When I was at the height of my depression at 16, I spent most of my time daydreaming and creating complex fantasy worlds. It got to the point where being pulled out of my fantasy and into the real world would bum me out in a big way, and I withdrew more and more from friends and school. I was horrifically abused as a kid and developed maladaptive day dreaming as a result. Still fucks with me as an adult and I always have to be hyper vigilant that I don't go back to those coping mechanisms when I'm stressed. This is so harmful. I spent so long creating my own perfect reality instead of fixing my life that everything in the real world was depressing and disappointing. I hate shifting tiktok so much and I especially hate the adults encouraging it.

I'm sorry......I was also abused as a kid and it's only now in my 20s that I'm realizing that my daydreaming might be a big problem. I daydream for hours every day, but I'm not sure what the diagnostic criteria are for maladaptive daydreaming.
@Niniminns
@Niniminns 3 жыл бұрын
The sad thing is that some people who experience maladaptive daydreaming might see these tiktoks and start thinking they're actually shifting and should do more of it. Shifters talk about how they remember experiencing months of a different reality and that's what makes it different from every other possible explanation. Well, a lot of people remember their dreams and fantasies too. I don't doubt that you could actually convince yourself that those are memories from a different life you have. I do wonder if there are experiences that don't have a psychological explanation yet. Like I once read a story from someone who said they once had a dream of living several years of another life and remembered their old life the whole time and missed it. I wonder if that can actually happen and why and I don't want the multivese theory explanation.

I'm just a 19 year old on medication but due to experience and talking with doctors and such i'd like to just dump it all finally, there's this thing called dissociation, where you basically daydream but on the regular, and its unintentional, and some of the reasons are anxiety and the environment. My environment was terrible, and I used to excessively dissociate, and make up hours and hours of scenarios with very heavy detail and many were prolonged stories where I was the main character and all the people around me were these 1 dimensional characters who were there to give attention to me, from just imagining having a relationship, to just regular banter, literally just boring chitchat with a stranger I made up in my head not even a celebrity, you could imagine how bad my anxiety was, having a free conversation with ANYONE was impossible, and the characters usually include people around you, but they're not themselves but a version you'd like them to be. I remember my very first prolonged daydreams i had when i was prolly 8-10 years of age, of me being the center of attention of three people, and entire movies that i would immerse myself in, again, unintentionally, and this is, recently I've was told, a coping mechanism to shield yourself from the world. the one main aspect differentiating this from psychosis is you know that its not real, or at least you can be convinced that its all made-up. its not a healthy coping mechanism, its a little fucked, i still do it but way-way less due to meds, which have significantly reduced my anxiety and depression i couldnt be more thankful, whereas earlier it was 24/7, whenever i got free time. thinking back i cant even imagine my headspace, like my entire childhood, and what state of mind i was in when i was constantly dissociating, like ok this is very personal hear this, when i saw most this vid, my brian switched and i daydreamed of me being in the podcast and talking this exact same story, like as if reacting with you guys, yeah its pathetic, but its so quick and involuntary, i talk loud and express as if i was with people, but im not, and when i realized i was dissociating, and you guys were like, tell us about your um shifting or whatever, to these tiktokers i would say just um uh dont just dont, i dont despise them through my soul, they did nothing wrong however, this stuff is serious, for me at least, and very unhealthy ways that a lot of people are living like, i hope no person's brian is getting fucked watching this and then the dissociation gets worse, because when you have to stop with the dissociation, and face the real world, things gets even more harder to bear, i was in the worse case scenario luckily i survived in the hospital, then i was like great i failed this one too, wish i took more pills, and now im like thank the lord ive been given a second chance. this is what the doctor told me, when you catch yourself dissociating, you have to basically break down the hows and whys of the fake scenario and try to stop it, and find a real solution to the problem that your running away from, i hope people read this idk how many people know dissociating, but its not really pretty, and from India, in a middle class family, lucky to afford college through scholarships, these kids look like pieces of shit glorifying this there i said it, but its alright they dont know better, uh who cares ive wasted time yet again

i realised recently that I've spent a large portion of my youth dissociating or using stuff like social media to escape, that sometimes i'll be doing something completely mundane like watching a video or making the bed and realise that i've just zoned out and i'm imagining stuff like you described, sometimes i'll even be imagining myself doing the exact same thing i'm actually doing (does that make sense?) lol, and when i try to return to reality i just feel strange. it's been so long that i've been doing this that i barely even know how to not exist only in a fantasy
@an7057
@an7057 3 жыл бұрын
@@blue4155 yeah when you mean imagining yourself doing the same basic stuff, for me it's like yeah while I'm working I'm changing my reality up a bit, someone is there in my daydream and I'm talking and working, for me the daydreams are always with other people around, but yes you make sense. I'm sorry man, this stuff is hard, but it's alright you know, yeah you've been away from reality for most of your time, but if you can realize what's going on that's already immense progress, I'm proud of you. Things to make sure are to know that you are dissociating because we don't want psychosis to happen, and try to talk to a therapist about it, they will help you a lot, I'm coping with it in a healthy way beacuse of her. Also, you'd think, why we do this, this is just my observation, our brain is hyperactive and will always want to be stimulated all day, we are mentally really active, and that's a good thing. Hope things get better I'm sure they will, when your anxiety gets reduced your daydreaming decreases a lot too, so you can do it

Children are not privy to that! They think “envision your desired reality” literally means “Jump to any fictional world and you’re there, living it, IRL”. They’re kids, they’re caught up in imagination, ignorance, & instant gratification hence the INSANE steps they create to “Shift” & trying to tell them about what shifting really means will result in angry 9-17 y/os with troubled home lives and mental health issues telling you how you’re wrong and stupid for killing their joy while terribly misconstruing Neville Goddards & Stephen Hawkings THEORIES to argue that their furry jojo kpop anime world is REAL!

as a 15 year old, i admit that one time i tried to shift to a reality set in the victorian era with like carriages and those fancy houses and shit but nothing happened so i gave up entirely LOL thinking back now that was so ridiculous

Whats ridiculous about meditating? And people dont shift on their first try. You clearly arent educated enough to even know what shifting is. It can take years to shift. Its quantum jumping what do you expect?

finally some valid criticisms in the comments!! few months ago, a video about shifting was recommended to me and the title was so crazy i just had to find out if they were serious. And the girl was dead serious, giving tips on how to shift to anime worlds and hogwarts ofc. I expected mostly negative comments under that video, but they were completely opposite of that. Reading those comments made me feel like an outsider that just witnessed some weird cult ritual. Or better yet, being the only sober friend at a party while everyone else are drunk out of their minds.

It’s so funny cause in Ireland, the word “shift” means, to make out with someone. Can’t take them seriously every time they say shift 😂

It blows my mind that these kids are calling this “shifting” like it’s a new thing. It’s not new. It’s called using your imagination. And in extreme cases, maladaptive daydreaming. You basically imagine something so hard that you start dissociating / hallucinating and feel like you’re actually there. Personally I’ve never done this. I don’t experience dissociation. But that said, I’m a fantasy artist/writer with ADHD, so I think it’s safe to say I have a pretty active imagination. One of my favorite pastimes is just putting on headphones, sometimes even without music or sound, and tuning out the world around me and just imagining scenes from stories I’m working on in my head. I know I’m not there, it feels more like watching a movie than being at an actual physical place. But I have to imagine that “shifting” is very similar, just with a more intense element that makes you feel like you are in a real space. You aren’t going through some kind of portal. You’re just imagining very hard and making yourself intentionally dissociate/hallucinate.

Back in my day we used to call 'shifting realities' as something else, 'imagination' you know.
