To help you out with some of the terminology: The disorder that Marc/Steven has is called dissociative identity disorder. The term for the different "personalities" is alter. When one of them is controlling the body, that alter is fronting. There can be multiple alters fronting at once, which usually gets a bit chaotic and one of them has take the lead. The alters that are not fronting, are usually in their own sort of space inside the mind of that person. That space can look very different depending on the alters personality, etc. The alters can also vary in age, gender, sexual orientation, etc. The common theory in psychology is that DID is caused by one or multiple traumatic events in childhood. It's important for that event to take place before the personality of that child can fully form. Usually this is the case between the age of 8 and 12. The traumatic event causes the developing personality to splinter, with different alters developing that may at first not be aware of one another. These alters can take on different roles inside of the larger system of that person. Marc exhibits signs of being a defender/persecutor alter. It seems that Marc/Steven already had the disorder, when they nearly died in Egypt and struck a deal with Khonshu. Potentially Steven only developed later one. Btw, alters and merge with one another. And potentially, as people with the disorder get better mentally, the alters merge more and more, so a goal could be to become one personality by the end. However, I don't know if that's a reachable goal necessarily.

The only thing I would add is that there are a couple theories in regards to how it develops, the main one being Structural Dissociation, and that for most the main goal, at least at the start, is to learn to coexist with the other alters. However, of course, Dissociative Disorders are incredibly under researched

​@@colemacgrath2005 Again, it is under researched, so of course it is going to be under diagnosed, especially considering experts can't agree on whether or not it is real, like almost every, if not every, other mental health diagnosis that exists. DID is as common as red hair, and that is just going on the people diagnosed with DID. So yeah, when compared to the world population, it's not a lot, but if you actually look at the math, that is still hundreds of thousands of people. Also, you didn't answer my question as to what the person said wrong.

I'm 51 years old when I was a child around 12 Iron-Man, Spider-Man, The Hulk and Moon Knight were my top four favorite Marvel characters, so you can't imagine how much a kick I'm getting out of seeing them do Moon Knight right best start of any Marvel series thus far.

I really do think Mark is the primary. He has a troubled relationship with a mother and wife, Steven has a job which he may have started recently and a mother who he seems to only be leaving messages for, I don't get that direct communication vibe when he talks to her on the phone. I think Steven came in to existence to hide Mark from anyone looking for him. Who would think a clutzy nerd would be such an effective combatant/agent type person?

The assumption that there's a "primary" may be a mistake. It doesn't make a lot of sense, and isn't supported by current research. Some systems use terms like "primary" or "core", but that's subjective internal politics and, scientifically speaking, outdated thinking. "Host" is a more broadly useful term, but it's a fluid role. Whoever spends the most time in control of the body during any given period, dealing with most everyday type stuff, is commonly described as a host. From what we've seen/heard in the show so far, it would appear that Marc used to be host, probably for many years, but hasn't been for months. Steven having a flat and a job with a name tag seems to indicate that he's the current host at the time the show begins. Granted, he's not consistently the one going to work (it seems someone's been showing up late, going by the name Scotty, socializing with the security guard and asking a tour guide out on a date), but it does seem that Steven is the one who's most in control (just not *very* in control) lately, making him the host, temporary or otherwise.

This is a great answer! It's certainly changed how I think about it and I didn't even consider a third identity but that makes sense. People aren't disrespecting him by getting his name wrong, etc, a third person must be the explanation!

​@@seanbarron2890 Systems can get pretty large in numbers, especially counting alters who don't come out much (who may or may not populate a kind of "inner world" constructed by the needs of the alters, which can get very large, complex and detailed if there are a lot of them), and typically including child alters who may be either holding trauma memories or kept away from them. Usually, finding out you have a brain roommate is a precursor to finding out you have a bunch of them. I don't think I'm aware of any adult systems with only two alters (who didn't just find out recently). If Steven split off from Marc a few months ago, as clues seem to indicate, that definitely wasn't the first split, because DID forms in childhood, and if Marc's been living a highly stressful life on top of unprocessed childhood stuff, Steven probably isn't even the only split to have occurred in adulthood. I'd be surprised if there are any fewer than 20 alters in there, so three frequent fronters is a small number. Every system is different, of course, but I don't know how much of an outlier the writers are going for.

I had such a big laugh over the security guy saying that Larry from maintenance was going to be angry over what Steven did to the bathrooms. Speaking from janitorial experience, if I were Larry and I saw the state the bathrooms were in after the events of the previous episode, I would be VERY put out.

