Shay Has Character; Are You Even Watching?

The reason why people believe shay has no character is become she was one of the most normalized characters on the show. She wasn’t quirky, didn’t play a stereotype like other minority characters. Most people are drawn to the over the top characteristics of some of the cast so when you have someone like Shay who isn’t over the top they can come off as boring to some.

I have very many feelings about Esme (mostly postive, I just love female anti-heros or anti-villains or villains with depth partly because classic gender roll deconstruction) but those are long and annoying and KZbin is not the platform to discuss them on, if you have twitter/tumblr I would love to give you my insights. But anyways Shay always deserves more love in all ways so thanks for giving her some of your time

I love Shay, I think she tries a little too hard to be perfect & that can cause issues at times. I wonder where the Shay & Lola friendship will go. The boyfriend issue with Tiny & Shay stealing money from Lola's restaurant seemed to resolve its self too easily. I wonder if this will boil over between both & explode later on & either break up there friendship or at least change it forever

+eazytooquik I don't think it will. Lola has become such a civilized person that I'd be shocked if she held it against Shay. The drama with Tiny is also probably done, but that's not to say they may not find another reason to reconsider their friendship. Although, I think if there's any issue, it'll likely come from Frankie. Perhaps Frankie insists on staying friends with Esme but Lola doesn't want her around after what she did to Saad?

I can't stand her character. The racism story arch is the only time I did. But when she went after Dallas in the weight room, being judgy all the time, and not liking Esme or Saad just cause of Tiny, it really annoyed me.

And then when she got mad at Tiny for being sexually attracted to her like wtf was that about? Like he’s not being disrespectful or forcing or pressuring you to do anything so what’s the problem? Ugh 🤦‍♀️

Esme was in a long line of mean girl type characters who normally get deconstructed and expanded on, but in this case couldn't do to the show canceling. This would have been a good opportunity to explore someone experiencing borderline like symptoms, but due to the show ending we couldn't see her work towards getting help.

Shay has Character just lack a real story line based around her not where she is a background character helping to move the plot along. Like Hazel or Shantay. A black girl being determined and smart isn't a story line or a plot point it's character. The same character that Liberty and Shantay play. The difference between specifically these 4 black women is Liberty was a main character, Shantay and Hazel are background characters and Shay has a small story line not a background characters but definitely overshadowed by her cast. Liberty was overshadowed by Emma and Manny. Hazel by Paige Ashley. Shantay by Holly J Anya kinda Mia. If Jt didn't die Liberty would be just as forgotten as Shantay

No, she chewed her ouy because they hugged and Shay thought that meant they did something in there. Shay didn't trust her supposed best friend or boyfriend, and held the fact that Tiny wanted sex and she didn't against the two.

I think people mainly dislike Shay because they find her boring and think she has no character. No really the colour of her skin. My recent video on Degrassi's race problem is basically the "Hazel done dirty". I don't have much else to say on the topic.

NotAVampyre Sorry it’s just Degrassi hasn’t always treated their POC characters well. Hazel got one storyline, and she was a main character for several seasons, Kendra Mason randomly disappears, Chantay it took like 7 years to graduate, Chris Emma’s ex really did nothing. Sooo? Then again Derek Haig and Bruce are so bland and useless

Sure, many things get lost to the sands of time, but when things like Frankie's dad and why he left are brought up, the reasoning is left extra vague. Degrassi Nudes is just a technical casualty of the move from TeenNick to Netflix. They needed new viewers of Next Class to be able to follow the show without being forced to go back and watch TNG for backstory, so the show basically had to act as if it never happened.

Degrassi Corner yeah i watched the netflix show first and i was surprised when i found out there was so much plot before it So went all the way back in time to degrassi junior high and made my way up It was surprising how much more you notice when you go back and rewatch
