One of the gems from this excellent discussion is that humanity needs divine revelation, especially when it comes to moral guidance, because Allah swt alone has the best perspective. Most often, humanity is most concerned with here and now. At best, we think in terms of generations, forgetting the eternal consequences of the akhirah.

Everything in Islam is consistent, what a mercy to have Islamic rules to abide by! People who don’t believe say they dont need God to be good but their definition of charity, for example, becomes what ever amount they feel and when ever they feel like giving. As a result, we can’t have a society wide impactful effort to help those in need in a substantial way. I know it’s not on the subject, exactly, but even the perspective of sexual behavior is grounded in consistent moral boundaries while these modern perspectives are incoherent and inconsistent and they are not good for the individual or for the society.

The concept of freedom of speech in Islam is guided by Islamic teachings and principles, which encompass spiritual, psychological, emotional, and physical aspects. While there are similarities and differences between the Western conception and the Islamic tradition of free speech, Islam provides a comprehensive framework for ethical conduct in speech. Respectful and Constructive Communication: Islam emphasizes the importance of using speech in a respectful and constructive manner. Muslims are encouraged to speak with kindness, wisdom, and empathy, promoting harmony and understanding among individuals and communities. "Speak to people in a good way." (Quran 2:83) Prohibition of Falsehood and Slander: Islam strictly prohibits spreading falsehoods, slander, and gossip. Muslims are urged to speak the truth and refrain from engaging in harmful speech that can damage reputations and create discord. "And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned." (Quran 17:36) Accountability for Words: Islam teaches that individuals are accountable for their words and their consequences. Muslims are encouraged to be mindful of their speech and its potential impact on others, understanding that they will be held responsible for their words on the Day of Judgment. "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak goodness or remain silent." (Sahih Bukhari, 6018) Promoting Justice and Truth: Islam encourages the use of speech to advocate for justice, truth, and righteousness. Muslims are urged to speak out against oppression, wrongdoing, and injustice, promoting social welfare and positive change in society. "O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives." (Quran 4:135) Respecting Limits and Boundaries: Islam recognizes that freedom of speech is not absolute and must be exercised within the bounds of morality, decency, and respect for others. Speech that incites hatred, promotes harm, or violates the rights of others is considered unacceptable. "And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge." (Quran 6:108) These examples highlight the importance of ethical communication in Islam, focusing on truthfulness, accountability, justice, and respecting boundaries. The Quran and Hadith literature provide extensive guidance on speech and ethics, emphasizing the responsible and purposeful use of language. It is important for individuals to seek knowledge from scholars and reliable sources to develop a comprehensive understanding of Islamic ethics and its application to different aspects of life, including freedom of speech.

Extremely informative and I agree with a lot that was said but some phrases used were very problematic. Phrases like ‘close your legs’, and ‘loose’ are disappointing, probably lost a lot of viewers at those points.

Invite ˹all˺ to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and kind advice, and only debate with them in the best manner. Surely your Lord ˹alone˺ knows best who has strayed from His Way and who is ˹rightly˺ guided.

Assalamu Alaykum. This was insightful. For the next time around, I recommend more of a lecture format than a discussion to avoid inadvertently injecting levity into a subject that already poses a fitna to many of us
