My wife and I always dreamed of building our own log cabin. Because of work responsibilities we were never able to build one (we did buy one) but we did many smaller projects-little outbuildings, furniture, decks, etc.-and plenty of repairs over the years. I’m sixty seven now, retired, and lost my wife to a heart condition last year and I suffer from stage 4 renal cell carcinoma. The cancer destroyed my humerus in both arms and now limits my ability to do much of anything, since the titanium rods are secured to damaged shoulder and lower arm bones. The point of all that is to say that as I watch you work and listen to you talk about your worldview and lifestyle I vicariously remember the projects she and I did together. You are a remarkable man. I admire your work ethic and what you have and continue to produce. Though I will likely never meet you, I feel as though you are a friend in spirit and I thank you for transporting me to a beautiful place and to distant memories. Stay safe and my best to your wife and daughters.

These videos could have made an excellent video for those in high school physics classes as a real world example of how to use your physics in everyday life. The mechanical advantage gained by the pulleys, the use of levers, identifying the fulcrum, all great stuff! It would be a lot more motivating than most videos shown in schools.

It takes a real man to admit his mistakes and a real carpenter to know how to fix his mistakes. We all make mistakes and anyone who says they don't usually is a man that don't do much none of us are perfect. Thank you for what you are allowing us to watch . I know it's difficult when you have to go through the extra pains of fixing things like this but that also is a good sign of a good carpenter. I know from experience that it will bother you until you make it write. I tell myself there are better days ahead when I face these kinds of problems. Still doesn't make it any easier . Head down dig in and just do it has always been the answer. Bless you my brother for your honesty and integrity. Not a lot of it out there these days

That is some tricky work for sure, the sheer size and weight of that log after it leaves it`s resting place and swings, there is no stopping it, it is going where gravity takes it, I`m glad for you that the logs are getting smaller and lighter, now i`m not so worried about the cable system. The engineering alone is most impressive.I tell my wife I`m watching my friend Shawn James build his dream cabin alone in the woods, like we have met or something. We all thank you for sharing, be safe.

I really enjoy watching you accomplish the impossible. I remember studying in school about the principles involved in using pulleys to help do the work. I was doubtful then but now I am a believer. It is amazing to watch you move those tremendous logs around so easily. I do want to mention that there is a tree on the right side of the screen - I think the cable is attached to it but can't be sure (the light was not good today.) Anyway, it looked like it was moving. Indicating that the roots are loose. I don't mean to be an alarmist but perhaps you could just check it out. It would only take a moment but prevent a problem. I hope that I am wrong. Anyway, I'll see you on the next video.

Holy smokes this is a project ! And it’s getting done in one man’s time , no rushing . The hardest part is almost over. . I wish you good health so you can continue to do what you love . If I lived close I d come give ya a hand for sure . It’s a funny thing when I was growing up my father would make me watch him build and wasn’t allowed to do much except watch and hand tools and be a gopher . Then one day in my teens I just started fixing and building . The thing that helped most knowing what tools to use and what for and keeping everything plumb and square . Now I can build anything . Tables , cabinets . Baird brothers in Canfield Ohio has the nicest quality wood to work with I’ve seen . Them boys are top notch .

The heavy lifting and not enough space are two of the challenges I have faced over the past couple of years. One of the reasons I was looking for a Tractor (with forks). Amazingly a friend of mine seeing my need offered me a deal that I couldn't refuse. I am now the proud owner of a 1980 Massey Ferguson 30E Perkins diesel tractor. I took it to the property last month (750 miles away) . Now I wish I had two tractors since I just started on the final push to finish the Timbers for the cabin! One for the shop here and one for the property there. Hahaha You're doing fine Shawn. You are a total inspiration to me for what I'm doing in Arizona. You're going to hate me but I just got "On-Grid" power on our last trip. I've been using a generator for the past five years which ran everything from the power tools to the Travel Trailer. Finally got power which I will need for my Blacksmith shop which will be after the cabin is finished. Off-grid is fine but it is challenging. I've had mixed results with solar. It never could keep up with demand. Good luck. Love the Log design and look.

