Excellent information. I had to search about 20 videos before I got this answer. Definitely a stress fracture exactly as you described. I also had swelling around the bone pain point.

I definitely have symptoms of a stress fracture but my doctor says that it doesn't show on xray and they tried sonogram. But the pain is getting worse and they told me there's nothing they can do for me other than give me pain meds that doesn't work at all. I don't know what else to do. I feel like this is going to be painful forever.

Sometimes the bone can have a stress reaction that isn't a full on stress fracture. A boot to offload could be helpful.

@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy that's exactly what it is. Had an mri and had to take 3 months off because it was extremely painful with the boot on. Just completed my last day of physical therapy but it needs more time to heal 100%. It's only a little bit of pain but luckily my job is mostly sitting down. Hopefully someday it'll heal completely.

@Note9981-bf2cf an update. I am 99.9999percent better but only because I had to stay home for 4 months. My doctor told to pretend that my bone is broke and to put zero weight for that time. That meant using crutches even going to the bathroom. I was skeptical but after spending 4 months home on medical leave I was on light duty at for 6 months until very recently. I'm not running but I've kept up with my rehab at home. Before I couldn't stand for a minute without pain. Went to boston last week and I must have walked for 2 hours straight and I don't feel any pain. I had extremely high pain before. There were days I cried because it was so bad but I'm happy to say with time and rest and a ton of patience I'm better. The .01 percent feels like a void in my shin. Can't explain but when the weather is bad it just feels like some hollow space that's missing. Other than that I'm good. Another bad thing is I gained a bunch of weight. Now trying to lose it but my running days are over at least for now. New found weight I don't want to crush the progress I made. I really hope you get better because I know very well how painful it is but don't lose hope. Just have to find the right doctor that will help you.

i’ve had bilateral stress fractures before, during my last football season. Then after a long time in PT was clear to practice again, and it still always felt weird. I’ve been practicing all off season and tried track for like a week before i thought it was a bad idea because my legs started hurting too much. And took 2 weeks off my football practice, went back to it for about a month then, went to do 1 on 1’s with a friend and had to run bare foot and am having similar pain now to when i had the fracture. Almost a dull ache right now, (thought it was a good idea to not do much until i can go see my orthopedic in 2 weeks) but i have collapsed arches and when i taped them and hiked up super steep switch backs for a week without taking ibuprofen, i was fine. I tried a quick mile run yesterday and felt like normal, shin pain, but not localized. I don’t think it’s a fracture because i’ve tried pushing as hard as i can in the bones and it doesn’t hurt, occasionally i’ll find a spot that feels bruised but not what they used to be. The pain can jump up to my knee and upper shin, then back down to where the old ones used to be. So i have no clue what the hell is going on.

Hey Aidan, sounds like you have a lot going on! Since you have a history of stress fractures, it's always a concern that they could return. Although, with all of the activity you've been doing it's a possibility that it could just be shin splints too. I would try easing off of running for a while and doing some anterior tibialis strengthening, here's a video we did on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/on3Ep4N6mbV3Y7s If easing off of activity and focussing on strengthening doesn't help at all after about two weeks, then I would suggest getting an x-ray to rule out the stress fractures.

I definitely was misdiagnosed with shin splints in basic training in the military and other times definitely having stress fractures (which I’ve had uni and bilaterally a few times through out my life). It was extremely painful and wouldn’t get better with stretching and warming up the muscles. The pain would continually get worse and was excruciating. Got to the point I was in massive pain and was able to get on profile (military doctors note for gym class) for a week and a half, just long enough for it not be as painful to run on for my final PT test. Our last week being the last classes, cleaning everything up, inspections, and graduation which wasn’t as grueling physically. But still took a couple months to heal up but have had them a couple of times in my life especially when I’ve got heavier and was trying to get back into exercising with running to lose my lazy weight and regain speed and endurance. Have also had shin splints which are annoyingly painful but nothing like stress fractures, especially when you can’t stop physical activity while having it/them. Also got one while doing taekwondo kicks again to heavy bags/padded poles and over doing it while trying to building up my bone density, kicking power, and speed.

So i just finished boot camp and throughout the entirety of it, i had extremely painful shin splints that would flare up even when walking but they would get 100x worse when i ran and after that i started having a very sharp pain on the inside of my shin. Fast forward to the end of boot camp where i finally decided to go to medical after some x rays i found out that i had a "stress injury/fracture" i forget which one, but i was told that extra bone and calluses were grown in the damaged parts of my shin and that it was on the back end of healing. So with that info i was wondering if you could answer 2 questions: 1. Are those parts with extra bone more or less susceptible to re injury or not 2. Is my issue a stress fracture or something else? Sorry for the long ass 5 page essay.