In the comics he was born Marc Spector and Steven is one of his alters (personalities). Fun fact: Steven Grant is also Captain America's first and middle name so he might've chosen that name subconsciously when that personality was created.

@@DeniLoVe12 Yeah you're right because when Layla gets through on the phone she says "I haven't hear from you in months" then later she says she thought he was using coded message on the phone meaning she's not aware of the Steven personality despite they clearly have a long history if they are married.

Mr. Knight looked awesome in this episode. Another great episode. The back and forth between Steven Grant and Marc Spector was my favorite part of this episode. Khonshu looks terrific in this series. Arthur Harrow is a great villain. I love the visuals in this show. Arthur Harrow being a former avatar of Khonshu, was an excellent twist. Arthur Harrow roasting Khonshu was cool-blooded. I'm also enjoying this show. I loved the interaction between Steven Grant and Arthur Harrow in this episode. Khonshu has no chill. Another thing I loved about this episode was Layla and her interaction with Steven Grant was fun to watch

I think Marc is the ‘real’ (or original) personality. Steven is a more recent character that only manifested within the last several months (he didn’t talk to his mum; it was always to voicemail)

I think Steven is only a few months old, created after Marc had stopped talking to Layla. He didn't actually TALK to his mother, he was just leaving messages on an answering machine, so who knows whether he was even actually calling anyone? Plus Marc has a documented history, i.e. a passport, people who knew him in the past, news articles about his mercenary career, etc.. Whereas Steven only has a bunch of coworkers who don't seem to have known him very long. We've never even seen any ID or mail addressed to Steven.

I always love your reactions my dear. We didn’t hear him speak to his mother, we heard him leave messages to who he believes is his mother. Khonshu already verified the body is Marc Spector’s. Remember Khonshu indicated to Marc, he said he could handle it. When he found Marc he was dying not Steven abs the voice in the last episode is Khonshu. Marc is the primary persona.

My favorite bit of this episode is that the ad on the bus when Steven is fighting the jackal says, "Reuniting you with your better half," which is a reference to both the fact that Layla is Marc's wife and the developing relationship between Steven and Marc.

It does actually happen quite frequently that people with DID/multiplicity don’t know until later in life- the alter/headmate that fronts most often is typically the least aware- they expect to be missing time and don’t typically form the hypothesis that they’re not alone in there, they just assume that type of amnesia is what everyone experiences.

Marc is the one who has a wife, he's the one who made the deal with konchu, he's the one who has an entire past background as a mercenary. We know next to nothing about Steven's past and actually he has never spoken to his mom in these first two episodes, he has only left her voicemails. Konchu has referred to Steven as a worm and a parasite. Marc was very much aware of Steven but Steven had no idea who Marc was. Layla who was married to Marc doesn't know anything about Steven. Based on all of the evidence that we have, I think it's pretty obvious that Marc is the primary identity and Steven is the fake identity. The question is, how long has Steven existed and is he truly the result of DID or is he an intentional creation to serve a purpose?

Marc Spector is the primary alter. Among others, Steven Grant is one that comes up as a secondary alter. There are others in the comics but the writers and primary director/executive producer has said they’ll chiefly focus on these two in the series. Steven only left messages on his “Mother’s van.” I doubt she’s A. Real and B. Alive. In the IMDb credits there is a young actress credited as his mother. In the comics she died when he was a child. I personally think he’s leaving messages for no one.

The name is Dissociative Identity Disorder. In canon, Marc is the system manager/host meaning he is the first. An odd combination, but it happens. So, Marc is aware of the alters as they arise. That particular combination has the ability to mimic/sublimate alters that arise naturally as fictives. That is why there are so many "fake identities." They are all real. It's just Marc kept a wall between them, and only allows them to come forward when they are needed to further the cover. The issue is the wall between Marc and Stephen started to break. So, Marc decided to try to patch it by living as Stephen by day entirely. That, as any therapist will tell you, isn't the right move. It actually accelerated the wall breaking and made Marc and Stephen switch faster and more often, favoring Stephen over him.

