If I hadn’t recently bought a bike that had a power-meter included (Giant TCR) I’d have been ordering these for sure as I didn’t previously have a power meter and I’ve ridden Speedplay pedals for 20+ years. What makes me really happy is seeing the original Tacx Neo being used as a measure of truth - I’ve had one for 5 years, it’s still serving me well but I wasn’t 100% sure how accurate it might be 😀

Great review Shane. Always impressed with how well you can match power across multiple power meters at different locations along the drive train from pedal to 'road surface'. I have Assioma Duo's and the latest Wahoo Kicker, but I have seen up to 20W variation between the two, with the Assioma on the plus side. Admitedly I could probably do with a new BB (although it feels smooth enough and I have no obvious need to change it) and there will be other losses along the chain, cogs and jockey wheels, but I don't seem to have been able to eliminate this discrepancy with regular maintenance and replacement parts (as yet no new BB bearings). Currently this is not a major problem as I like to use the Duo measurements via Zwift as my basis for training outdoors and the Kickr is just doing the smart power feedback on Zwift.But getting the best out of the system with matching power would be an obvious desired position. Ideas welcome. Are you doing any offset correction? Could it just be my BB bearings? What do you do to ensure a good match in power across your drive train?

I have this query as well. I think that as some pedal spindles of other manufacturers have longer spindles I wouldn’t think so. Surely if you zero them prior to a ride it should read as per normal. It’d be good to see some research and testing to say a definitive yes or no.
@philipwaldman
@philipwaldman 2 жыл бұрын
I'd be interested to see what the outcomes to this is, not necessarily because I am after a pair but just because. Thinking back to the sh1tshow iQ2 power meter, they had to abandon their original design because they could not get reliable data because of movement in the thread between the pedal and the power meter and the power meter and the crank. But in this case any extenders will be inboard of the pod so may not affect the measurements..
@tomandsamuel
@tomandsamuel 2 жыл бұрын
@@philipwaldman I see what you mean. I have extenders due to a pelvic injury that affects the rotation of my hip and throws my knee out. Extenders make the line of my knee less “outboard”. The extender is screwed into the crank and then the pedal into that and is solid as a rock. The only issue with them is that I can’t use carbon cranks due to the risk of the thread being pulled out of the crank

@vwnutter
@vwnutter 2 жыл бұрын
4iii, left only, just doubles your power to give total wattage. Found that it was consistently under reporting against (these) dual sided power meters. Turns out it was r/l leg imbalance. Not huge, but enough that when doubled at 300+w it was 10-20w and would diverge more as you ramped up more power. But, tbh, so long as you're using the same power meter and it's consistent which the 4iiii was then it's only really an issue if you're racing on Zwift (and then 10-20w is a lot!) Compared to Kickr and a Tacx I borrowed it was bang on, as Shane has said.

@oliverbabb9780
@oliverbabb9780 2 жыл бұрын
More accurate power. Leg inbalances can skew the power measure, and that skew can sometimes change day to day. I had a left side only and 2% power inbalance favoring my left leg, thus inflating my power numbers by 4% (doubling the 2% advantage) since I had a left side power crank. Once I got dual sided, I also discovered that my power inbalances can range from 54/46, all the way to 50/50. Therefore, my one sided in the worst case was inflating my power by 8% and was rarely a true representation of my total output. Additionally, it can also point out muscular inbalances as it did for me. More consistency, overall accuracy, easy to find muscular in-balance.

Which brand is up to you. But single/double sided. Single sided doubles the power on one crank as you're pretty much the same on each leg. Double sided will give you an exact amount. I found I can vary between 50/50 and 55/45 depending on cadence and power. That can be quite a high margin of error when you get up to 300+ watts. Instead of 150x2 you're getting 165x2 = an extra 30w. Or 30w less, depending on which leg is stronger. Coming from SPD SL to Speedplay the biggest thing was getting used to clipping in and out. Once in they are very secure.

@gplama
@gplama 2 жыл бұрын
Left only gives you an estimate of total power (left x2), to there's always the unknown factor of that number being 'correct' as you'll never know true total power output from both legs. For most people a single sided meter is fine. Some purists will disagree.

Thank you for the review! I have two bikes with pre-Wahoo Speedplay Zero pedals. Do you know if I can buy the dual sided Powrlinks and fit one pedal to each bike, effectively having one bike with a LH meter, and the other having a RH meter? Cheers Guy

I don’t believe they can be split to give two single sided meters. One for Wahoo Support to confirm.

Hi, no you can't. The right pedal broadcasts its data to the left pedal which is relayed out to your garmin/bolt etc. Might be left pedal to right... Either way, without the relay pedal it won't work.

Hi Shane, I bought the Powrlink Dual and tried different Wahoo cleats. It turns out that the protector plate hurts the power pod. The spindle is too short with heel in. I don’t use a big float, but he inside corner of this protector plate in “heel in” position rubs the power pod. It’s better with old Speedplay cleat, but it's not really satisfactory because you need to keep very little float with “heel in” position and my knees don’t like this. The interest of Speedplay pedals is then considerably reduced. Before the Powrlinks, I had bought the Assioma. The Power Pod is bigger, but with a much larger Q-Factor and so angular freedom was possible. I don’t need the 15° float, but at least 5° inwards. The product does not conform to its description at this stage. You don’t mention that design problem. Have you tried the Powrlink with with the toe slightly outward and the heel inward? Regards from France,
@gplama

They're the only Speedplay power pedal option, so they can set the price anywhere. They're cheaper than the Garmin Rally RS/RK road pedals. Infocrank have just emailed me something about a Ti power crank at €4000+ that doesn't even have Bluetooth. Now that's bold.

@@Tim_McMurray No question Assioma are cheaper. Not forgetting the Garmin Rally are more expensive. Wahoo are in a unique position of owning Speedplay, so those who want a Speedplay power meter pedal have to pay the price. Those who are happy with Look Keo (style) can go the Assioma route.

I’m really disappointed in the price. I’ve have speedplay (pre Wahoo) on all three of my bikes and I’ve been eagerly waiting for these since they were first announced last year, but £850 is too much, I want two sets but I’m not paying that much, I can get a set of Assioma Duo’s for £560, so it looks like I’m going to have to change pedal system again.