Is it possible to have both a stress fracture AND a shin splint? I have symptoms of both. My symptoms of a shin splint are that sometimes depending on what type of exercise I do, it hurts on the muscle, usually the anterior side, (on the outside) but sometimes it hurts on the inside muscle. My symptoms of a stress fracture is that it hurts in one spot, feels bruised in that one spot, and hurts more as I work out/dance/exercise on it. It has also been hurting for 5 weeks, and seems to be getting worse. What do you think?
@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy
@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Lauren! It sounds like there is definitely a chance you could have a stress fracture just based on that information. In theory, yes it is possible to have both. But if the fracture is present it could also be causing all of that. I would recommend getting an x-ray if it has been that long without improvement in order to rule out the fracture. Once you know for sure it will be clearer how to proceed!

Hi, I’m experiencing pain on the inside of my shin after increasing my running mileage quite quickly, it feels like if you were to poke a bruise but I only feel it on the bone when either pressure is applied to the specific area or heavy impact. However when I run the pain generally goes away after a mile or so (hence the confusion). I also feel only minimal twinges when I walk

Can’t tell on an x-ray i went to a scan on nuclear medicine before they found mine. It hurt like a bruise being poked and often if i ran a few miles it would start to feel better till my feet hit the floor in the morning. I can only suggest if your getting nowhere with doctors then definitely ice daily and give yourself 4-6 weeks of biking elliptical swimming anything to allow the bone to heal.

In the case of a shin splint, can you see a photo showing swelling around the bone on X-RAY?
@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy
@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy 2 ай бұрын
Typically if you have what is now commonly referred to as a "bone stress reaction" you can see signs, possible swelling on an x-ray. A bone stress reaction is on the spectrum of a stress fracture. There may not be a definite line of a fracture but they can tell the bone is headed in that direction and that you need to rest.

Hi, I'm a little confused about my situation. I tend to get really bad pain in my both my shins (inner side). The major chunk of the pain is in a specific spot but it slightly travels too. I go running every alternate day and the pain starts after my 2nd run and just gets worse over time, I can't even sit with my legs underneath me (standing/walking doesn't hurt but putting pressure on it or touching the spot hurts A LOT) The problem is if I stop running, it gets better in a few days but whenever I start again the pain is back. Ive tried all different running techniques and stretches as well (Kinesiology Tape too). Nothing works. I really enjoy running and idm resting for a few weeks (I've done that) to let it heal but when I start again the pain is back.

Im not sure which one i have or if i even have either if them. I had shin splints which got treated i did rehab than rested for two weeks went back to badminton sessions with no pain. Than i moved around a little in the park playing casual badminton with friends barely did any running ( with shoes not meant for sports) and boom the pain is back. I went to the gym for crossfit training right after which is where I felt my shin aching as i started doing knee pull ups. Its been 2 days my shins hurt a lot when i ran or jump on the tip of my toe yesterday but they feel a lot better today. I don't feel significant pain when walking or climbing the stairs but i do have some throbbing pain in both my legs while resting its not painful more like uncomfortable but i had them through my other shin splint aswell. I don't have pain when touching or my tibia just at the very bottom of my tibia a little bit above the ankle joint at both legs. Can you perhaps identify what it might be?

I have pain on the entire tibia bone facing outwards as stated only when I’m playing basketball intensely, the moment I get intense with playing it hurts a lot. How come whenever I find a channel like this that I like your physical location is thousands of miles away!!!? My workout routine has been hiking very mountainous terrain and a ten mile run on the weekend. Pain started creeping up and of course I had to ignore it until it got so bad I could barely walk. The pain was on the front of both shins but that went away within a few days of just resting. I was feeling pain on the ball of my left foot and on the inside of my ankle (which is a 25 year old sprain that never really healed from a hard landing skydiving). I went to crutches and everything is feeling better. It does feel a lot like a break (sadly I have lots of experience with breaks). I have hope that the ankle will finally heal properly! Is it possible to have a stress fracture on the bottom of my foot? Do you think I'm okay to just continue to rest and stay off it and slowly go back once the pain is gone? If I go to the doctor I'm 98% sure they'll just tell me to rest as I've been doing.

