It is easy to confuse breakage and shedding (in both directions unfortunately). The dyson paddle brush creates less tension so it will pull off the already shed strands much less than the shark would (we shed 50-100 hairs per day) whereas those shed hairs will catch more in the shark so it doesn't mean that it is breaking hair. This of course does not mean it cant or wont cause breakage, but any hair tool can cause many forms of damage if not used properly. Thank you for the in-depth review. You discussed many things other people have not. I so far am team shark 🙂

The higher heat on the shark caters more towards the curly & coily haired community, which often requires temperatures over 325 degrees, and depending on the curl pattern, density, etc. some can actually require temperatures over 400 in order to achieve a sleek look. I myself won't get anywhere with something 365 degrees or less. The superior power does a much faster job of drying and styling the hair so in the long run for curly/coily hair people it's much less damaging than other traditional hair appliances that reach the same heat levels but require far more passes etc.
@femalevoice_2 жыл бұрын
@@lovestrudel1 exactly. The Dyson with this low temperature cannot tame my curly hair. I barely have frizz because I use a lot of hair care, oils, etc and it still left some. My cousin has curly hair with frizz and with the Dyson it got styled in the beautiful waves, but was left with so much frizz it didn’t look ok at all. Very true. I have both as well. Bought the Shark because I thought the Dyson price was ridiculously high. Loved it at first. After several months, my hair became so fried and thin (see through scalp became apparent) from the breakage I ended up at the dermatologist wondering what was happening. I was afraid to even gently comb my hair anymore. The Dyson saved me. The smoothing brushes are very gentle and don't yank out hair. I'm still recovering from the Shark but already noticing much less hair fallout.
@belissu Жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for the informative review. I am thinking to buy Shark but your comment got me concerned. Could you maybe specify your hair type if its dyed or thin, easy/hard to style? My hair is flat but the curls even fall down after 2-3 hours with a curling iron(160 -180 degrees)which is why I consider my hair hard to style.
@christyb9994 Жыл бұрын
Hi Cansu, my hair used to be thick with a slight wave. It's now much thinner and brittle and somewhat frizzy, still with slight bend, because I used the oval dual bristle brushes that ripped out and damaged alot of my hair. You can see just how much hair the oval bristle brushes collect that you have to clean regularly, even if it's the Revlon One Step. Honestly the Shark and Dyson are two very different systems. The only similarity is the curling barrels. They both curl about the same as a curling iron except the barrels are easier to manipulate. The Shark barrels probably do a slightly better job than the Dyson but that's because when Dyson came out with their new wands that have the button at the top and can curl both directions without switching, they had to put some sort of double sleeve in the barrel which makes it slightly less effective. I actually bought the new Dyson system but ordered the old style barrels and it's more similar to the Shark barrels that you have to switch out. That said, if your curls don't hold with a curling iron, I'm not sure they'll hold with either of these barrels. Except that your hair will be healthier with either of these barrels as opposed to if you used a curling iron. And as the curls loosen and drop, they leave a beautiful wave and style behind. Regarding the brushes, I can't use the Shark oval dual bristle brush at all. It's too rough and pulls out too much hair as I mentioned above with all dual bristle brushes, not just Shark. The Dyson smoothing brushes are much better for my fragile hair type. They don't rely on tension to smooth hair as the coanda effect sucks the hair to the brush and keeps it there as you dry. So I lose very little hair after drying with the Dyson smoothing brushes. Maybe one or two hairs left behind in the brush if any at all. I personally use the Dyson for frizz control, smoothing and styling. Again, this is just my experience. If you already have smooth hair, and all you want are coanda effect barrels, and you don't mind the dual bristle brushes tugging on your hair, then the Shark might work better? I don't know. But watch alot of videos because either system is very expensive.

Can you elaborate how heat damage is objectively measured on the hair? Or at least on your hair? Do you know how hot the dyson gets (in Fahrenheit etc) vs the shark? Why do you take Dyson’s statement of “no heat damage” at face value but don’t believe the Shark claim? Are there some studies that Dyson has done? Just curious on your why you recommended it for lesser heat damage because it’s a lofty claim by Dyson… And it sounds like they want us to believe it because it Carries a higher price tag.

