Thanks for the great video! It looks like those leaks have been happening for years. It amazes me that someone would not try to address those issues early on rather than let them get to the point they're at now. It makes you wonder what else they've been ignoring. We also looked at a Kady Krogan maybe 20 years ago. I loved everything but the companionway for the cook in the galley. Only one person is going to be there and the cook is going to be interrupted as folks go back and forth. Also we are very fond of DRY boats. The leaks would have us running from a boat with that lack of basic care. You may wish to look at a Cabo Rico 38. It is a very seaworthy vessel and the build quality is excellent. Scope one out. Tambey may find it would work for her. No. I don’t have a boat for sale but we do sail a Cabo Rico 34 and have been well pleased with our choice.

I have an Irwin 34 with the same portlight leaks. It was just doorskin paneling over the fiberglass hull. I have done one side of the Vberth. removed the trim and portlights, cut new paneling and re bedded everything. check the chainplates for deck leaks
@jefffrayer82383 жыл бұрын
I'd buy the Krogen long before the 42'. Fell in love soon as I saw it. Beautiful lines. Those port lights make for good ventilation especially with screens. Hull is solid fiberglass so wood is cosmetic. I'd rebed the portlights, chainplates, check pivots & cables on swing keels etc. and put it in the water. Redo the interior wood while cruising. Beautiful boat and you know what you are getting. Looks well designed with old traditional ideas. But, maybe there is a better boat out there waiting.
@Sailboatstory3 жыл бұрын
We prefer this one over the P42 as well. Topsides aren't solid though, they're cored along with the decks in these KK38s. That's actually the reason for our hesitancy on this one. Those leaking portlights could potentially be saturating the core of the hull. We're thinking there's something better out there for us. We'd still entertain buying one of these if we can find one that's in better condition and within our financial reach.
@davidries57943 жыл бұрын
Agreed-water coming in by the chain plates means they are probably corroded. And how much of the material they are bedded in will need to be replaced as well?

@Sailboatstory3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they seem to be very intentionally laid out and designed with plenty of convenient storage in mind. We certainly love that aft "Captain's Quarters" stateroom. We see the Whitby 42s for sale fairly often, but we certainly prefer a Pullmans Berth, Centerline queen, or the aft stateroom like on the KK38s over the "large U-shaped" berths in the Whitby42, KP44, Bristol 41.1, etc. The super-shallow draft is really suitable to our cruising style as well. Lots to like about the KK38. Wish there were more of them. Only 85 out there.

Volvo penta engines were really what the old timers around where I live wanted when my dad build his version of a Colin Archer ship. My grandfather had one that ran without fail for 50 years, but you do need to maintain them and they are usually easy to fix. I'm not sure how the newer models are, but I know my dad lover the one we got hold of. It was a used refurbished Volva Penta engine and that thing worked without fail, season after season. Sure we had to do some TLC to it each year, like changing the oil and such and it ran fine year after year. Older core systems like the starter and other plug in systems do wear out, but once that happens they are fairly easy to change out. Keep in mind though that my information is 30 years old, so much might have happened since then, so there might be more modern engines that are a lot more efficient or better in some other way due to new developments and better materials used.

In my opinion the Krogen is nearly the ideal boat for a family to cruise the Caribbean and the Eastern United States, they have gone much farther but an absolutely awesome choice for island cruising. Have sailed that region for decades; deck space, draft, ventilation, 2 anchors at the ready, immense space under a canopy( heat salvation above and below), good in a big chop and not slow are keys to island sailing and the K38 has it in spades. Weren't too many made, getting old now so dig deep when you survey. Get real smart about those centerboards and take the best of care there, but do not be intimidated when used to your full advantage you can do some really cool things. I'm way past that now but the k38 would be near the top of the list for tropic and temperate region sailing. and hay maybe you can get to Caesar's Creek north of Key Largo(told you about it some years ago) good spot to sit out a winter blow. Best, John

I dunno. Looked a little claustrophobic to me. And the leaks/rotten wood? Have you considered a boat with a raised coachroof/wheelhouse? Duel helm etc. and much more space for a live-aboard. Just my 10 cents. Oh and I did read your missive. (Brasier, holding tank etc!)

The leaks should probably kill the deal. Else, it might turn out to be the Kadey Kraken 38.

Sort of like "If it don't leak, it ain't a Kadey Krogen 38".

@@Sailboatstory The manufacturing process was not changed after the boats proved to be sieves? Is there no fix available?

It seems the Taiwan yard did not have the highest quality standards back in the day. Make sure pay for an inspector that has experience in with both as repairing water intrusion if you find a better KK38. And a teak deck? Do they not have a tendency to degrade and leak as well?

Apparently the ones built after 1984 leak less. This on was a 1992 model.
