@@jalilullahIshaqzai You're objectively wrong, first of all it wasn’t najib ud daula who requested abdali to come to India, it was shah waliullah who requested abdali to come to defeat Maratha empire not because of atrocities on Muslims but simply because the Mughal empire was weak and shah waliullah supported the Mughal empire, second no, sadashiv rao was only one faction of the Maratha empire, abdali only fought one faction and he had already much trouble, now imagine if 2-3 factions of the Maratha empire were present abdali personally would have been killed. The only mistake from the Maratha side was that there was no unity between the peshwas/factions.

I had hear about this sambhar story but now it is confirmed 😀…..interesting to note during early 80s in my native place..Kolhapur…the similar preparation was called Sambhar and during my later years I used to wonder what could be connection between that sambhar and today’s world famous sambhar…. Confusion settled. Coming back to Mr Tharoor’s point. He is very much right. Think of important Maratha Sardar spread over most parts of India….Thanjavur, most parts of North Karnataka, Indore, Dewas, Baroda, Gwalior, Jhansi in addition to Maharashtra. Now a days I am observing some kind of increased discussion about valorous stories of Maratha empire. Be it movies like Panipat, Bajirao Mastani, Farzand,, Tanahaji, Ghodkind and many more or many KZbinrs talking about it notably Abhijit Chawada. Maratha history is all about Hindavi Swaraj inclusive of all castes, creeds and religions. Even many Muslims were given important responsibilities in the whole scheme of things. Chhatrapati Shivaji maharaj, initiated the idea of …Janatech rajya ….roughly translated to Peoples kingdom and was built on by subsequent generations. Here is afghan history perspective on 3rd battle of panipat. Abdali left kandahar to punish the sikh however on the way he received a message that maratha were attacking delhi and caused a mass murder of rohillah pashtuns in rohilla, when abdali intercepted a maratha letter to Pune it stated that their final target is kandahar upon hearing that abdali changed course to eliminate the maratha threat before they make it to attock, multan or punjab. abdali had small force sufficient to deal with the divided sikh not an empires army so he used his experience to encircle the maratha and eventually wipe them out of panipath and delhi the rest is history

Maratha Empire was surrounded by Aghanistan in the West, Bengal in the East, Deccan and Mysore in South, Awadh in the north along with its belligerent Rohilla allies, and titular (though ineffective) Delhi in the center. He attacked and eliminated that threat and went back. Marathas ruled the North through the Emperor because they were not accepted as rightful rulers of Hindusthan by the proud Rajputs. Even the South did not really accept them. We saw the rise of Tipu Sultan and the Sikh Empire. Marathas showed excellent military prowess and acumen for some time but could not sustain it especially as they did not try build alliances with these kingdoms instead chose to ally with the British against Tipu Sultan and gave the Britishers a chance to get a foothold in the South. Remember also the Bhima Koregaon battle where the Britishers were able to get the support of the Dalits against the Peshwa. The Dalits were being ill treated and thus the lack of unity among Indians. The fact is the caste system actually creates mistrust among Indians and allows foreigners to take advantage

That is what I meant when I said that the Marathas were unable to create alliances that are necessary in a diverse country like India to make the Empire last longer. Also, Tipu Sultan lost one battle with the Marathas because instead of cooperating with him, Tipu Sultan had to fight them and the Nizam and the British in three different fronts. And it was not the Marathas who defeated Tipu Sultan, it was the British who had to call Lord Cornwallis from the American War of Independence to fight Tipu Sultan. If the Marathas had formed an alliance with Tipu and Nizam and the Sikh, the British would have found it difficult to penetrate India. Then we could have been really a united India.

After conquering most of India, it would not be a difficult to conquer small coastal states who had their backs against them, they simply had to accept their status as a tributary state and avoid being conquered.
