Not sure how my cousins are going to take it when I tell them they're not a member of my family anymore?

There's an important distinction in second cousins. Sure they're distantly related but most people aren't going to see their second cousins on christmas. I don't even know my second cousins.
@VideoNozoki3 жыл бұрын
@@Tomotix : My grandfather is one of three brothers (they fought in the war together / all made it back together / all 3 grew up and live in the same city / very tight family with my grandfather and his 2 brothers). (The three brothers and their wives meet about once a week to have an early dinner with each other.) All of their children (4 sons including my father, are cousins). That would make my father's cousins my "first cousins once removed", although (because they are the same age as my father, I usually call them Uncle)(but we know we are cousins / they are within 5 years of each other, grew up like brothers / so I feel more comfortable calling them Uncle). All of these cousins (my "uncles" / first cousins once removed) have children = 7 of us my age). All 7 of us are second cousins (but we just say, "This is my cousin" because all 7 of us are about the same age. We meet as a family on a regular basis (maybe eat for a holiday meal twice a year) + (someone's wedding or funeral). ☆I will DEFINITELY see my "second cousins" for Christmas or a summer BBQ. ☆Honestly, we meet much more than twice a year (5 times a year is not unusual) and we go to the same church (although some are away for university sometimes), but at a minimum, we all meet about twice a year for food, board games, and conversation. They may not be my nuclear family, but they are absolutely my family. We have been to each other's weddings (but some are not married yet). We (nuclear family) go to different schools (live in different areas of the city), but my sister went to Prom with the 2 sister cousins (they played dress-up for a couple hours before)(then a limo of 4 boys from their school showed up)(it was like a group date, and they got in trouble for drinking a little, but not a big deal). My second cousins are absolutely a part of my family. I know them by name and see them a couple times a year. John the Baptiste certainly knew Jesus. Wikipedia says, "John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth were relatives.[30][31]" John baptized Jesus. They were related and regularly interacted with each other; they certainly were not strangers... They were relatives on a regular speaking basis... family. (John the Baptist and Jesus were relatives & Watson didn't say 'nuclear family')
@gladtobeangry3 жыл бұрын

@@VideoNozoki As a blobber, I must say I truly admire the lengths to which an English person(can't say for sure, just assuming) will go to make a point. You don't get that much here in the blobby areas. My point was more just you have to draw the line somewhere. I'm sure there is someone out there who is close to their relative that was split off from their family tree 7 generations back, but that doesn't mean everyone should consider their 500 closest relatives "family"
@VideoNozoki3 жыл бұрын
@@Tomotix : Not "split off a tree 7 generations back." John's mother (Elizabeth) and Jesus' mother (Mary) were cousins. Elizabeth and Mary's mothers were sisters. John and Jesus regularly interacted, John Baptized Jesus, they regularly had conversations together... they were family. If "you have to draw the line somewhere", it might be drawn at people who are unaware that they are related and do not interact with each other. People who know they are related and regularly interact with each other are definitely related & family.
