I still enjoy the ad, the tension depicted, but then I also did some flirty fighting (ok, more very low level capoeira in a sports course), which was.... pretty... Nice. Yeas. It's a dialogue. Same as in dancing. And a duel can be referred to as "the dance" (Mozart, I think in Figaro? "Will der Herr Graf den Tanz mit mir wagen?" - "does his highness want to risk the dance with me?"). Getting pushed through the bloody skylight would be a bit of a mood killer, though.

Now I kind of want to see "Dress making with a sword." Imagine you're at all party where baddies attack. One slice from your sword and your too long dress is now something you can move in. (Or two+ slices because, let's face it, dresses have A Lot of fabric) Or you're wearing a pencil skirt (not sure why) and need to make slits down the sides so you can move more than an inch at a time.
@williwiebe2 жыл бұрын
The pencil skirt I was wearing yesterday has a zipper in the back at the bottom for exactly that reason (I imagine).
@KatieCottingham2 жыл бұрын
😍 I could 100% imagine the tear away construction to make this look good. 😁 And the tight dress dilemma implied with the pencil skirt is definitely a design flaw for numerous cocktail dresses and formal dresses that have that fitted silhouette. It would make creating clean tear sections a little more detailed, likely needing a second or third dress for each cut, but still very possible. For non-performance wear, I probably wouldn't make it too tight to not show the area of the break. Side Note: If you can't move more than an inch easily in your pencil skirt that hits at or slightly above or below the knee, check for a back kick vent. Most manufacturers will put an X of stitching to keep the vent closed and prevent damage in transit and while trying on in store, but it's made to be cut so the vent can do it's job and allow for easy walking! The average pencil skirt with a modern kick vent is totally something you can run in, so unless it's got a traditional construction (kinda rare in non vintage pieces) or goes significantly past the knee to mid calf, you should have good range of motion. 👍

Hmm... My personal take on this is that Mentor Fights either has an active form of teaching (such as Pearl from Steven Universe teaching Connie) or a more passive form of teaching (such as insulting banter about skills). The common underlying emotions in this type is normally either frustration/desperation (of the student towards the mentor), exasperation (of thr mentor towards the student) or determination (of the student towards the mentor). Flirty Fights involve a lot of banter that is actively written as a way of Toying with any of the participants. The flirty banter is normally comprised of backhanded compliments from one or both parties and active compliments that are underlined with tension and sometimes frustration.
@caiolucas82572 жыл бұрын
Flirty fights are meant to be sexual/romantic, mentor fights are simply the mentor trying to teach the student a lesson.
@maximeteppe76272 жыл бұрын
@@caiolucas8257 yes, most flirty fights are usually evenly matched (both characters are mutually compatible, which is shown through similar fighting styles, emotion, attitude and ability), while mentory fights are usually one sided (the master demonstrating a flaw in the student, with very different levels of ability, very different goals and underlying emotions - and possibly different styles as a result). There is room for subversion though: you could imagine a character acting as if they were in a flirty fight, but being outmached or toying with the other, demonstrating a lack of compatibility through the fight - and by extension the relationship's imbalance- or you can have a mentoring fight where master and students are evenly matched, or even where the student is stronger, but the master uses his key teaching to keep up. Which would be harder to deal with since actively it goes against the most efficient way to show that the master has information that the other hasn't.

Really wish they still did, but then again, their last few decades making them were...not good. Up through World War 1 era examples are generally very good, things start to get spotty in the in between the World Wars but there's still some well made gems, and pretty much every thing after World War 2 is pure wallhanger or dress sword, save for an occasional anomaly that really stands out, and even most of those were intended as presentation swords, but they actually put in the effort for a single on off for one reason or another and made something functional as well. Admittedly, considering the razor branch was proving the be the money making section at the time with the shift in warfare it makes sense from a business perspective.

