Sadly its only the EP801 that gets the update (not the older EP8 / E8000). Not sure if there's technical limitations to the EP8 (the new EP801 has some hardware changes that allow 100 extra watts, and Autoshift with their new Di2 electronic shifting). Still its a solid update and good to see Shimano progress their current EP801 motor.

That's a disappointment, new to the ebikes. Just got a new Orbea Rise H10 6 months ago and it's a bit frustrating to see an update like this not available for my 6 month old bike but that's the way it goes I guess. I won't be running out to upgrade anytime soon unless the Pinion bikes come to Canada soon.

My first e-bike was a Commencal Meta Power SX Race. I did about 3,000km on it and then sold it for 2 main reasons. 1) I decided I don’t like ultra long/low/slack bikes. They handle like a bus. 2) The Shimano EP8 was a frustrating motor. It cuts out so easily if you pedal too fast e.g. imagine you are going down a hill and you know that the trail is about to start going up so you shift down a few gears in preparation for the climb. You pedal hard and fast, maybe 120+ rpm to try to maintain you speed but the motor just cuts out because it’s above the cutoff rpm for the motor so you quickly slow down and then when your cadence is below the cutoff rpm, the motor cuts back in but far too slowly so you have lost all of your momentum. It was a huge pain in the butt and when I demoed a Bosch Gen 4 I was blown away at how powerful and unrestrictive it felt. I sold the Commencal and bought a Mondraker Crafty R with Bosch Gen 4 and 2 years later I still absolutely love it. Fantastic all mountain/enduro bike that still handles like a trail bike when you’re on the twisties. Love it. It would take A LOT of convincing to get me to buy another Shimano motor. Also an aside, the Shimano motor stopped working one day. No obvious reason and the shop couldn’t work out why it stopped working so they replaced it. It was fine the day before and then just wouldn’t turn on the next day so reliability is questionable.

Rob, the expectations are very low if you think that they could have released this as a new engine, just because of this update. These bikes are big investments, how can we normalize them coming up with a new engine every year or two, just because of some updates? What they did to the EP8, and how fast they abandoned it, should not be accepted as the norm.

Having had my EP8 RS motor replaced in my Rise once, 7 weeks out of warranty (luckily my LBS complained to supplier so it was replaced FOC as they initially wanted to charge me 100% replacement cost!), I doubt my next bike will have a Shimano motor. The motors that have failed the most often with all my riding buddies were all made by Shimano. Some have had 4+ motors replaced. Bosch and Brose (Specialized) not so much, by a long way! It's reliability and serviceability/repairability that will influence my next purchase when the time comes, and it won't be Shimano unless they really up their game in both aspects.

The Overrun assist doesn't work! I Installed all the updates, did a quick spin. No noticeable difference. Power is more in Boost, yes, but you cant adjust overrun as the ETUBE app for phones. It doesn't give you the option! Only the app for shops "pro". So Shimano out of the gate too soon... Little point to this update if you don't put it immediately in the hands of the users. Rob you should have called this out in my opinion as a problem.... When is the cyclist app update available? More than version 5.3.2.... Should be immediately. Otherwise i have to go to the shimano shop tomorrow and find out from them how to make it work better as overrun in standard mode is not up to Bosch level in standard mode.

I made this update to 4.3 in the EP6 of my e-bike OGGI Potenza Sport. I had hope the limit was update to 45km/h (27.9 MPH). But no success. Some new OGGI Forza model are coming with a EP6 with this new velocity to 45. I do not know why my Potenza do not has this update.

How does the battery efficiency compare to the Bosch system? I have two e-bikes, one with a Bosch GEN 4 motor and one with a Shimano EP8 motor, and I consistently get more kilometers per watt with the Bosch system. I hope this update can somehow make the Shimano EP801 more efficient in terms of energy use. I have hesitated to buy a bike with an EP801 because of this.

Shimano dragging their heals once again, they're almost providing everything Bosch already does. They're only doing this because their competitors are bulling them into it, if they had they're way it would be a new model, with a slightly different mounting and it wouldn't be out for another 18 months.

Slowly reducing the power after you stop pedaling is very nice. The only thing The havevto take care of is the display and put it in the frame like every other bike brands😂. Is this latest EP801 engine anything you can by and put in your for example Orber Rise RS🤔, it would be nice to get my hand on one motor like this😂

With a ep801 motor you need the electric di2 shifter, di2 Derailleur, and linkglide 11 speed to get auto shifting. I have it on my Ari Temp Peak. It took some time to dial in the settings with all the options, but it now works incredibly well. Excited to see how this update improves things further. I still manually shift about 1/5 of the time while in auto shift mode, but autoshift with an occasional manual shift to finetune the ride experience works out well for me.

Hold on a minute @3.52 in. You're saying its quite dangerous that the shimano doesn't have overrun. No! Its dangerous that you got used to the bosch overrun. Shimano is more real, you're getting carried away and forgetting what mtb is about, you want overun.... go get a ktm! I have no problem with trying to get up and over and across obstacles and failing. That's mtb life. Constantly wanting more power, more overrun youre forgetting your roots, you want it to be so easy that you destroy the fun in trying and failing untill you succeed! The same goes for this new Dji motor. It's a ridiculous amount of power, and now another company will aim to beat that motor..... and where does it end. It ends with every man and dog just sat on a bike not pedal hitting 1 in 3 climbs while guzzling monster energy, shouting loser to anybody that dare to pedal a bike! So so so sad how this industry is going, and you rob will make a video about anything just to keep your videos relevant because its your job now! 🤮

So, a lifetime warranty? This isn’t a car, dude. A 2000-3000 mile 3 year warranty is more realistic. You could also just ride an acoustic if you have a problem with e-bike reliability.
@WeMakeLaw
@WeMakeLaw Ай бұрын
@@dkumagai302-3000 miles is NOTHING for bikes that cost like cars. Bosch CX Gen2 can last 50000km and more if you keep the bearings dry and/or replace them in time. 150€ repair kit. Pretty easy to do too. Polini for example sells every single part for their motor and you can service it yourself. It is also made to handle 45km/h. Oli motors are super silent and built like tanks too. Why would anyone buy a Shimano motor if these alternatives exist? LOVE Shimano components (use them exclusively on all my bikes), but their motor is a bad joke for people who actually use their bikes.
@dkumagai30
@dkumagai30 Ай бұрын
@@WeMakeLaw I’d like to see any bike last 50k km. You’re not being realistic, these are tiny motors being asked to propel (generally) overweight mountain bikers up 5-10% grades. It’s really no wonder they break with moderate frequency. Furthermore you would never get anywhere near the charge cycles out of a lithium chemistry battery to make it to 50k km. If the battery is integrated, you have to chuck the bike at a couple hundred deep cycles maximum. Bikes are largely consumable products, and e-bikes are bikes with consumable power plants. Yes, they’re expensive, but that doesn’t mean they should last longer than a mechanical equivalent. In fact, they generally don’t.

in your slo-mo vids you can see the chainsuck at the chainring from the huge wear of a derailleur system. This wear (shimano itself in his dealer seminars claims a lifetime of 300km for a 12g chain) is the biggest reason to never buy a derailleur-driven ebike. Pinion goes the right way with its MGU.
