It's karate, a style that includes grappling and clinching which exist in the core of Karate. no muay technique is used. knees, elbows, clinches and low kicks are not exclusive to muay thai. and the technical execution is very very different. it does add a lot of Judo into it, but it doesn't make it "not karate".

Because the focus is the kyokushin Shidokan just use some Muay Thai and judô techniques because of the experience of the creator of the style who fights with Muay Thai and judo practitioners (Sorry because of my english) Osu

The creater of Shidokan karate added muay thai to kyokushin karate to create Shidokan. I think he participated in matches with muay thai fighters and lost some and found out that Muay Thai will enhanse his karate.

What makes a Karate style a form of Karate is that it has historical roots in Okinawa's local arts such as Tigwa, Torite and Kata. The word "Karate" is just a generic term for any style which has those historic roots. It's like how people use the word "Jutsu" to refer any combative art which was historically used by the Samurai warriors. Source site:

I am 5 years late to this. I do not practice any version of shidokan, fyi. I only practiced shotokan years ago. I believe if the spar goes to the ground, the only way the competition spar continues is in a grapple form. The kick to the on the ground opponent is what got the Ref right on the offending guy. I think the short skip was when the other guy got up and grabbed the dude pissed that he did such a dishonorable and dangerous move. The ref tried to separate them but by then the "kicked on the ground" guy's team came up and let their fists talk about how they did not like the dishonorable conduct. Probably also why everyone started hitting him and then him being ejected very roughly. These competition spars are rough, but they still try to make sure that they do not become deadly.
