To be fair, the next day, before the men's match, Serena's coach (Mouratoglou) was being interviewed by the ESPN tennis panel and he basically gave all the credit to Bianca for being great in all aspects of her game during the match. HE did not make excuses for Serena. That being said, I wish Serena didn't say what she said. She doesn't need to do that.

Totally agree. Serena should not make excuses for herself and give credit to her opponent although she did a bit. We all know what Serena's capable of when she's at her best. 23 majors speaks for itself. It's not like we look any less of Serena.

Guys you made my day. Congrats for your show. You are 1000% right in all your statements. Great great comments. I saw during the match people in the crowd acting like mads, hysteria, literally like nuts from the nut house, when Bianca missed by one inch. I would really pay money to have seen their faces at the end of the match when Bianca won. Unfortunately the cameras started to focus on Bianca at that point.

Yes I was happy when the great great Serena double faulted, yes I admit it, doest this make mad? but I didn’t behave like that insane woman from the crowd they were showing 2 or 3 on TV, or like other people from Serena’s family, or like famous film directors. BTW did you notice the decency of the people in Bianca’s box. On the other hand I admired when Serena won beautifully a rally, because when you can’t be blind to quality and class. What I hate though is that the victory of a young and talented athlete against Serena doesn’t seem to have any value in the eyes of Serena’s supporters. It’s a shame. A total lack of fairplay from the Americans in general.

The people in that arena were no tennis fans. They were a rowdy group supporting Serene because she is American. 80% of them know nothing about tennis otherwise they would know than in tennis, the courtesy and the rules says stfu when a player is about to serve. It’s like somebody went to a Super Bowl arena and brought the supporting crowd over.

Sorry, Tim lost me at "if you don't think Serena is the GOAT, you are probably just wrong". Steffi is still the GOAT, and it's not close. Steffi retired at 30 (right after winning the French and making the Wimbledon final). At the age Steffi retired, Serena only had 14 majors to Steffi's 22. Even with playing many additional years, Steffi still has 58 more weeks at number 1, and 35 more overall tournament wins.

GoldenBoy man your logic is really flawed, I’m not taking anything from Serena and race is not part of my argument, she is the best ever but also she is a bad looser and there are a lot of examples of this: Serena vs Klijsters, Serena vs Stosur, Serena vs Osaka and also some press conferences where she said basically that her opponent won because she played bad, she recently also said that the Wimbledon final she lost vs Kerber doesn’t count because she had her baby 6 months before. Federer, Nadal or Novak always credit their opponents when they loose so why Serena can’t just say Bianca was better than me today? In sports it doesn’t matter if you think you can play better if in the match you couldn’t. “Could haves” belong to the world of fantasy.

19 years old and already Bianca can actually brag to the tennis world that she beat the legendary Serena Williams. Yes, others have conquered the Serena legacy too, but for Bianca to do this at such a young age, it could very well be the launching point for the rest of her tennis career. If she can beat Serena in Serena's own backyard like that, what's stopping Bianca from conquering Australia next year?? Maybe even Wimbledon! Serena had a bad match. Serena is the best server on the WTA and she could not get a first serve in. Serena's serving was a disaster in this match. She put only 44% of first serves in play, double faulted on break points 3 times and made 33 unforced errors. Bianca played an excellent match and deserved to win. She was the better player on the day. Serena saying she didn't play well isn't an excuse, it was a reality. Bianca played a really smart match. I hope she can keep healthy too. She has had back and shoulder injuries at such a young age but she has a good team around her now so hopefully she can keep on winning for a LONG time! Congratulations Bianca!