Ok...some possible spoilers here. I've never read the comics, but this is just what I've found out online. My thoughts on the show are included too because the show has changed some things about the comic character. Marc is the primary personality. Mr Agent (Steven's suit) was a great laugh in the show. However, I think in the comics, Mr Agent was a calm and collected version of Moon Knight who is more of a detective side, and a not so violent side. I don't think he's quite that comical in the comics. Also, in the comics, Steven is more of a rich, celebrity personality. I think that Steven was changed for the show because Marvel thought people would compare him to Batman if he kept the rich celebrity personality. Anyway, I think Marc tends to take control when Steven goes to sleep. Steven believes his body likes to get up and wander around, but I think this is because Marc has knocked himself out when he has control. However, Marc always returns Steven home when he's truly done, taping up the door, and strapping Steven to the bed again so that Steven thinks it was all a dream. This is why I think Steven lost 2 days in Episode 1. Marc never lost consciousness, using the body for about 48 hour, then finally let Steven wake up at home again. As far as I'm aware, Moon Knight has 5 personalities in the comics. Marc (a mercenary), Steven (A rich celebrity), Jake (A street-wise cab driver), Mr Knight and Moon Knight. But currently in the show, I think it's only 2 true personalities at the moment: Marc and Steven. Mr Knight and Moon Knight are just each characters version of the suit and aren't separate personalities like in the comics. Hopefully, we meet Jake in the next episode. Marc is married to Layla, and Steven is sadly alone, so who asked out that woman who asked Steven if he was still up for the date? I'm thinking Jake asked that woman out because Steven didn't ask her out, and I seriously doubt Marc asked her out because of the marriage to Layla. So, I think we'll see Jake appearing soon. The question is though: if Jake asked her out, when Jake takes over the body? Not sure on that. Maybe Marc and Jake are aware of each other, so they let each other take control at times willingly when Steven is sleeping, and Steven is the only one who until now never knew of the other 2.

I think Marc is the primary and perhaps Steven became more of a thing after Marc was brought back from the dead. I think the clues from these two episodes show us that Marc has been carefully curating Steven's life so that he doesn't catch on. Hence replacing the fish and having the storage locker where he keeps his things and the Mobile phone hidden in the wall. The woman who he had the date with as well probably met Marc somewhere. I think it will be interesting to see if Steven is a personality that has been with Marc his whole life or perhaps it's a side effect of having been brought back to life. Perhaps before that Steven was one of his cover aliases.

From what I understand, Steven Grant was one of the alias's that Marc Spector traveled under as a mercenary, but after coming into contact with Khonshu his mind became addled, and Steven became a separate personality.

I think episode 4 you learn why Steven is Steven. The tell in the story is what evidence is there to what is real. Even in the comics in a few story lines what is real is elusive.

I don't think liking Steven's suit more is an unpopular opinion. In fact, I think the whole reason it's featured in this series is because it was a very popular outfit in the Moon Knight comics. :) Anyone else feel really bad when Layla kept saying "you are Marc Spector" to Steven, acting as if Steven himself wasn't even there?

I think the Steven alter was created recently, after Marc left Layla while trying to push her away to protect her. I also think Marc unintentionally put some of Layla's personality and interests into Steven.

Depending on what they are or are not pulling from the comics for this show, I'm am very much getting the impression that "Steven" didn't exist, in a sense, until recent years when Mark went into hiding. Steven's aversion to violence definitely suggests he is the personality born out of a traumatic experience, possibly even guilt, given Mark's propensity for violence. We actually didn't ever see Steve get in touch with his supposed 'mum', the times when we do see him talking on the phone it was always him leaving a voice mail.

I haven't read the comics, so it's hard for me to determine who is the primary. I'd like to think it's Steven but that may not be true, I don't know. Although, Marc was saying after I'm done, you'd never have to see me again, which tells me that Steven may be the primary, but we don't know, there could be a different primary, hidden within, who doesn't come out often, like with Jane, from Doom Patrol

I know it has been a month, but I can pass on something I have picked up, about how things have passed without knowing about Marc - I watched a handful of videos on a DID channel, and from their videos, amnesia and Alters hiding things from other Alters to protect them is a very normal thing. From what I have heard (and I keep qualifying my statements that way because my info is secondhand) the process of learning one has DID and starting to treat it involves bringing down amnesia barriers and making it easier for Alters to not miss time.

Without giving comic spoilers like most of everyone here in the comics. Using only what the episodes established. In the 1st ep Steven only leaves messages to his mum. And in this episode the wife tells Steven that Marc has a mother that he just doesnt speak to. And the god thing tells Marc he was a corpse when he found him. Note he was speaking directly to Marc and not Steven. Do with that information as you will in regards to who the primary personality is
