I am watching this video for the second time. It's another boring day down here in northwest Georgia. I wish I could spend my day with Shawn James but he lives a couple thousand miles away so that is not possible. So I will just sit here and watch his videos over and over.

Thanks for watching. FYI, I am not a mushroom expert and only harvest and eat mushrooms that I can 100% identify as safe for human consumption. If you are interested in wild foraging, please consult with an expert and/or attend a foraging workshop. One KZbin channel worth watching for more information is kzbin.info.

Hi Shawn. I'm new to your channel. Found you by accident yesterday. .and I can't get enough watching what you're doing. Love the mushrooms. I've never harvested but I bet you could find truffles in that area. Yum. Be careful. In a past video, you mentioned insects and how bothersome they were to your wife. My daughter is allergic to misquitos and I wouldn't use harsh chemicals on her when she was young, but someone passed on to me that the orginal scented SKIN-SO-SOFT from Avon repels misquitos. I used it on my daughter for years and now she is 31 and still uses it seasonally and on her children too. Not one misquito bite when she wears it. We ordered the biggest bottle and it keeps forever. And you smell good. Oil scented candles repels flies---I've found the citronella candles do not work to repel anything. Just sharing tips for your wife's comfort. But i would use (some) of that bear fat, beeswax and spruce tips to make candles. Ty for sharing.

Many years ago a friend and I hit a bumper crop of chanterelles in the Olympic Mts. WA state and filled up 4 backpacks easily and could've gotten more but we grew too tired and it was rainy, wet, slippery. I picked many and passed them around to family and friends in a 250 mile radius. Everyone was happy! Great eating. Cali in the water hole; sweetest thing ever! Enjoying your videos, lovely garden. Shawn, so far you have been focusing on foraging, self reliance through hunting, fishing, growing your own food; burning, heating and cooking using materials available from around your cabin. These are the obvious foundation and resources to live off. My opinion is that there would be added protection and long term assurance if you also stock up salt, sugar, coffee, flours, pasta, rice, grains, beans, freeze dried food etc (storing in bulk in Mylar bags that last for 20 , 30 years) and essential supplies. I would think that some storable canisters of butane or propane that allow indoor/outdoor cooking on portable stove and heating (like Little Buddy) still come handy as immediate back up, for emergencies and alternatives in unforeseen circumstances. Other situations to factor in and plan ahead are physical limitations with possible sickness and aging. It would be tough to go up and down the loft daily. My very best wishes that you enjoy your life and the fruits of your hard work in many decades to come!

If you need larger stone for a project, I'd bet some of your neighbors have a stone pile that sits untouched. In farm country that is usually the case, especially in those areas where stone is prolific. I live at the edge of the ice age glacial till and every farmer spent hours clearing unwanted rock from fields and pastures. When I underpinned my basement, I was able to forage rock in any dimension to add to the new poured wall. Just a suggestion, my friend. I like your new root cellar. Thanks for posting!

We absolutely love living here where my wife and I are both born and raised. Here in NW Montana. Especially with the way the world is today. We are 5 miles from the Canadian border. Back in Our little town, Eureka, you don’t see many folks wearing mask. Folks despise them. And no one around here locked down back when so many was Nationwide. Our closet neighbor is across the state line over in Idaho. 8 miles. And it’s so good to have all 4 of our boys here close by living on the land they grew up on. I was raised here in a logging / sawmill family. Today, all the boys and there wives run everything. I go to our office which is here on our land, right about 678 acres away, put in about 5 to 6 hours a day. I have read so many comments online and so is my wife on her iPad out of people living in large cities, and listening to them how they live is just absolutely tragic. It’s sad. And so many live in fear, fear about being broke in on. My Lord. What so many of these people don’t even own a pistol. Two side arms stay in my pickup, and a shotgun and a rifle in my gun rack in my Pickup. I just don’t understand people that are scared living in the city yet they won’t even own a pistol. It makes no sense to me.

Glad you got a bunch of those yummy fungi! I usually go for Boletus Edulis around here, but this year was strange. Every patch I found was just riddled with some sort of larvae, even the youngest specimens. The purple spored puffballs usually in profusion were also mighty scarce as well. I always found it amazing the difference just a couple hundred km could have on weather. Some years the Great Lakes funnel the rainy weather north, sometimes south, and sometimes it splits the difference. This year was our drought year.

Shaun, I’ve watched your videos since you first left the city and began your cabin. I’m impressed with your learned skill in construction. What I want to say is keep seeking your dreams, whatever they are. A suggestion though, if you don’t mind... in reference to pulling your winter sled, get a fat leather belt 5”-7” wide and hook the rope to each end, better yet, hook two ropes to the belt, one above the other on each end. Use this to pull the sled, by stepping inside and placing the leather band across your stomach or hips. This’ll free-up your arms and provide more power in pulling. Just a suggestion. You’re doing a great thing. In reference to the present situation in the world, with the plandemic, food shortages and economy, etc. you’re doing the right thing. I hope your wife and daughters will eventually understand and decide to join you. May the Lord continue to bless you. - George Spencer P.S.- I just had an additional thought: on each side, an arms length behind you, make a loop (a bite) on the rope heading to the sled, so if you want to, you can still grab the rope behind to use your arm strength as well. 😀 ok, additional: put a good sized hand loop at the end of the leather-strap so you can put the strap up on your chest and use your two hands at each end of the strap to help with an extra pull of your arms and lats and shoulder muscles.

Hi George. I was thinking something similar when I saw Shawn struggling with moving large heavy logs, which he eventually put the leading end in a plastic toboggan/skid (?) so the end wouldn't dig into the snow or into the dirt as he is dragging it along. I've seen Shawn work with sheet metal before and I was thinking he could fashion a slider a curler might use on their shoe or a metal fixture that a pirate that has lost his leg below the knee would put over his leg stub. The metal would stand up much better than the thin plastic. Perhaps fashion the metal to a point so it slides easily past the trees with an upturn so it doesn't dig into the snow/dirt. Kind of a cone with the seam riding on the top so it doesn't act as a dirt plow. Just a thought.

Mushrooms, what a terrific season presently. Not always such an abundant season. Good idea to dry for later when the years are more lean. I've read two versions of proliferation of mushrooms. 1 ) leave some in place to drop their spores and grow next season. 2 ) while the mushroom is in the ground, cut stem to remove mushroom. Leave stem in ground as it has fine strands in the ground that connects it to other mushrooms and its natural trees it belongs to. I don't know which is correct but I like both ideas, so I tend to do both.

A good tip I was given by an old Czech mushroom hunter is when they found mushrooms that were past their best, they would pick them and put them high up in the trees as they walked along so that the spores would spread further and make more mushrooms for next year. So If you see a large squishy mushroom spiked onto a branch in the woods , you know why. More for everyone he said! Lightly fried in butter with Parsley and Garlick on toast. A meal fit for a king. (if I haven't eaten it first)

Yes, if you are harvesting all mushrooms from your nearby area, in subsequent years it be will hard to find mushrooms near your locality
@МихаилРодной-п8б4 жыл бұрын
Actually, you do more harm this way - they do not regenerate, leftovers only decaying and it spreads to the roots. Much more effective just to leave those too old so spores (microscopic seeds) can spread around and grow into new root system (often extends doesen or more yards around below ground surface). Mushrooms only a "fruit" above the ground. It's like an apple doesn't grow back if you left piece of it hanging on the tree.
@МихаилРодной-п8б4 жыл бұрын
Best way to pick mushrooms - just twist them around from their "nest" and clean the dirt afterwards with knife like potato.