I have both and agree with everything you said. I noticed my hair sucked up much quicker and tighter on the Shark, however I'm all about hair health and did not like how hot the Shark got. I asked Shark on FB what the temp of the lowest heat setting was and they said 130 F, which seems really low! They did not share what the high heat temperature was though. I do have to use the highest heat setting whereas with the Dyson, I use the lowest. My biggest complaint is where the control buttons are on the very bottom base of the Shark. You need two hands to shut it off which is very inconvenient. In the end, I prefer the Dyson but am keeping the Shark as well, mostly for the way I can do beach curls with it upside down since it bends in half. With my carpal tunnel, it's much easier than doing that style with the Dyson.

I don’t have the dyson to compare but my biggest gripe right now is that while the curls are lovely, THEY FALL SO FAST! I cannot figure out how to make my style last! I never have this issue with an iron so I’m really sort of bummed about that. I’ve only messed around with it about 5 times so maybe it’s just trial and error to find what works. I've been thinking about buying a new one but don't want to shell out another $600. It would be perfect to buy the Shark for less and be able to use my Dyson long barrel attachments.

@@kristiebraun5204 omg my shark just arrived literally minutes ago. YES THE LONG BARREL FITS IN THE SHARK! the other brushes do not though, and the fly away attachment doesn’t fit. Only the thick and skinny barrel!!

@@kristiebraun5204 I was at Nordstrom when I first found out they fit, cause I hate how short the shark ones are and it took me a few months to think about it and I finally ordered it. I am sooo happy I finally bought the shark omg. My Dyson also stopped working and it’s complete crap I hate the Dyson machine lol but I like the barrels

Great & helpful video! For those who have been using the Shark Flexstyle curling tool for a while now, do you get any split ends?

the temperature differences. The shark reaches about 180. A Dyson is around 157 on the high setting.

I was about to buy the dyson (regular size)but they are always out of stock and shark came out with the flex style and I thought why not buy at a better price. So I ordered like a week ago and still waiting… I don’t like their shipping policy, it’s taking forever to get it delivered. I don’t know why some people get it within few days and for some it’s takes almost a month. Hopefully mine comes soon. 1 month is too long.

Based off my conversation with customer service a couple of days ago it’s likely because it was a “pre-order” so it’ll take 30-45 days. I wish that had been more clear when I placed my order because I wasn’t aware. I would keep my eye on the best buy website and check when locations near your are getting a shipment. The ones near me show availability next week. I ended up cancelling my order with shark (they did however offer a discount code so that I wouldn’t cancel) and should be getting it this week. Of course, this is if you’re in the US and not UK. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the review. Is there one that is louder than the other? I bought a shark hair dryer at Costco and it was so loud and high pitched I had to return it. Was wondering if these tools would be as loud?

I'm curious to know if you noticed a difference in the longevity of your curls? Did the Shark curls last longer than the Dyson's?
@anelisajohnson11202 жыл бұрын
I think the shark is longer since it's hotter(makes sense).. but I feel like the most important step is actually how you prep the hair before you style it
@sophiewilliams39632 жыл бұрын
@@anelisajohnson1120 can i ask how you prep and what products you use.ive wanted the airwrap for ages but can't afford but have damage from GHD Air dryer and straighteners. I'm desparate for change but worried the shark is more damaging. 🤔
@anelisajohnson11202 жыл бұрын
@@sophiewilliams3963 Im sure its not that bad, if u cant afford it dyson, sure there might be some damage from shark but if u use heat protectant and take care of your hair regulary it shouldnt be a major damage. But for styling the salt spray or hair mousse, keeps the curls longer
@debbie262610 ай бұрын
I'm returning my shark because the only thing i get from it is tilted upwards ends and i definitely dont like the look. Curls last 10 minutes and i have already weavy hair that generally hold curls very well, I tried different hair products to help the curls but nothing worked so... bye
