Don’t know how you found out about my story, and that’s all fairly accurate (50 feet offshore)…. The hypothesis is it was a silky shark, related to blacktips and whitetip sharks (larger cousins…) It is thought that this guy was seen the next day in about a foot of water a half mile north, literally a foot from shoreline. Hundreds of stitches, three operations. and a miracle worker hand surgeon named Dr. Frank Murphy got me more or less back in the game after a 15 year old Bridges boy drove me in a golf cart to the police station near the beach. Day before my 20th birthday….eventful… 😉

Bullsharks 100% can live in fresh water, 1974 the Brisbane river flooded over 2 weirs, bullsharks got above the weirs the water level dropped and trapped a large number of bullsharks in the fresh water. They are still there, I have caught several 8ft plus sharks there as well as 2 ft juveniles which would show they are breeding in the freshwater. The river flooded again in 2011 and the sharks had a chance to escape but they stayed.

Love the Channel. I have lived in coastal N.C. right on the intercoastal waterway now for 50+ years. When i was young in the seventies i would go gill net fishing with dad and granddad. We would catch little Bull and HammerHead sharks. I remember my granddad telling me "Where there are little ones, There are BIG ones". I never went in the water over my knee since that day.
@ghostwriter1415
@ghostwriter1415 Жыл бұрын
@craigstarling4704, I'm sure you're familiar with clam-stomping? You wear thin, plastic boot's (or socks), and march from waist, to chest deep water, and when you feel a climb under you're foot, you go under, dig him up, and drop him in a basket that's fastened to an inner tube. Often time the water is muddy, and there's dolphins within ten feet. Long story short: I wound up talking to this old Islander (that means a native of Harkers Island), and he was telling me about the time he was pound netting, and got trapped in the net with a ten foot bull shark! He was able to grab the shark by the gills, but he still wound up with what looked like 3rd degree burns from where the shark was slapping him in the chest & face. He was able to kill the shark with a knife, but what is spooky is he and a buddy went back a couple of hours later, to the exact spot, to try and find the shark, and all they found was the head! The body had been bitten off by something even larger! That was the last time (2002) I, or any one in my family ever went in the water without a boat. And, when you think about the woman that got killed by a Great White in 2020, way up in the state of Maine, right off of her boat dock, during the cold season, you never know. The Islander may have been getting stalked by a Great White, or a Tiger. Sorry for rambling, and take care. From Craven County NC, ghost

As to your bullsharks not surviving in fresh water what do you think about the sharks found in lakes in Washington and Michigan, or the shark attacks in that river in New Jersey that inspired the film Jaws?
@rottweilerfun9520

There were no sharks found in lakes in Michigan. There were a couple of hoaxes and urban legends though. That water is way too cold for bullsharks.

Hmm I debate you on the sharks/fresh water situation. It has been confirmed via DNA that the species of shark to kill Stella in the Swan River AU was a bull shark. That river can be freshwater or saltwater depending on the season. And rivers here are known to be where bull sharks go to give birth, the baby sharks stay for about 5 years until it’s safe for them to leave again.

I live right beside UNCW, just about 5 miles from Wrightsville Beach, and I remember when this accident happened. Mr. Nunnally was a teacher at one of the local high schools. I read the articles about it in the newspaper. I just now decided to look up the shark attack file report, and a very dear family friend was interviewed for the article. He is an EMT and dives for them, too. He wasn’t there when they recovered the body, but he said there had been multiple bites at the beaches here, and they were never reported to the media. And how many times has Hal said this??

@@tiabeaniesemotionalsupportdmon Which is why it surprised me Hal put this down as a scavenger. Occums razer says the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. If he was an experienced diver I'd assume this was a tiger shark attack and the body just drifted afterwards. I don't see the distance from where the person was last seen has any bearing on whether it was a shark attack or not. Surely that's more to do with local currents. Poor guy, anyway. Wonder if that same shark was responsible for eating Vladimir Popov. Tiger sharks are terrifying, they're generally as big as great whites, and once they've got a hold of your arm or leg, you aren't seeing that limb ever again. Their teeth are serated and their bite force comes from both jaws, unlike great whites that use the bottom jaw for grip and the top for chomping down.

Hey, Hal, I Love the channel and wish you much continued success. With all due respect, in regards to Douglas Gray Nunnally, who perished in Carolina Beach, NC., I don't feel 6 miles in 3 days is all that far for the ocean's current to take the remains of a body. I could be wrong, but in my opinion, I just don't find it implausible. He could've been killed by a shark (bled out and later scavenged upon), or predated by one from the get-go. Either way, I feel it's fool hardy to go scuba diving on your own. Most experienced divers would agree, as anything can happen that could put your life at risk, and it doesn't necessarily have to be shark related.

I agree 100%… I live about 5 miles inland from Wrightsville Beach. Lived here almost all my life (except for 9 years of my childhood spent in St. Pete, Fl), and those currents we have here can be SUPER swift! Mr. Nunnally was a well-loved teacher at one of the local high schools here. I remember when he died. It was quite sad. We don’t usually have fatal attacks here, but when you go out diving alone, you are more at risk of attack, and if that does occur, no one will ever really know exactly what happened to you. An unfortunate and fatal decision for him. You wouldn’t catch me doing that… No sir!!

So is the salt it entered with. You ate already on the net, look into things like how salt goes away on its own from water because it does not decrease without enough rainwaters to slowly overtake and dilute the salt.

@@SharksHappen Interesting eh? Maybe someone adds salt lol That sounds so stupid. Haha Am I taking about the local fish n chip shop now! But they are said to be breeding 🤷‍♀️ You are the expert. I’m just a pleb who heard about the sharks & the golf course once on the nightly News with the video footage. Sharks are alive & apparently happy enough to have babies. That’s it for my expertise or lack thereof 🤷‍♀️

I highly recommend watching the video that Hal linked about the divers in the cage. It was a lot worse than I imagined and it's all on film. The cage looked strong, but it might as well been cardboard against the raw power of the shark.

Presuming they haven't lost the limb, are peoples hands / feet degloved as they tear the appendage out of the mouth, or just huge lacerations? I'm only asking as I don't recall hearing it happen. Marsa Alam has lots of reefs and a nearby shipwreck too. As much as I'd want to jump in, I'd go look for a pool... any pool! Cheers 😁

Do you think Jeremy Wade is lying about catching those Bull Shark's in those River's?
@SharksHappen
@SharksHappen Жыл бұрын
No, i know he is lying when he says where it was caught was even close to fresh water. Plenty of articles on saltwater intrusion on the breede and where he caught it is pure seawater twice a day with tides and never close to fresh. The water looks so clear at the top during his show due to the releasing of the dam to try to make water 25 miles up stream usable for their needs. I will never watch the liar again. If you are going to claim something is fresh water, and you are an actual scientist you should at least research the water you are claiming is fresh. Plenty says the lower breede should no longer be consider fresh water at all

Some species must stay on the move to breathe. Others hole up in caves in groups to rest. Depends on the species and little is known about others. They tend to be more active at night or in murky water. They do have pupping areas they return to.
