I had a friend from Willits who moved to my city in the late 90's and he used to have turkey bags full of so many different kinds every harvest. They would just grow all of it and put it all together and he would go up and get some. I learned a lot about strains from that guy. Master Kush, Skunk #1, Hawaiian Skunk, trainwreck, the goo and so many different kinds of purple. Some black and peppery with whispy structure others were sweet and more green with lavender hues. I drove up there a few times to get packs. They were always all different kinds mixed together. One time I drove there see his step dad. I got an ounce off him that was all different kinds mixed together. He smoked some Lasquiti that was an amazing Sativa. He only had one plant because they grew whatever was the hot strain they could get their hands on. Since he only had the O left I met up with his friend from the area, who had divorced parents that both grew. First he took me to his moms house and she had some nice stuff. Her hash was amazing. Then we drove some long distance to his dads house and we had to wait for about an hour on the side of the road, sitting next to some bushes in the woods watching fireflies. Finally he came back. I guess his dad was well known and they had things stashed so well it took a while to get it. I got 4 oz. Once again, it was all different kinds. The only difference was, it was some of the best stuff I had ever had. There were was this one dark green and purple one that smelled like sweet sharpy pens. What i learned from it all was they always threw lots of strains in one bag. You would always get the least of the best stuff. The best stuff has crap yields and people going to Mendo for a weight were getting the stuff that yielded the most. My parents had hippy friends from Laytonville that lived on some land with their kids in some trailers. They grew the best pot I have ever smoked. It felt like my head was floating like a balloon. Anyways, harvest would always have them stop by on their way to So Cal to seed trade for the next year. This was the late eightes, maybe 88. I remember coming in from the backyard, and the wife was sitting down pulling some nugs out of a film canister. The smell immediately hit me. A stinky loud rubbery smell. I said "That smells like my Koosh ball." They said, "What is a Koosh?" I ran down to my room and grabbed it and brought back to them to let them smell it. They laughed and finished rolling the joint. Years later when I was older, they gave their daughters a joint to smoke and they blazed with me. It tasted just like the Kush and was called Big Leaf. It was a short indica. They gave my dad seeds and made lots of crosses with lots of different stuff. He had a friend in Napa who had a strain that was at F8 called the Original Cliff. He crossed that with the Big Leaf, but never grew it out. I got popped in 99 and he took his seed stash and threw the box on the side of the road on the outskirts of town in fear.

POTfreemason wow! What a great and tragic story. Thank you so much for sharing so much in detail. I grew up in Humboldt and have been around cannabis now for 27 years, as I was let into ''The Club' by a friends dad who was growing master kush etc. So many stories for me too. I had already been smoking stuff at that time that was skunky like cat piss, and some frosty sticky stuff we called carpet. And many more. I am obsessed with genetics. We've lost so many strains too. I piecing them all back together!

Over my life in Humboldt and Trinity, and having access to Mendocino stuff too I developed a nose and taste that made me very accurate on knowing where some thing was grown. The Willits, and Laytonville area has always been one of my favorite regions of cannabis. And so many other good nooks, like Burnt Ranch, Hayfork, Dinsmore and Ruth Lake, to Southern Humboldt. So amazing.

I think if they are f1 hybrids are un-worked likes, then they should be labeled as strain A x strain B. But if the breeder stabilizes it as it's own new strain, then they can name it what they want. Just my opinion

How are you defining potency? I made seeds last year and it was still Dank AF...marijuana affords us both options, you want seeds one year keep the male, you don't, kill the males, easy enough...This year, I plant my own seeds, from last year (F1's) and I'm killing the males, killed one already...I do agree, what would have been smokable biomass, is a seed instead if it's a year to make seeds. Most breeders, I think like to do both, male and female, that's my intention some day but not there yet...Great Show...Power to the Seed, the Sun and the People...❤️️👴✌️️

Okay, I know someone in Eugene who in 1998 told me he was the source of the snow. I cant tell you his name but his deadhead wife has or had a well known business there. He said it was 4 way. I never dug it that much.

The real old Durban poison, actual real cut , I could see it being in cookies. The real d poison was super sweet and dark berries ,anise like terps. Lower yield super open structure. The Durban of today is leaning on the ssh and yields way more. terpinolean heavy terps. Witch the real old school Durban didn't have.

And I believe it was mostly about profit/capitalism - reducing flowering times, shortening structure for indoor growing etc. Hell I’ve even heard commercial growers would selectively breed out the plants that smelled the best/strongest to minimise their chances of being busted 😢 I often wonder if big pharma had something to do with the huge push of the bastardisation of cannabis by buying up the few big seed banks of the 80’s and magazines like High Times, because by mixing sativa and Indica genetics together you effectively remove all the medicinal value, due to sativa and indica being almost opposite in terms of their effects (and therefore the conditions that they’re prescribed for)