@Harvey Grant She definitely faked it. Serena has a track record of ruining the win of her opponents. She will create whatever drama she can to make it seenm like she didn't technically lose. When she said that she has had this injury before and it will just go away by itself after a day or so, I knew she was making it all up. She skipped the next tournament because she didn't feel ready after being totally outplayed by Bianca. She said she played better against Bianca (which she calls her worst match in the tournament) than she did against Halep. And Kerber doesn't count, and the referee stole her match against Naomi. The list goes on and on. 😑
@Zarumaans
@Zarumaans 5 жыл бұрын
@Harvey Grant That comment had nothing to do with "race". If Bianca owned Sharapova, I would've used the same metaphor. Now back to this comment. She obviously knew she didn't stand a chance against Bianca and knew she was heading towards a humiliating 6-1, 6-0. She can't bare losing to a 19 year old and that's why. You can see how she always like to create a scene when she's about to lose. Just to name a few: Clijsters, Stotsur, Osaka, Vinci. Even Bianca knew she was faking it which is why she said that she already had feel of how Serena can play and she's an easy piece of cake for her. That is why Bianca said Serena is intimidated by her and that she will be even better than Serena. These are Bianca's words, not mine by the way :)
@Zarumaans
@Zarumaans 5 жыл бұрын
@Harvey Grant First of all, I'm not a racist so I don't have to refrain from using any word as long as the context is acceptable. Secondly, regarding the intimidation and that Bianca will be even better than Serena, those are the words of Bianca, not me (I already wrote that down, didn't you see?). So that is not my opinion. You are making a fool out of yourself by flaming me when I clearly said "Bianca said it". You said you've been watching tennis for more than 30 years, yet you don't know that smashing your racket is an automatic code violation??? It's the same for everyone, it's the RULES! Your first offense is a warning, second offense a point penalty, third offense a game penalty, and forth penalty a default. Most players will stop after they've gotten a warning because they know darn well that they'll lose a point for the next offense. And if you've watched tennis for that long, you should know that Carlos is a very strict umpire who's gotten in trouble with many top "MALE cough cough" players. Including Novak, Nadal, and Wawrinka to name a few. Nadal's uncle even confronted Carlos in an airplane accusing him of being harsh to Nadal. What happened at the US Open last year is all Serena's own fault. If she had just accepted the warning and behaved, nothing would've happened. Unless ofcourse she wanted something to happen so she could use that as an excuse for her loss? See, it's something she tends to do. Even with clear video footage and her coach admitting he coached, Serena still denies that it ever happened until today! That speaks ton about her character. Against Stotsur she said my bad things the "FEMALE cough cough" Umpire calling her unattractive inside when she made the correct call! The hindrance rule is clear and if she didn't make the call, then it would be unfair to her opponent. And Serena later lied in an interview that she lost a point for yelling "C'Mon". The list goes on but I'm lazy to type. Anyway, you can come back again after Serena actually beats Bianca, until then you're just making assumptions that Serena can easily beat her.

I wanted Bianca to win from the start, she has the confidence and self belief to win and remember her earlier wins in the year has brought her to this point. Serena never faced anyone with the game to beat her until the final. Here are Bianca’s results since Sunday Nov 18 2018. At this time Bianca was ranked 178 in the WTA Rankings and had moved up three places on Monday Nov 19 2018. She won the ITF USA 40A 6-0 6-1 in the final. Sunday 6 Jan 2019 Auckland Open Lost in final 6-2 5-7 1-6 to J.Gorges. Points 578, WTA rank 107 07.01.2019 moved up 45 places. Australian Open 2019 lost in the 2nd round to A. Sevastova 3-6 6-3 2-6. Mexican Open semi final lost to S.Kenin 4-6 6-3 5-7 Sat 2 March 2019. Monday 4 March 2019 WTA rank 70 down two places, points at this time 814. WTA players ahead of her on this date you may know >>> Numbers after names are WTA rank ....Monica Puig 58, Kirsten Flipkens 53, Victoria Azarenka 48, Belinda Bencic 45, Johanna Konta 39, Sofia Kenin 37, Venus Williams 35, Su-Wei Hsieh 31, Maria Sharipova 27, Donna Vekic 25, Daniella Collins 23, Jelena Ostapenko 22, Madison Keys 17, Julia Georges 16, Ash Barty 13, ...Serena Williams 11, Kerber 6, Pilskova, Stephens, Halep, Kvitova, Osaka, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 respectively, you get my drift. I had never heard of Bianca Andreescu before the Indian Wells Masters( she was given a wild card to enter the event). I am a subscriber to PRIME VIDEO as I like to watch tennis both men’s and women’s and it gives full coverage of both Masters and Grand Slam events. Watching the Indian Wells women’s tournament I was captivated by Bianca’s all court game, drop shots, slices, one handed back hands not your usual “ bang bang” baseline power game, Su-Hsieh has a similar type of game and I like to watch both. This was a different type of tennis and I was immediately hooked, I mustn’t forget Taylor Townsend at this point( attacking net play) reminiscent of the great Martina Navratilova. I followed her progress in each round and each time she seemed fatigued but always managed to find a way to win. I had never seen this mental fortitude especially in an eighteen year old. I think there are many out there who had never heard of her also. She reached the final and played Angelique Kerber and won in three pulsating sets of tennis 6-4 3-6 6-4. This was her first Masters 1000 title and moved her up to no. 24 WTA rankings Monday 18 March 2019, up 36 places, points 1913. Miami Open Monday 25 March 2019, retired injured against A.Kontaveit round of 16, 1-6 0-2. French Open Friday 31st May 2019, retired in the second round (shoulder injury) against S.Kenin. At this point I thought she would suffer from “burnout” as she had achieved so much in the early part of the tennis season. She also missed Wimbledon and returned at the Canadian Open(Rogers Cup). She was back to form and played that “never say die” attitude tennis we have all become used to and reached the final to play Serena Williams, the first Canadian player to reach the final in 50 years. unfortunately Serena retired injured in the final 3-1 to Bianca at the time. Bianca was the Champion and was good preparation for the forthcoming final Grand Slam of the year the US Open. At that point I had a self realisation that we could see both Serena and Bianca in that final after watching their matches in the Rogers Cup. WTA ranking on Monday 12 August rank 14, up 13 places, points 2837. Bianca was seeded 15 at the US Open. Suffice to say Bianca made her way to the final after quite a few three set matches and met Serena in the final. I felt that she had the game to beat Serena as she had played “tougher” opponents and had to find a “way to win” after seemingly being outplayed. At this point she was 7-0 against top ten players soon to be 8-0. Bianca won the final against Serena in two sets 6-3 7-5( after being 5-1 and two championship points up in the second set). Serena came back to 5-5 but Bianca held her serve in the next game and managed to break Serena in the 12th game. Bianca is the 2019 US Open women’s champion at 19 years of age. WTA RANK as of 9th September 2019 is WORLD No. 5. Points 4835. As Bianca said in her acceptance speech “Let’s keep going”.