You really give me hope and encouragement to tackle jobs that I do not think I would try by myself. Of course nothing dangerous, as moving huge logs, but the idea of not giving up like this last video of yours. Showing that there is always a solution to something. This cabin you are building is really starting to take shape. Are you plans for the roof where you burned the logs the same for this cabin? Wow - what a lot of work to swing the log around. I watch you nearly every episode and marvel but frankly, even though I'm seeing how you do it, I just don't know you do it! Does that make sense? Anyway, you were right to fix it rather than maybe regretting it down the line when the entire cabin is finished and the logs would start to go out of whack - then you'd be kicking yourself for not having corrected the error when you had the chance. If more people acknowledged they made a mistake and need to fix it rather than just trying to slide by it, I think the world would be a much better place in so many aspects! Watching you while I was finishing up putting 600 lights on the Christmas tree and feeling sorry for myself (boo hoo hoo) for not having bought a pre-lit tree showed me straight off how silly I was. Thanks - I needed that!

It's likely that they will last and remain steady for a very long time. Nothing is boring about what you teach, it's entertainment and education both. Could we wish for more?

It is not boring Shawn , interesting how things have to be done in order to make plumb square level. When I was working for someone else I preached it daily

Awesome job Shawn your doing great considering your working in those outside elements. Your a beast working by yourself and lifting those humungus logs the way you do. And by the way your videos are not boring I believe your teaching someone else building a log cabin some new tricks. Keep doing what ur doing cause Iove it, and thanks for sharing your contents. God Bless You and be safe...🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍💪💪💯💯💯💯

I like the improvements I see in your building technique. Pulleys! I bet no one can lift these logs by hand alone. haha! Also i like the way you carve the logs in a moon crescent shape. This is traditional way of doing log cabins in Finland and i bet this will be a warmer cabin than your previous one. Now days we use flax insulation strips between the logs instead of moss. If its not too late, remember to put insulation between the openings and opening window/door frames. These opening will be the weakest in terms of insulation. Most skilled chainsaw carvers can carve the logs so accurately, that they can use thin rubber sealant strips that they use to make doors and windows airtight. They use them between the logs on the inside and outside. If you are accurate enough, you can make the log wall pass passive house regulations and be very airtight but still open for water vapor, which is a must in these climates. Only thing i wonder is your foundation. I think that will be the first one to go in your cabin. I would not use wood underground. In fact the higher you get your first log off the ground the better. With stone foundation and proper roof, this log cabin will last +200 years. I've taken down and inspected old log cabins. The lower 2 logs are always the logs that rot first. Rain and moisture hits the lower logs on high winds and water bounces off the ground and hits the logs on heavy rain. Window openings are another weakness. Many times moisture from condensation on the inside of the window will drip down on the logs and insufficient sealing on the outside of the window lets water drip down on the logs below. Take good care around the windows!

Shawn, I know you've done a lot of these cabins on your own in your life (I haven't), but I have an idea for you... I was watching you pull up the log at 6 minutes in, and I noticed that the trees that you have the lift lines attached to bend towards the cabin as you lift the logs into place. Over time, you could be pulling the roots of those trees out of the ground causing the tree to eventually lean in towards the cabin. Might I suggest that you attach secondary support lines to the trees at the same height as you have the lift lines, and attach that line to a base of second tree further out from the cabin so that the second tree will help keep the lift line tree from developing a permanent lean towards the cabin. Just a thought, and it will ensure you don't have an accidental tree falling over while you've got a heavy log in mid air.

Yes Les, I noticed the same thing. And wondered if future winds may bring it down . Not sure if the tree is going to be kept after building the house or not. Food for thought though. I was marvelling that upon his original decision to build here he would have had to have selected an area that had trees in significant positions for him to use for all this pulley work. The man's brain work amazes me !!!

Shawn, you will get less chain block drop if you tie back your lift cable tree tops to the base of another tree at each end. I did this and it does help a lot. Just a suggestion, I'm not there.

Hey Shawn, if you store those scribing pens with the felt tip down they will work better as the ink will continually saturate the writing tips. Hope the info helps.
