I'm also a total noob but I bought a DeWalt 849X rotary. I figure that with modern compounds and pads, keeping the speed DOWN and paying close attention at all times with a rotary should slightly lessen the learning curve. I liken a rotary to a manual-trans vehicle: you must pay much more attention while driving vs. an automatic, but you have COMPLETE control over your vehicle regardless of the conditions. Also, a MAJOR thumbs-up for this series- you are a real professional at your craft without a doubt.

I am new to this and in every video there is something new to me that probably is obvius for you who have a lot of experience. I love this series in particular since it shows a lot of practical parts of the job. I am a big fan of you Brian. Not only the knowledge but also the way to teach and explain.

Brian, great series. I have a question when you wet sanded the scratch on the door, what grit did you use and why? I noticed you didn't step down in grit, and went straight to compounding. Please take us through that process of wet sanding with x grit, without stepping down and blending, then compounding.

Hey Brian thanks for the video, I've been playing around with the 3401 and PE8. In terms of cutting, rotary knocks down anything with 1 pass. And I found out jeweling with rotary gives the best gloss too! But hey, I still love my 3401!

I often hear about microfiber pads not working well in a forced rotation machine like the flex. What is your take on it? I would have been curious to see how well it cut with a wool pad and compare it to the rotary.
@danielcross600
@danielcross600 2 жыл бұрын
Great video and very informative, but why not just use the rotary to do the entire vehicle? I can understand why the FLEX type polishers are needed, but on larger panels it takes a lot more time. Why not just use those for isolated area and paint correction. Honestly I never used one and just always used a high speed rotary. I've been out of the business for 30 years plus and back in the day I would use the Sioux polishers. These things weighed about 15lbs, but were build to last. No plastic whatsoever and you know once the polisher was moving across the surface weight never was an issue because you wouldn't feel it. The polisher did all the work, but they were designed to last and they never varied on there their speed when you used them. If you had a build up of product they would cut right through it. Great videos!

Great video. Can/should you compensate for the polisher type by bumping up the aggressiveness of the pad and compound choice to close the gap? In other words, using the most aggressive pad and compound on the least aggressive machine? Will that plus adding a pass or 2 close the gap? I know, i know...why bother? Just learn to use a rotary...

Why is a new pin stripe not being done? The old one is faded and worn, missing in some spots. Seems like a waste to spend all that money getting the paint looking so good only to leave a terrible looking pin stripe on there.

I have an older car with single stage paint so I am always concerned about burning through the paint. Is there a relatively inexpensive thickness gauge you could recommend for non-professionals? It's hard to justify the expense when I'd only use it once or twice a year at most. Thanks.

I'm not a pro like you are and I use a Griot's garage 6". For that job you did I would of use Menzerna heavy cut 400 and put more pressure than you did.I don't know the result but I'm sure some of the swirls would be gone. I did a very damage car and with they equipment I told you I had great result. Don't get me wrong I do not say you don't know what you are doing because I'm a poor beginner but I was surprise at the way you handle the GG?.

Great video Brian..! Would like your thoughts here.. One thing I really respect on your videos is you stress on knowledge and practice being just as, if not more important than products. I know there are many factors involved, hell even weather conditions can play a factor on results. We all have our favorite brands, models, pads and products, which work best for our individual styles. Recently while performing minor paint correction/polishing I was not getting the same results on the vertical panels as opposed to the horizontal panels (Horizontal: Adams Swirl Killer 15mm polisher 5.75lbs). I switched to another polisher out of anger (Vertical: Maxshine M15. 5.1lbs). Changing only the polisher and using the same pad, cleaning system, lighting, polish, # of passes, and what I believe to be same polishing style and pressure (other than a very small difference in polisher weight) I was able to get the same good results on the vertical panels. The vehicle has been garage kept since new, is a 20k mile 2016 (Bright White) T&C Chrysler minivan that received a full decontamination wash, iron removal, claybar, etc. After seeing your video on how different polisher "models" are able to give such drastic differences in results, do you think it is possible different polisher "makes" can also have noticeable differences primarily when working horizontally to vertically? Unfortunately, I had completed the roof and hood before moving to the sides so was unable to compare for myself. I have not seen or heard anyone mention any differences (if any) between how they may polish vertically to horizontally. Do you have a different polishing "style" or subtle differences used for vertical/horizontal panel polishing or correcting?
@apexdetail85

Same style...but I tend to change polisher, pad, or correction liquid to compensate.