Meshes well with the thrown against wall/flirt/threaten short from last week! Fun Fact: Directors, including those who direct commercials, watch things...sometimes without context. They see a fight where the actors cannot fight and it has quick cuts...but they don't KNOW that the many cuts are because the actors cannot fight...they just assume that is how one shoots and cuts a fight. Don;t know if that was the case here, but it is possible. And HA! See? You have to turn a "spear" fight into a "staff" fight for it to be even REMOTELY interesting. Spears are to fighting what "PONG" is to video games. (Except PONG is more fun!)
@thefaboo2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the cuts might also be to allow a shorter shoot time. More cuts (could) mean you can do fewer takes of a long shot and piece together the parts that worked the best. Cuts can increase the pace too, which you might need to keep people watching even though it's an ad.
@classicslover2 жыл бұрын
@@thefaboo Well for a shorter shoot time, you would have to be editing "in-camera", meaning you know exactly what you want from every angle and exactly how much of each shot. Most professionals don't take that chance. They'd rather have more to work with in case the company/studio/client wants options. And they always do. ;) And yes, you are so very right! Cuts increase the pace...but then...Jackie Chan increases the pace to ridiculous levels with fewer cuts. There is the skill in the fight, and there is the skill in the camera/editing when you DON'T have the skill in the fight.

@dinodob44302 жыл бұрын
Cool breakdown. 🙂 I wonder if there are restrictions about how much sword fighting "violence" you can show in an advert during the day and if those restrictions are why there are so many cuts in the fight scene? They'll want an advert they can show at any time in any country, and maybe in some territories people with swords slashing at each other in an advert during the daytime is a no-no, even if it's comedic in nature, so they put a high number of cuts in the fight scene to get around this restrictions.

Or maybe it's just timing? If you put in a bunch of cuts, you can tell editors that if they need to reduce X number of seconds, they can cut straight from time X to time Y, and if you have a basket of a few of those of those you get a lot of flexibility.

I love when you review flirty fights, perhaps because you seem to enjoy it so much.

Imagine going to the emergency room and explaining "Well I got this text that told me to go to this deserted mansion, where I got into a sword fight with a beautiful woman, and she cut almost all my clothes off and then I fell through a skylight and landed in a bed full of glass."

As a sabeur, my first thought when the female appeared was "her point in line hand position is wrong" (should be palm facing the floor, but then it'd hide the guard from the camera, so there's that.)

Growing up in 1960's and 70s america, I would see wilkinson sword advertisements all the time. I don't think I've seen one in decades.

that is a silly advert, I love it.

Yes, sexy swordfighting and mutual consent can sell anything.

Easily the most exciting, albeit inefficient way to get a shave.

That skirt looks like a serious trip hazard! I'm trying to see how they actually did the clothes tearing. Frame by frame helps but I can't see it. Was it pre-cut and a thread pulled? "Freeing your skin" by taking it right off with broken glass!
@AndrewBlack3432 жыл бұрын
For the shirt we cut scene to where it's already split. For the skirt it's one frame solid, next split. Did they do a cut (scene) here from one sold skirt to the cut one? For the top it's really well done if it's a cut scene. For the skirt it's an easy cut scene. Jacket is a cut scene. Trousers are a cut scene. Remainder of the dress is a cut scene, he clearly cuts up the back of the dress but somehow it's cut across the top of the shoulders! With the exception of the top, they're all done with cuts. Maybe there were so many cuts so we didn't notice the scene cuts at the point where the clothes switch from 'solid' to 'slashed'.

I hope the sexy sword fight from The Animatrix shows up this month. It's not live action, but still. Be interested in hearing your comments on it

The specific short is "Final Flight of the Osiris," if anyone's wondering. And it's also fun because it's jian vs katana instead of sabers/rapiers/etc..

It is a cool fight, it’s computer generated images tho, not stage fighting per see. I wonder if they filmed models doing the fight first for reference? Also I think the studio that did that segment was the same one who did the final fantasy movie, if you remember that?
@sammiller66312 жыл бұрын
@@thomasharris7881 computer generated images can use the same phrases of a live stage fight.
@MrDalevich2 жыл бұрын
@@thomasharris7881 yeah, it was totally motion capture and it was the same studio who did the Final Fantasy movie. You remember correctly, sir.

I always enjoy your breakdowns of fights like these. I recently saw the new Kingsman movie and couldn't help wondering what your take on some of the fights would have been. I particularly enjoyed the fight with Rasputin and the characters use of Cossack dancing as a from of combat. I felt that the fighting styles helped support the characters. But I was left confused about the final fight in the movie between the two main characters and would love to see you do a video breakdown of that fight.

I mean if you're arranging empty mansions to have a flirty fight with your boyfriend /husband then I assume you have enough money for a sugar glass window above your bed to avoid the A&E trip, but I lack a girlfriend who arranges for sexy sword fights
