Lynette (there were other reasons too, but I think that was the major one). Does incompetence in professional life really make people villains?

Teri Hatcher was arguably the lead when the show first came out as she was by far the most famous in 04. Unfortunately I think this leads Susan to have the most stagnation as far as storylines go because Teri doesn’t really do all that well outside of a specific quirky girl-next-door type character. Thus Susan as a character never really branches out and she becomes a little one-note as the series progresses. IMO, of course.

I have been waiting for someone to make a video about this! DH is one of my top 3 favorite shows ever, and I love almost every season, except season 2 (and that one still has its moments, like Bree waking up in a closed mall after passing out in a dressing room. So heartbreaking.) I love how all the ladies are so flawed, manipulative, and backstabbing (even with each other, and definitely with their families *cough, cough* Lynette,) but also so loving and mostly well-intentioned. I'd love to have a video, or videoS *wink* about the rest of the show.

You are in for such a treat!! I watched DH every week with my dad and I’ve rewatched it many times. I feel like it was a huge influence on PLL but it does the mysteries SO much better and like you said, things actually tie together and make sense. It’s also hilarious. I don’t hate Susan as much as most people do but I can see how she annoys people with her clumsiness and helplessness. I never really hated any of the core four. I absolutely LOVE Edie but my favourite is Bree. Her storylines are the best and she goes through such amazing character development. They also tended to do a lot of ‘diasaster’ episodes like Greys and they are some of the best episodes of the series. Can’t wait for part 2 after you finish the series!

As someone who was only a year old when the show started and 9 years old when it ended, I have vivid memories of my grandmother and aunt RELIGIOUSLY watching this (even to the point of buying all the seasons on VHS). Out of curiosity I decided to watch it this past January and I was blown away by how good the writing is. I'm only nearing the end of season 3 now, but so far the writing is even on par with The Sopranos in my opinion. It's clever, witty, nuanced with a dash of camp. Definitely in my top 5 TV shows of all time.

Ugh this show is of my favorite guilty pleasures from the 2000s. I enjoy all of them for one reason or another. Susan definitely had several moments that assassinate her character (as they all do) but I think it was the hypocrisy that made everyone lose empathy for her. Bree is my favorite, such a complex character. She was such an ice queen when the show began and watching her melt through the show was such a journey. Though I can see Bree has done the most ruthless things in the show, some that should've been unforgivable. Gaby is my next fave. She's made enormous mistakes but she learns so much through her time on the show. She becomes more down to earth and open hearted. Lynette also went on such a journey as well, I think she is the actual control freak of the show imo. Bree and her problems down the road unraveled that more for me. Lynette trying to have everything all at once through the whole show never goes away but she makes concessions. Edie has my heart. She was the one we all wanted to be friends with realistically. Overall the show is amazing and we need more content!!!

I've always enjoyed Edith Britt (Edie). Her honesty, her "bitchiness", her sexuality. When the writers made the following choiche: "As a teenager, Edie spend her time with the freaks hanging out by the loading docks." I loved her even more. To me, she feels very relatable. An outsider trying to assimilate, but using the wrong tools for it ( e.g. men, extortion, agony, envy). That outsider will never be able to reach inclusivity. Because of what she brings to the table. The toxiticy that she (un)willingly brings with her attemps, comes from outside. And not from within the circle she so... DESPERATLY craves to be part of.
