DK and Sadow work so well together, and its especially fitting because these guys are both secondary villains who have starred in their own games

How do you define "secondary"? DK was antagonizing Mario before Bowser. Hell, technically before Mario; back when he was Jumpman. And while he was antagonizing Mario, he was always the primary threat. I don't think he's ever reprised his role as a villain after Bowser appeared. Sometimes he is, as he says, an independent force (like in some of the Mario Party games), but he's never been antagonistic to anyone since the original Donkey Kong game (or DK 2 if you go with the retcon that the original DK was Cranky Kong and DK JR is the DK who became the hero).

I think the idea here is that each extra life serves as a "unique" version of him from the last checkpoint he was at. Notice how he's only able to recall the first few lines he said at the beginning of the video when another version respawned.
