Bill Wiggins is based of a character from the books called "Wiggins" - leader of a group of street children known as the "Baker Street Irregulars" who helped out Sherlock.

Arguably the best episode of Sherlock. The dedication to each character is goes above and beyond, all the way around. The love between Sherlock, Mary, and Watson is eternal.

You can really see how great Mary and John's relationship is, how well it was set up in the first two episodes of this season, and how the possibility of it falling apart in this episode is so emotional and gripping. I forget how good this show is until I see it being reacted to and then I'm like "dang, it's just so clever!"

Rekkai saying John fell in love and wanted to propose to Mary when he was in mourning, is very telling on how this relationship started. Steven Moffat likes the idea of 'killing a dragon for you' so he uses it here between the Christmas talk Sherlock and Mycroft, that Sherlock has his dragon now (Magnusson) but in the very first episode of his very first ever show written, he's already dropping the line "I 'ld kill a dragon for you" between the two main protagonists and in a later season he even named an episode 'At last a dragon' cause Moffat is such a romantic at heart. His favorite book AND film after all is 'The Princess Bride'. Also, in the 'Sign of Three' when Sherlock is reading the telegrams during the wedding, one was from 'CAM' and Mary's face is telling, but we didn't know what it meant ... untill now. Magnusson was after Mary from the start, playing with her, John was her pressure point, and then, when Sherlock came back from the not-dead, it was a feast for Magnusson.

This is based on the short story, "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton" wherein Holmes, in the guise of a plumber named Escott (partial reason for William S. Baring-Gould's adoption of the "William Sherlock Scott Holmes" name theory), gets engaged to Milverton's housemaid, Agatha to gain access to his blackmail materials. The title is a play on a different story, "His Last Bow," which gets a nod somewhere along the line ("an east wind coming" is from this). In "The Man with the Twisted Lip," Watson had to go to an opium den to retrieve a friend's addicted husband.

If you haven't seen it yet, I think you might dig "The Night Manager" (2016). It stars Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Coleman & Elizabeth Debicki. It was a 6 part BBC series.

Wiggins is a kid in the books -- the leader of the Baker Street irregulars (lower-case I), the group of "street arabs" (read: poor and possibly homeless children) who were Holmes' eyes and ears because they went unnoticed and could easily eavesdrop. This was updated to the "homeless network" because having children help in investigations isn't looked on as so innocuous these days).

I’m pretty sure that Magnusson is meant to be a Rupert Murdoch type character. Someone who only cares about how to increase their coffers, has little to no regard for the truth, along with a lack of respect for people and will purposefully try and have some control over the leaders of the countries that he has interests in. I know that has certainly been the case in his native Australia, here in the UK and I believe he even had to gain US citizenship to guarantee that he could continue in that vein in the US.
