Sustainability is the future, but how do we really make changes and how do we keep it sexy? I went to the International Woolmark Prize in London and spoke to some of fashion’s key players like Tim Blanks and Carine Roitfeld about this subject. I also met with Duran Lantink and Ronald van der Kemp, two fashion designers who have been on the cutting edge of sustainable fashion, while at the same time creating to-die-for clothes. And I spoke to model and activist ‪@cameronrussell7623‬ about how we can all make a change on a personal level.

She said covid testing doesn't work and fed into all the 'plandemic' conspiracies along with her husband. The Dutch media picked it up and she got criticized for it. She couldn't stand that and said she wouldn't be on social media anymore. Also she and her family ignore all covid measures. She is 'woke' now.

Thank you so much for this content Doutzen and for the important issues you're talking about. I love that you also have more light-hearted topics and behind the scenes photoshoot and makeup videos too! P.s. does anyone know of brands that have good sustainable feminine products (cloth pads, tampons, divacups, razors, etc)?

I miss Doutzen so much! Her videos helped me go through hard times in my life ( ED, runaway from toxic parents ) and build my life again. I started work out for the first time in my life, started eating healthy, felt this family love, that I’ve never had. She is sensitive spiritual close to nature person, so am I, and her videos are really different from other models vlog. She has ( and always had ) this wiseness, so you understand DK is not about beautiful appearance, but all about inside. I really don’t care about this situation around vactination, it didn’t change my mind, I still think Doutzen is humble kind person. I really hope to see her again❤

I'm finally able to do that (financially) and it's soooo satisfying! You think longer about buying something (checking quality, is it still fashionable a few years later, is it expressing your personality, etc.) and my closets fills up with high quality pieces that I love, so if I don't know what to wear it's because I love every piece and not because of (like with H&M and other cheap fast fashion brands) 'meh, this is broken' or 'meh this is outdated' or 'meh this is just mediocre' and so on. It takes a while to fill the closet and costs money (and you first have to find brands with good quality clothes), but in the end you actually spend less long-term. But I also want to start tailoring my own stuff and repairing clothes properly :)

Thank you, Doutzen for talking about important matters here on your channel. It is so, so important to spread the message and to make change happen. I've been investing in timeless, classic, good quality pieces for two, to three years now, I don't have a lot of money but if you buy less, and better quality, you don't buy things so often. A simple white t-shirt for 40 euros will last me so much longer than one for 5 euros at primark. The problem of fast fashion is not only the mass production, the loss of value and the waste that is created, it is also the modern slavery people in the production are held in. It is often stated that they get paid the minimum wage they need to get, but are they able to afford their life? no, they are not. and this is also something people need to talk about. Sometimes "made in Bangladesh" is better than "made in Italy" if it means that the workers are treated correctly and paid enough. I am currently reading "Slave to Fashion" by Safia Minney and I really recommend it to everyone who wants to be more conscious about Fashion and the World. Love from Austria, xx Laura

This was one of your most intriguing topics you've proposed. The same question can be asked of architecture and those who design it. Are modern buildings sustainable? Is architecture art or simply utility? When you survey the landscape of buildings you will find there are similarities to design and fashion. Sure there are sustainable buildings erected today that could be considered disposable as there is in fashion and the construction of disposable garments. And then there is haute couture pieces that have more attention to detail than most can truly appreciate. I'm reminded of the loss of the Notra Dame in Paris this past year. When it burned down the world stopped. I remember local channels stopping their regular broadcasting to go live with the news of it burning. The Notra Dame was not a sustainable building by modern standards. However, it did represent the best for its time. At the root of your question of sustainability is the underlying question of "liking" fashion or "appreciating" fashion. Like I was once told, you can not appreciate something without first understanding something about its construction, composition, the work and effort to make it happen. Without this understanding you can only like something. When it comes to fashion and architecture we should strive to appreciate it by understanding the selection of facings, shaping, and fabrics the designer selected to execute a finished work that in the end compliments the person wearing it. Regarding the loss of the Notra Dame, there were no seams in the stained glass separating one color from the next. How they did this was always a mystery and no notes or history was ever gathered about this construction. Paris vowed to rebuild, but for those of us who appreciate how unique those rose stained glass windows were, we don't see how that will happen. Your videos are interesting and provocative.

Another well thought out and beautifully produced video. I am all for sustainability. It is so tempting to go to Primark and other similar stores and buy multiple cheap items. People get a buzz from bagging a bargain. The culture needs to change to one of quality. Clothing should be about a closet with several favorite items you can mix and match that are great quality and have longevity. Not so much a chest of drawers bulging with multiple cheap items in different colors that will end up in landfill. Fashion doesnt have to be expensive to be sustainable. Some of my best items were from high street retailers. Thanks for addressing this issue Doutzen ❤

I really appreciate that you use your voice to reach out to many people with this topic. On the other hand, you also use your name to promote companies such as Hunkemöller, which do not work in the sense of sustainability. You should know, that you won´t lose any fame or reputation by quitting the contract with companies as Hunkemöller. Your image would even get more authentic and you´d be loved for that. Right now, I can´t take you seriously because of the contradiction between working for Hunkemöller and speaking up for sustainability.

Less is more, so true! Also I don't like how sustainability is being hijacked as a marketing tool by major clothing brands while the reality is that unless they own the whole supply chain they can never guarantee the sustainability especially if they buy clothing in bulk for $1, they gotta know the factory will have to cut corners for that.

I loved your channel since video #1! You are a breath of fresh air! On the topic I have two questions: With all the sustainability talk, people advise us to purchase expensive, high-quality items. But if I buy something to keep for years, it can’t be trendy, can it? Haute couture is definitely sustainable. But most people can’t afford it. Sure we can use it as an inspiration, but what do we wear? xoxo

Hi Doutzen! Thanks for joining the movement and sharing your insights. It is about time we make better decisions and think long term. I don´t agree with certain opinions such as Couture being that sustainable as you won't wear it on a daily basis and requires a lot of chemicals to clean. I love what Duran and Cameron are doing. We need to make fashion sustainable again, yet we need to keep it available for every occasion (not only the Oscars or the runway!) and every pocket. Keep the good work!

I have been critical before, here I loved your attitude, on wanting to learn and being open to hearing new things and the interview with Cameron Russell. Wow!! #systemicchange Oops.. shortlived.. cause then you share that video of 'thank you coronavirus"

Liefs

I love the idea of buying better quality and using them longer. One problem I have faced is that as the price of clothes increases, the chance that it needs to be dry cleaned increases. Dry cleaning is expensive and most of the chemical they use is not environmental friendly. I hope the industry comes up with some innovative ideas soon!!!
