The Sharkbanz Team, in association with Discovery Canada and Sharkdefense Technologies, LLC., conducted a comparative study with Sharkbanz products on wild bull sharks in Bimini, Bahamas. The bull shark is responsible for a substantial number of attacks in the USA and globally. The team’s goal was to test the hypothesis that Sharkbanz technology creates an effective barrier and deterrent, thus reducing bull shark attacks even under the most extreme test scenarios.
Methods
Between 5 and 15 bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) were present during the experimental trials. The study consisted of trials that simulated a worst case scenario. Each trial was conducted with the experimental treatment (i.e. Sharkbanz or Sharkleash), and then replicated exactly with the control (i.e. no Sharkbanz). Bait chunks (Bonita, Sarda sarda) were intermittently distributed around the human model (i.e. Bernie) to continuously stimulate and attract the sharks to interact with the treatment and control. During all trials bait chunks (approximately 300 g) were placed into the human model at the foot (i.e. inside the sock) to attract the sharks to bite. Various treatments were tested including control (i.e. no Sharkbanz or Sharkleash), Sharkbanz, or Sharkleash.
Results
A total of 25 trials were conducted with the treatments (i.e. Sharkbanz and Sharkleash) and control resulting in 2 hr 38 min of soak time exposed to the bull sharks with a total of 1235 approaches and observed behaviors. During the 2 hr 19 min with the treatment, there were zero attacks on the human model. Trials with the control were stopped once the human model was attacked. During the 18 minutes of trials with the control, the human model was attacked approximately every 46 seconds.
Conclusion
The current preliminary study is the first conclusive comparative study demonstrating the effectiveness of Sharkbanz products against bull sharks. The results suggest that wearing a Sharkbanz or using a Sharkleash significantly reduces the probability of bull shark interactions (i.e. attack or bite as defined in the experiment) in a similar situation where a human leg is suspended in the water column from a floating object (like a surf board). Although the current study does not meet all of the demands of a rigorous scientific study, and contains temporal variation between control and treatment trials, and not all trials were identical, the data clearly demonstrated overwhelming evidence that the magnetic technology applied in the Sharkbanz products created an effective deterrent to bull sharks even when enticed to feed. In fact, variation in the experimental trials were intended to explore the limits of the effectiveness and as such only resulted in more compelling evidence of the Sharkbanz effectiveness. Future rigorous studies are planned for 2018 that meet the demands of a rigorous scientific study and will be submitted for peer review. The data from this study is currently being reviewed by an independent researcher and conforms with results from other peer reviewed scientific publications on the effects of very strong permanent magnets on shark behavior, (O’Connell et al., 2010; 2011a; 2011b), and more recently relative to bull sharks (O’Connell et al., 2014).

The site of the attack is irrelevant. An attack is an attack. In terms of the real world, there was a case where a group of people were attacked. The only person who wasn't was wearing one of the bands. It's not coincidence. Sharks are very sensitive to electromagnetism and the magnet in the band creates a strong electromagnetic field that disturbs their receptors, so they're less likely to show interest. Like a seatbelt, obviously you can't guarantee 100% safety, that's just an unrealistic assumption. It *reduces* the chances. And no I don't work for them. Look it up for yourself about sharks and electromagnetism. It's just science. I'd much rather be on the safer side than question it just because they attached the bait to a dummy instead of a human being.

I appreciate sharkban getting involved in the comments, makes me feel more comfortable. I wish other companies would do the same. IMO, the cost of sharbanz is quite low compared to the costs of medical treatments and sewing your fingers back on and so it pays the have some protection. The risk is too big to not have some defence against sharks IMO and we all know that sharks travel along the coastline.. I will buy one this week

Seems very effective. But what about all the sharks out there that are out to get just ME , personally? They're out there, you know. I think the sharks invented the basking shark as *a suit* , just so they could get closer to me here in the cold Swedish waters. They just put on a basking suit and then they can patrol, looking for me. That's why the basking shark has its mouth open all the time. It's not feeding, the shark inside needs to see out. It's like a space suit for sharks.

very similar to the theory of the lemon sharks true self. so many people think it is just a normal shark, but this is not the case. with new developments in technology and research, the conclusion is obvious. rogue lemons from a farm used similar shark suits to find people who ate their lemon friends. the shark suits are very realistic and can be dangerous, and the lemons know this full well.

