I just had to put my german shepherd rescue (from Jeddah) down last week due to cancer. I really really really want to get another dog that fits my family and homestead. I'm a medically retired vet and have all the time, desire, attention and love to give so I've been watching a lot of your videos to make myself better when I do get the next one. If youtube had a love button, it'd be for videos like this. Thanks for making these.

Please consider adopting one from a shelter..or Rescue...The shelters in the US are overflowing with GSDs and Malinois...needing good homes. . One Phoenix shelter currently has 93 GSDs and 14 Malinois!! ..California is a nightmare for both breeds too..including Pit Bulls....Theyre being euthanized daily... .Some of my best dogs were rescues.

My god! This was the perfect video at the perfect time for me. I brought home a female GSD 3 weeks ago and I’m learning just as much as she is in the way of training. She learns certain behaviors literally in MINUTES so i of course assume every command should be that simple. Sometimes it’s hard to realize that she’s only 11 weeks old for as smart as she is. Hard to find that perfect balance of training and just having fun with the pup. I feel like I’m looking for every opportunity to train when sometimes she really just wants to play!
@1packatak
@1packatak 3 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget that what a puppy seems to know so fast can disappear in an instant. What she can do right now in the quiet of your living room will probably disappear if you take her in the kitchen with more commotion. And definitely be gone if you take her outside. You have to work each individual behavior and work it in various locations under various distractions. And your ability to mark behaviors appropriately (or give appropriate punishments/corrections) as Haz is discussing also plays a significant role in how well your dog learns. Those wonderful working dogs (GSD, Malinois, Doberman, Rottweiler etc) are a blast to train and will keep you on your toes for their lifetime💖💖💖
@Figjimmy11

@@1packatak Yes, everything we do inside the house in the morning, we repeat outside at night and so far she’s catching on really quick! Crate trained/ potty trained literally overnight. Only cried the first night we brought her home. She know “leave it” rather it be a bowl on the coffee table, a toy, or objects on the grass out on our walk. She learned on day 2 to sit on her place/ cot as soon as we walk to the front door, mastered by day 3! Anytime we walk to a door going out or coming in, she sits and stays. She’s heeling nicely but does get distracted a little and that’s tolerable for now. Really we are having a blast learning how she thinks! I had a male GSD about 20 yrs ago and I remember how easy it was to train him but he was a bit spazzy. My current girl is sooo calm.

Great video explaining this subject. I train for IGP I love using verbal markers I find that used correctly with tone the dog will be more open and the whole picture will look and be much better. Wile I’m not completely against clicker I will use the clicker for introducing articles off the track I find that the dog pairs it well and stays more calm and I get more out of that part of the training. Each dog is different! Great content!

Affirmation, "Goood" with petting, combined with strong corrections, is making a HUGE difference with reactivity for me & my German Shepherd. "Chip" with treats, and intermittent "Good" (no treats but praise) works great as a "jackpot" for everything else. I never said "No" and corrected until a trainer worked with me & coached me correctly. But Haz' system WORKS GREAT!!!!!!

I'm currently enrolled in Robert Cabral's membership program--and it's honestly pretty good--but I'm so looking forward to Haz' online training. I'm also working with an in person trainer every other week, he's good, works with pet owners of all breeds. But Haz UNDERSTANDS high drive dogs so well, and that's where a lot of my issues with my working line GSD stem from, though. And Haz is just so good at explaining things. This will be AWESOME!!💖

Haz, excellent video as usual. I have a question, when you start your dog on an e-collar, is there some sort of progression? As in, do you first teach him heel, or recall? Can you mix both? How do you transition from the prong to the e-collar? Sorry if these are too many questions, I’ve watched your videos on the ecollar and they were excellent, but I would appreciate a more in-depth video where you discuss the different stages of your e-collar training. Keep up the good work! Huge fan! If I was in Canada I would be at Shield K9 in a heartbeat, you guys are by far the best I’ve seen!

Minor point of confusion (and I'd seen other trainers also say/do this): "Chip" as a terminal marker, meaning an inherent "break" after reward? But I understand you also want to mark the split second the dog does the behavior? Example: I say "sit", I think I'm supposed to "Mark" ("Chip") the second dog's butt touches the ground. But I don't want him to immediately get up afterward. I admit, I sometimes wait to say "Chip" and reward while getting direct eye contact to build duration, and I think maybe that's what you're implying here...but that part a little confusing, whether the dog is automatically "released" after "Chip & reward". But I bet you'll cover adding duration in more detail in the video series!😝

@@ZMAN166 hi Zack--didn't get an answer on this one, but Haz DOES use the word "Break" as a release. That's how I've been training, using all the same marker workers as Has (Chip, gooood, Break, No, eh-eh). I also use "yes", specifically on recall mostly, because I intentionally make myself super enthusiastic every single time I say "come" and he does, lol. Cuz the recall is 100% non-negotiable, I want him to be thrilled to come every time, whether I have a food or treat on me or not (my enthusiasm has to be enough to give my boy a dopamine dose!!😍). Anyway, going to continue what I'm doing.

Personally, when I use my e collar, I use the vibration in junction with a command to get his attention and cece it once he responses to the command. It's kinda like the Ah ah but not necessarily negative imo. It's a, "hey, I'm over here, I want you to listen" Where as if he chooses to not listen to the command I zap with a firm no. I repeat the command while doing the vibration. If he acts like I'm not in the area and looses it which rarely happens, I'll constantly zap and increase power accordingly.

Hi! Thank you for this great video! What do you like to use for your consequence after using an assertive "NO!!!" ? With "Ah Ah" you said you will bring the dog back to the desired position, but how would you give a consequence for "No"? A lot of times I just bring the dog back into the desired position after using "No", but I use "no" when the dog is doing something they have a high drive to do, so just bringing them back into the desired position/removing them from the situation isn't enough and they fight against me. I have found that applying the vibration once (not stem) to break their attention/focus works if they don't "let go" of whatever has their attention even after applying "No". The vibration is given and the dog must come back to a heal position. Would this vibration be a consequence if not listening to the "No", or must I apply a consequence regardless if they listen to "No" or not? Thank you so much!
