@davidh74143 ай бұрын
in the 00's Shimano decided to split road and MTB cable-pull ratios so the groupsets are NOT cross compatible after 9 speed. Then , along comes gravel. Suddenly drop bar GRX works with MTB cassettes. Funny that... The biggest own-goal in the drivetrain history. Now along comes CUES but YET AGAIN, it has a different cable pull ratio to Road OR MTB. What a complete mess.

Cues seems to compatible with 11-12spd mtb derailers in practice. Only tried it in the stand myself, but it seemed perfectly fine. The incompatability is the different cassette spacing. You will have to use a linkglide cassette with cues shifters.

I've converted my gravel bike to flat-bar XT link glide with GRX cranks and brake calipers mated to XT touring levers as an experiment and it's incredible. So the thing with cues is, that its the perfect groupset for people, who are either new to bikes, or just lack the proper shift technique skill. Its cheap, reliable and basic, while still pretty nice. I am quite happy, that they are adding a dropbar shifter to the lineup, cause it would allow lots and lots new entry gravel bikes on the market, as well as being a really cheap way to build a gravel bike. The cassete itself has a 414% range, and if coupled with a 2x in the front, it would be an ultimate indestructible touring groupset. overall, i just love it!

I would like to see entry-level bikes that were basically steel-framed gravel bikes that could serve as touring bikes, on which someone could run either a 3x, 2x, or 1x groupset, and either flat or drops. That final part makes geometry more complicated, but lose it if needed. That bike could be used by anyone, and they would never need another bike, until they started to become a cyclist. Once they became cyclists, such a bike would still be useful, even if only a backup or for bad weather training miles. It would be heavy, but useful.

@vaska007623 ай бұрын
Linkglide technology was first introduced in 2021 as part of Shimano Deore XT, which is the second highest MTB groupset, just behind XTR. The thing is that Cues is actually heavier due to the Linkglide tech, and choice to use steel casettes with thicker teeth, incomparable to old Hyperglide, and this is due to the re-engineering Shimano has decided is needed because of the severe wear caused by e-bike motors these days.

I have bit older 4500 in one of my bikes (9s). I managed to marry it with 6500/6700 components (Ultegra - chain, cassette, wheels, brakes, bottom bracket) What's left were ST-s and rear derailleur. And this still works perfect! When I noticed what they did around 2014, I was (shall say) "in rage"(?). Why should I even bother myself with upgrading Tiagra, if it requires me to completely throw away everything and buy a 10s 4700 series equivalent, that literally can't be paired with anything else, later on? Everything back then >=105 went for 11 gears. Having that said - refreshed Tiagra 4700 (lets name it 11s 4800) is completely pointless, if there are already three 11s groups. Not to mention 12 s ones. Or do you want it still to stay 10s? One still has to throw away everything to move into it. Keep in mind plumber works and some wheels carpentry!

So had anyone noticed that cues is technically shimanos copy of Box's prime 9 system that came out like 6 years ago, a 9, 10, and 11 speed system that all runs on its own pull ratios and all use a 11 speed chain, they pretty much knocked off Toby Henderson. Though I did tell my boss shimano should do this when Box released their stuff, I was told I was crazy and shimano would loose money killing off the older sku's, he ate his words when I showed him the press releases of how much shimano was killing off in favor of cues. For those who don't know Toby Henderson is a race BMX legend who owns Box the produces BMX race components and MTB components.

They have great innovation, and they’ve targeted the higher end of the market. But at a time when bikes aren’t selling that well, is Shimano smart to simplify their range and go after the lower price points?
@danielbum9123 ай бұрын

@tinatpasselepoivre3 ай бұрын
the entry level bike thing will stay niche unfortunatly. Why? they have less "margin per unit" than the more prenium model. So for exemple they'd need to sell 1000 unit to gain the same value than selling 10 top of the range models... Same thing that in the automotive world... Even the entry level Dacia (the only one doing that btw) is stepping away from that towards higher value, pricier model

what I'm annoyed by, is that we have the final nail in the cofffin for people who want to ride entry level with rim brakes. If you brake the numbers down, disc brakes don't really offer much other than less actuated braking, and I have always been glad that I can at least get a tiagra or ultegra that has proper rim brakes. And still, they had to discontinue all the rim brake groupset families, so they can push for complete adaptation of a braking technology that is heavier, harder to service, harder to transport, more expensive, and less safe. Congrats to Shimano, time to buy up all their old models before they are gone I guess.
@seraph45813 ай бұрын
How the hell are disc brakes "less safe"? Is it because the stronger braking force may send you flying or something? On being heavier, shimano 105 r7000 disc was 20g heavier than the rim break version, if that matters to you. "Harder to service" is only true if you never serviced them which you can always learn.
@Zalán-x6t3 ай бұрын
@@seraph4581 no its because it slices athletes legs open when there is a crash. I've never heard of a caliper brake causing blood loss.. The braking force issue, actually only causes lower actuation in the braking force, and I think disc rotors are absolutely justified for mountain bikes, but on non-MTB bikes the outer tyre slips way sooner than you could use out the power of a hydraulic disc.
@Zalán-x6t3 ай бұрын
@@seraph4581 Also, disc brake pads are expensive, a hassle to keep clean, and once you dirty them you have to get them filed or use strong corrosives to get the oil/dirt off them if you dont want to buy a new 20 dollar set. Why 9, 10 and 11 speed, when all is running with a 11 speed chain? For me the only reason to run 9 speed, would be a wider chain which would be more durable... My favorite for bike touring the 2x11 with the greatest range on the market😊
@peglor3 ай бұрын
The wider 9 speed chain isn't more durable. In independent tests SRAM 12 speed chains are the most durable (Unless you go to singlespeed or belt drive anyway). I'm not sure Linkglide was included in that test though. From what I can gather 9 speed chains didn't get the upgrades in metallurgy and manufacturing tech that 11 and 12 speed have, so even though all things being equal 9 speed chains should last longer purely through the bigger roller contact area reducing wear, in reality they're not running materials that are as hard and durable as 11 and 12 speed.
