Personally, my favorite combination is Yoshi/Diddy. Yoshi can shoot homing eggs if I'm behind, and possibly grab a star that comes out of the egg. And Diddy can protect our lead with giant bananas that split into smaller bananas when people hit them.

To get a head start sorry if this was repeated then you have to hit the A button on go. Different than other Mario Karts and understandable if you don't like/know how to use it but that is really it.
