It's really great that you took a crack at Shantae. A lot of people take for granted how much of a struggle this series had to go through to get the popularity it has now, it's one of the many reasons I hold this series with so much respect and I'm glad you covered it so eloquently while relating it back to the character. I don't think any other video game character can take Shantae's spot as my favorite

Admittedly, this is one of the reasons I tend to support her being included in Smash. Though Shovel Knight may be considered the face of Indies, Shantae is generally not that far behind, largely due to her being one of oldest indie characters to have existed (Or at least a precursor), her long history with Nintendo consoles, and overall the struggle her franchise had to go through to get to the point where she is in terms of popularity.

Things like Sky's egg shaped earrings, Rottytops' skulls, Bolo's headband and bracers, it all fits so well to their character!

I've actually met Shantae's voice actress Cristina Vee, and I asked her how she was introduced to her role as the voice of Shantae and where it all started. I even have a video of her Q&A event from Fan Expo 2019! Now this might sound kinda cheesy or cliche or something, but it really felt like I was meeting Shantae herself in person! Now I'm not just saying that because she was literally the voice of Shantae. She had the same funny, charming, enthusiastic, lovable etc vibe as the characters she plays! Then again if you're familiar with Cristina Vee's work and the untamed talent she possesses, then I don't really need to explain much. If you ask me, having Cristina as the vocal representation of Shantae is like a match made in heaven!

For a little fun fact, Shantae's particular style of belly dancing appears to be Oryantal Dans; which, yes, originated in Turkey. It's, of course, not to be confused with Raqs Sharqui, which translates into the same thing, "Oriental Dance." Raqs Sharqui is the one that originated in Egypt, and while being more energetic and the dresses more flashy and revealing than Raqs Baladi, it still isn't as energetic as Oryantal Dans, nor the dress as flashy or revealing as the Turkish style. As for wanting to romance the green girl, all I have to say is, "Of course." Or, should I say, "Of *corpse.*" XD

Many people haven't realized this, but back when Nintendo Power was still publishing magazine articles they always have a segment where they talk about underrated games that have been published on their old systems. Shantae for GameColor got the spotlight for that segment in one of their issues. Because of that, many people who recognize the game or were vastly interested got WayForward's attention which was enough to give them one last chance to get Shantae in the green. One thing about the games that keeps me interested is that they _never_ feel old or worn out or like its "just another dungeon crawler". There is always something cool going on and the art and sound design live up to it. It's definitely one of those games that gives you that sense of urgency that we look for in video games. Got the GBC original at the store way back then. I fell in love! And now, I buy every games at release. Shantae was saved by digital distribution. No longer is a publisher mandatory for the release of a game. I'm thankful for that.

Like, even though we never see this girl with her torso fully covered, it doesn't feel like that choice was made to draw in horny gamers to drool all over her. Female characters with sexual designs & traits are usually either weak & pointless to the story or have personalities that are at odds with their design/mannerisms but Shantae has none of those problems. She does sexy dances because she likes it, she dresses how she likes to, she's tough & determined, the world doesn't fold in on itself to stop her from accomplishing anything, & she's confident & energetic enough for it to all feel consistent. It also helps that she has abilities that are triggered by her dancing so it makes sense that she's acting that way in battle. It really distinguishes her from all those female characters in other fiction who go into gun fights or sword fights barely clothed while all the men around them are in full armor. She's also not one note. She has nuance like a real person. She's able to be sexual in some ways without being sexual in all the possible ways. Normally, a female character is 1 of three things. 100% sexual all the time, romantic all the time but never sexual, or so devoid of romantic or sexual traits that she could be asexual for all anyone would know.

Shantae is actually getting one of her old sequels revived. Shantae Advance was a sequel to Shantae that was supposed to come out on the GBA, but was canned for one reason for another. But now it's getting its development finished and releasing on the Nintendo Switch.

I started knowing about this character thanks to Pirate's Curse but I never played the games, but when Half-Genie Hero came out I was having a strong need in playing the games, and good luck came to me last year and noticed that Limited Run Games was doing a port of Pirate's Curse for the Nintendo Switch so I pre-ordered it before it was gone. I played it on April or May of this year and I fell in love with the game, it's very charming and I love Shantae and the many characters I met along the way. And from that day I became a fan of the series and I beat the game, it was challenging but not unfair and it was fun. I can't wait to finish Half-Genie Hero and play the fifth game, I wanted to say thank you for sharing your thoughts on the character and because of that I'm now subscribed to your channel. 😊

I find it also interesting how her struggles technically keep happening as well. Shovel Knight released around the same time as Pirate's Curse (who Yacht Club Games were original WayForward Employees), so Shovel Knight took a big spotlight and during the Half Genie Hero Kickstarter, it was released during a major kickstarter…. Honestly though, I think despite these struggles, she seems to keep pushing forward getting a bigger and bigger audience each time, and if The Seven Sirens does well, I hope she gains even more popularity. and obligatory, I want Shantae for Smash... I hope she makes it as one of the DLC in the future.

I’m so glad i picked up half-genie hero when i did. I hadn’t really heard much about her until that game, but learning how bumpy Shantae’s past was but Wayforward pulling through anyway really is inspiring. Can’t wait for Seven Sirens.

I love the shantae series i found the series in the form of shantae and the pirates curse(it is free on xbox if u owened live gold) randomly like a year ago and it ended up becoming in my top 3 favorite games I love this series and can't wait for the 6th game:)

I found Shantae thru Risky's Revenge and fell in love. I wanted to play the original, but was floored by the cost. Fortunately, it hit the 3DS eshop too and I've played every game sinse. Easily one of my favorite series.
