Series 7 Exam | The Gold-Standard of Financial Advisor Licenses

The Series 7 license is a securities license which enables the holder to solicit, purchase and/or sell most securities products, such as stocks, mutual funds, options, municipal securities, and variable contracts.
Holding the Series 7 license is a requirement for all U.S. stockbrokers and is considered to be the gold standard of financial advisor licenses.
The Series 7 exam is administered by FINRA, which is the government-authorized, non-profit organization responsible for administering all securities licensing procedures and requirements testing.

It order to buy and sell securities on behalf of clients, you’ll need a Series 63 license and a Series 6 or 7 - in order to sit for any of those exams, you’ll first need to pass the SIE Exam.

Hey Kyle, congratulations. We recommend taking your series 7 exam if you are planning on becoming a financial advisor. If you plan on executing trades on behalf of your clients, you will also need to pass your series 63.

Hey Shawn, of each of the exams, I would say the series 7 is the most valuable. The SIE will teach out the fundamentals, the series 7 will teach you much more than a series 6 (although they function similarly), and the series 63 will allow you to trade on behalf of others in your state. If you want to be able to trade on behalf of others, then you’ll want to take the SIE, then I would recommend getting a Series 7, then a Series 63.

Will you be managing only your own, or will you be investing on behalf of clients? In order to buy and sell securities on behalf of clients, you’ll typically start with your SIE, then Series 6 or 7 (with 7 being more robust and difficult), then Series 63.