It already does the entire human body. Sharks are super sensitive to electromagnetism so if there's a band on a person's leg they'll detect it regardless of where the person is facing. The range of the first band is about 5-6 metres. The follow up has been enhanced further and covers an even larger distance. Unless there's someone out there taller than 20 feet, it doesn't matter where it is on their body.

This is a great advancement no doubt in shark deterrent tech. Though I think more tests need to be done on the most dangerous species however, especially great whites which are the smartest apparently that "share" information in groups with recent research out, also tiger sharks, bull sharks, white tip sharks, black tip sharks etc. Also tests done at different depths (eg surface swimmer vs diver depths vs sea-bottom) and ideally at different angles to cover the different types of shark attacks. For example maybe put a test dummy on a dive line at different depths with some bait attached to it with the sharkbanz to test. You could rig this up in different known shark locations (whilst wearing a sharkbanz! :-). Also is the magnet strength in these affected by any external sources? What is the expected life of these bands whilst effective? Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work! Cheers

OK, I found the answer on your website, thank you for posting: www.sharkbanz.com/pages/things-to-know Similar to other safety devices, the greater the coverage, the greater the protection. One Sharkbanz will help you reduce the risk, but the electromagnetic field generated by one Sharkbanz does not act as a full-body force field. If you are in particularly shark populated areas (such as Florida, California, Hawaii, North Carolina, Australia and other areas of the Pacific) and spending a lot of time in the ocean, then we recommend wearing multiple Sharkbanz - and suggest one on your wrist and one on your ankle. It's one of the reasons we made them so affordable.

pearl rival saw it as well. You see, the young surfer jumped off a boat to catch a nice sized wave and got insanely unlucky because he landed straight on top of a bull shark coming up to skim the surface. The bull shark was probably attacking out of self defense rather than aggressively. I personally don’t think these work as well as advertised but it should, in fact, make the small chance of getting attacked by a shark just a bit smaller for you.

And for those giving unrealistic suggestions like going into shark alley, or swimming on seal island, just stop. This is intended to help against most shark attacks. Most shark attacks don't involve a giant great white coming at you from below at 30mph. Of course that won't repel it, or if it does, that thing is moving too fast to stop in time. But I would be willing to bet that a great white would be repelled if it's simply passing by to check you out.

Very interested in your product, however I am also very skeptical of online video promotions as I am sure many other potential buyers are too. Could you possibly organise to do a live demonstration in front of an audience at an aquarium? That would definitely result in potential buyers having more confidence in the effectiveness of your product.

We would be happy to, but you can't test Sharkbanz in an aquarium because the sharks' sensory organs are dulled by overstimulation from the pumps in the tanks.

Funny thing is, a 2018 study by Flinders uni, with great whites proved this band to be ineffective. Indeed the only electromagnetic deterant that worked only worked 60% of the time. This "test" isn't, it's hilarious.

Swim across shark alley in South Africa with one attached to you, then that would give significant reassurance in your product. You can’t expect people to buy it when you test on dummies and not real people lol

What a stupid comment. So many products...including major technological milestones have been tested in similar fashion....kind of why the word "test dummy" exists, why we didnt just toss people into space for giggles....get the hint?

@@rickworthington3062 this isn’t putting someone in space idiot. Bullet proof vests are tested by their owners to prove they work. No different with this. It would increase sales and revenue. If they are worried about doing it maybe the product isn’t that great. End of.

@@hwm2024 it does work though, its a good test, couple hundred bucks and we take chances going into the water. notice they put on the left and right side. i think 2 really boosts the effect and creates more of a magnetic barrier as a complete 360 around the prey. i had some close encounters i dont know how many more times i can cross a great white and not get lit up. im getting 2 today. if it works it works if it doesnt well at least i tried.

Next time, you should replace the dummy with a live human in the same exact situation to test it for real. In the videos where you used a real human, there were tiny sharks and far fewer of them. If you really believe in your product, you would be willing to take the place of the dummy in this video. Until that happens, I don't recommend anyone use this product.
