So the NBA loses about $10 million a year to subsidize the WNBA, but it's most likely a drop in the bucket compared to what they gain. My guess is (and I'm sure internally they have metrics for this), that the WNBA opens the door to a wider audience, who may gain interest in the game of basketball and spend money on its more profitable products. One scenario may go something like this: a young girl sees a WNBA game and becomes interested in playing basketball. She buys a basketball and a jersey, joins a school team, grows to love the game, and eventually starts tuning in and buying tickets to the real show: the NBA. My guess is that the 10 million dollar loss the NBA chooses to eat is minuscule compared to the net benefit. Why else operate at a loss for nearly 30 years? It's business. It therefore may also be in the interest of the NBA to pay the WNBA players a higher percentage of revenue (no one is seriously arguing they get the same pay as men) to keep the players happy, avoid the drama, and keep the new customers flowing in.
