Wow! Your tutorial has been exceptionally informative for this novice. I had not realised the importance of changing the stitch lengths and widths. Tammy, your demonstration and pace with instruction has encouraged me to try and forget about the thought of wasting fabric. Secret is to try the stitches first on an alternative before the real project. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with me. Peace and kindness with prayers. 👌 ☕️ 🌸

@ShabbyFabrics3 жыл бұрын
Good morning Marthese! With great quality cotton fabric you should have a small amount of fraying. Felt and fleece are also a great option that eliminates fraying. - Yajaira

This is such a detailed tutorial. Would love to know the stitch length you use as I have a Bernina. Do you have any interfacing behind this panel
@ShabbyFabrics4 жыл бұрын
Generally it is whatever stitch length that you prefer, but it needs to be adjusted on smaller pieces. I would suggest you test out stitch lengths on a test piece to find out what you like before starting on the project. - Yajaira

I bought one of your quilt kits that has a lot of flowers to applique. Some really little. Turning the quilt top under my throat is a pain. I put the quilt away for now because I was getting so frustrated. Any hints about this?
@ShabbyFabrics5 жыл бұрын
I would use a free motion foot to do the applique. If you sew very slowly and just do a straight stitch, this foot would work well and you wouldn't have to turn the quilt around and around. Let us know how that works! - Tammy

Do you use any kind of stabilizer?
@ShabbyFabrics5 жыл бұрын
We didn't use any stabilizer in this project. The Heat n Bond Light we used for the fusible acts as a type of stabilizer. If you're having trouble with the applique bunching or puckering, then you can use a light weight tear-away stabilizer. - Morgan

What was the size of the small blanket stitch length and width numbers? I didn't catch if she said them or not
@harbourcolour5 жыл бұрын
I think because all machines are different, she didn't say specifically. I am going to do some samples on my machine to try out different stitches, stitch lengths and widths.
@ShabbyFabrics5 жыл бұрын
We don't usually say, because, like Laurie said, all machines are a little different. Just test your stitches on some scrap fabric to ensure you like the look of them. And the smaller the stitch, the easier it will be to maneuver around curves or corners, so keep that in mind if the piece has a lot of points or shapes. Hope that helps! - Morgan

What were final stitch length and width settings for the blanket stitch? Thank you
@ShabbyFabrics28 күн бұрын
Hi Sharon - Your stitch length and width will depend on your machine. We didn't write down those measurements for this tutorial, but you should grab some scrap fabric and do some practice stitches to see what you personally prefer. Hope this helps :) -Michelle

Do you use stabilizer paper on the back of your fabric before you applique? if not, is it necessary?
@ShabbyFabrics Жыл бұрын
We don't typically add a stabilizer to the back of our fabrics before we do an applique project, but some people choose to. It's a preference :) -Michelle

Lordy I looked up that sewing machine! wow it is very expensive! I am not a sewer who can spend that much & not really expert enough to invest that much in a sewing machine. I love your videos thank you for sharing. Could you recommend a machine that would be a good investment for a more novice sewer? Thank you, God Bless
@ShabbyFabrics4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Our Bernina is a beautiful machine that we got it a couple of years ago, and it's been lovely, but you definitely don't need to have a fancy machine to start! Jen sewed for years on a basic Singer and they work very well. We recommend researching beginner sewing machine models online - you can find reviews of all of them - and just pick one that fits in your budget. This link might be a good place to start: www.google.com/search?q=beginner+sewing+machine+recommendations&oq=beginner+sewing+machine+recommendations&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l4.7953j1j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 Good luck! - Morgan

When I use Heat and Bond, no matter what type, I find that my needle tends to gum up fairly quickly and breaks my thread. How do you stop the needle from gumming up? I usually end up doing the appliqué stitches by hand out of pure frustration. (I use Gutermann thread)

For people who don’t a digital machine ,where do we set it for a smaller stitch
@ShabbyFabrics5 жыл бұрын
There should be a dial or knob you can turn to lengthen or shorten your stitch length. Most machines should have this feature. We would recommend checking your manual for details on how to do this on your machine. -Kyla

I have a kit and just finished using the mat and pressing sheet to assemble the applique. Instead of making a pillow, I want to put this applique on a sweatshirt. I'm not sure how to do this since the shirt is already put together and there isn't a flat piece to applique on. Do I have to take the sweatshirt apart in order to applique it?
@ShabbyFabrics4 жыл бұрын
I would use a regular ironing board to iron the pieces onto the side of the sweatshirt as she prefers. At that point it would probably be easiest to hand sew the applique so she isn't inadvertently sewing through both sides of the shirt. Hope this helps. - Yajaira
