I adjusted my float level by holding the reservoir lid upside down. Look at how the float sits resting on the needle. Make sure the float rests/sits parallel to the housing. So when the float raises up half way, fuel supply is shut off from fuel pump. Secondary test you can do is idle engine for a minute. Switch off, remove air horn, disconnect small clip that secures linkage to main jet metering pin, carefully twist/remove reservoir lid. Check fuel level in carburetor reservoir. Fuel level should be just below half way. My engine performs perfect through all conditions. The only reason I overhauled my carburetor replacing new master gasket kit & throttle body was because its a 636 S with has a different throttle body set up to the 539 S. 👋 🇦🇺

Lots of great info! Any chance you know where I can get a needle spring? My grandson lost ours.

My bowl has no bounce to it. Like my needle is worn..??

There should be a tiny spring that sits inside the needle, that gives the float bounce. Probably whoever disassembled lost the spring without realising.

Hi there Rick I saw your video on setting the float on KZbin and have followed the ajustment using a 3/8ths drill = 9.5mm approx I had to bend the float tab quite a lot to get it right as it was set high to about 5/8ths inch. However the engine was working fine for years with the float set like that. The second carb I have was also apparently set high to 5/8ths so I was wondering before I set the second one why two carbs would be set so far away from the standard setting as you point out as 3/8th Any ideas as I want to get it right? thanks Kevin Chester, UK

Hi Rick, I have determined the problem with my Carter WO carburetor (that won't idle) is caused by a vacuum leak located at the throttle valve shaft on the side where the gas pedal connects to it. Most likely due to the return spring tension being on that side in my 1951 Crosley Hot Shot. Is there a fix for this? If so can you describe the fix including any parts needed? Thanks, Glenn

Likely, due to the cross-torsion inflicted by a one-sided pull, both side will need bushings and likely a new shaft.

Carter engineers determined that the optimum fuel level in the bowl was achieved at a float setting of 3/8". 5/8" will see the needle closing too soon and could lead to fuel starvation at prolonged higher power settings.