Sid your comment about "excuse after excuse" etc. from Serena is going a bit far. Loved your takes on the game up to this point. You were overstating Serena being done. She didn't play well, she knew it, and she was graceful, I believe, in her comments. It was also right after the game when Serena is still trying to find the answers for herself. But you guys are bang on about the mind game and the notion of intimidation. Oh, I also don't think Serena retired at Rogers Cup, because she didn't want to play Bianca. A re-match will be great to see if Serena commits to another year.

Maybe she is not done. However any highly achieved athlete has to RECOGNIZE THAT THEY HAVE to CHANGE THEIR WHOLE BODY/MIND system if they are going to compete with the younger ones. Sorry. I am a life long Dancer/Runner and know at 70.........Serena looks like she still eats what she wants, has not taken up some of the newer lean out programs. See Beyonce. She is younger but doesn't hide that she does some of the more modern concepts like vegan or cleanses, etc. Sorry, Serena looks like she thinks she can still do the same w/out change. Serena is 38 and with that comes many different factors. She hasn't won a grand slam in years. She hasn't won a trounament this year. Her body is not the same as 28 or 18. Her nerves is what happens when you get older and much is on the line. So, to make this that much of an upset of someone young who has won several tournaments this year, has beaten all the top players, and has little fear - not that much of a surprise.
@innismor11
@innismor11 5 жыл бұрын
Serena hasn't won a tournament since she returned. 0 for 15. She completed (to a loss) in each of her Grand Slam entries in 2019, but failed to complete any of the four (only) other tournaments she entered, begging out with injury or something else.. In all of them. Serena is clearly only playing to try and win DS's, but that's not enough fitness and tennis. Not to win 7 straight matches at a GS. Australian Open in January is her last gasp ... its the fastest court amongst the GS's, so her best chance at a win leveraging her big serve.... as she continues to slow down.

I don't think Serena will win her 24th major. She's too slow and heavy after coming back form having her child. Bianca Andreescu is overflowing with confidence. If she doesn't let success get to her head and keeps working, she can stack up the trophies. Naomi Osaka has the game, but maybe she lacks the personality to go with it. This US Open has shown us two players who are laikely to become dominant in years to come, the other one being Daniil Medvedev.

Agree. Bianca was the last player she wanted to see in the final. Although Serena probably would not favour the idea of having to play her again in future finals of tournaments, I think the champion in her would still relish the opportunity just to get another crack @ Bianca. It's not like Bianca is 10-0 against her. Williams was dominated by Osaka last year and Serena got her back in Toronto this year quite handily. I too wish she would compose herself better when she's down in a big match. Her negative body language is difficult to watch at times.

Delusional. Serena's big weapon, the one she can control and the basis of her game is her serve. She DOUBLE FAULTED away a SET. She made LESS than 50% of her 1st serves. The NUMBERS dont lie. She did NOT play her game. She couldn't get a serve in to start her points. THAT is the truth. Not this fantasy that these people are spewing. It is not POSSIBLE for Serena to be more gracious. IF Bianca is better than Serena, time will tell. Where is Osaka? This was the same litany when she beat Serena. Where is Muguruza? Same litany when she beat Serena. Where is Kerber? Same litany when she beat Serena. Where is Halep? Same litany when she beat Serena. I will end with a quotes from the 2 time champions Kvitova when they tried to rope her into the same narrative after she beat Serena in a clay court match: just because you beat Serena doesn't mean you are better than her. "Just because you beat Serena once, doesn't mean you will ever beat her again." Halep "Serena is still the best, she is still the one to beat." Arguably these two ladies know better than those of us sitting on the sidelines.

Not to take anything away from Andreescu, because she fully deserved the win and I predicted her to win the final, but if this was Serena’s chance to win let’s say her 15th Grand Slam title instead of her chance to equalize Margaret Court’s record then Serena would have wun. Woulda, shoulda, I know. Serena is a nervous wreck and even after winning so many titles and clearly being the goat of women’s tennis she still gets nervous to a level where she blocks herself. Motherhood, getting older and the competition getting stronger doesn’t help her either. I think Serena will win one GS-title to equalize Court, but will not break the record. I hope I’m wrong.