Hello! I'm a 100mi a month runner and I recently developed pain on the inside of my shinbone that I'm assuming is shin splints. its a pretty extensive area longer than 5cm and i can press on the bone itself without any pain but the softer tissue around it hurts if i press hard. My issue however is that this hurts even when I'm walking, its not debilitating just very annoying. I tried running on it for a few days and the pain didn't disappear during the activity but it did lessen. Foam rolling, stretching and advil tend to help ease the pain but never eliminates it completely. Walking down stairs and down inclines definitely exacerbates the pain, walking uphill reduces it. My concern is I've read that shin splints generally do not hurt when walking but this definitely does, and the pain is generally greater in the morning. One other thing is the pain is at its most intense if i twist or make a turn whilst running. Offhand would you say this sounds more like shin splints or a stress fracture?

Hey Nolan, a calf strain will be painful in the back of your lower leg. More in the calf or down lower in the back by the achilles. A stress fracture will be in the front of your lower leg, more on your shin bones (tibias). If it is painful in both shins, it's possible it could just be shin splints. If you are concerned about stress fractures, I would recommend getting an x-ray to rule it out. Good luck!

I've had symptoms of both for several months now and still not got to the bottom of things. X-rays showed nothing unusual. Pain is localised in one spot, however I feel completely fine when running. Currently at a reduced volume; I've substituted easy runs for bike rides or swimming. Pain is often present at rest seemingly randomly, but if I put pressure with my thumb on it it is highly tender. A month of no running didn't help. I've had orthotics fitted in, and given exercises by my physio. Highly annoying, feels like I could be just treading water so to speak I really don't know. Feels like this pain may never go away and still unclear exactly what I'm dealing with.

I'm going through the same evaluation right now for point tenderness in both shins. An x-ray will be negative if it's done too soon, less than 2 to 4 weeks, before the callus develops. An ultrasound is not a very good way of evaluating a stress fracture. An MRI is best or a triple phase bone scan. My BF is a medical director of a rehab hospital. And my doctor is a sports medicine doctor, team physician for the Olympics in several professional sports.

I've been having pain on my tibial tubercle. It's very minor but it hurts when I push on it or squat heavy. Any ideas? Thanks!
@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy

Pain on the tibial tubercle with heavy squatting could be some patellar tendonitis, so basically the tendon is inflamed and being overloaded for the stresses you're putting on it. I would try adding in some eccentric quad work, like a slow forward step down. Then work up to loading the position, especially right before squatting. Obviously it's tough to say for sure without seeing you, but I would start there!

Hi ! I have pain on my inner left tibia and it’s localised to one point mainly. It sometimes feels better when I walk but I’m at the point where I can’t get down stairs/hills or jog/run without a lot of pain coming from that area. I can walk with a small amount of discomfort. sometimes it feels as though it’s shooting pain around the localised point ? Do you reckon this is shin splints or stress fracture ?
@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy
@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! From what it sounds like, I'm leaning more towards a stress fracture due to the fact that it's localized and it's severe enough to cause pain simply walking and going down stairs. I would suggest getting an x-ray to rule it out before continuing any intense exercise, especially running. Good luck!

@@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy I am just not sure whether to go just because would they give me treatment options ? Plus if they don't show up on xrays will they help me out ? Thanks for being so helpful ! I do quite a lot of necessary walking so it wouldn't be possible for me to rest it unfortunately !

You can get a "bone stress reaction" aka stress fracture in the posterior tibia that you will feel on the back side of your shin.

Hello! It is hard to say for sure just based on this information, I would check out our video on exercises to help combat shin splints: kzbin.info/www/bejne/on3Ep4N6mbV3Y7s If after about two consistent weeks of doing these it doesn't get any better, I would recommend seeing your healthcare provider for an x-ray to rule out a stress fracture. You should also cut back your running volume slightly while doing exercises to make sure you aren't exacerbating the issue, I hope this helps!

In case of stress fracture does that mean when the bone recovers your height will increase or the shin bone length will increase
@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy
@MissionMovePhysicalTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Shubham, stress fractures are tiny micro fractures in the bone. They do not affect the length of the bone or your physical height.

I am getting ready for a body building competition and I take 10k steps day 7x a week. recently I developed pain in my tibia (sounds like shin splits). I took a few days off to rest then new pain developed--> I went to get a massage at a sports massage place but I'm afraid to do any kind of exercise because I'm scared the pain might come back or the pain gets worse. in the past I would still exercise through the shin splits and it would go away and did not bother me too much. do you think it's shin splits or could its something else

Hello! Sounds like it could definitely be shin splints. Check out our video on exercises to help combat shin splints: kzbin.info/www/bejne/on3Ep4N6mbV3Y7s if this doesn't help after a couple of weeks, then I would recommend seeing your healthcare provider for an x-ray to rule out a stress fracture, I hope this helps!

Hey Clint, I'm sorry to hear this! If you are assuming this just based on the video, I would definitely suggest getting an x-ray just to make sure, and let your medical provider guide you from there. Good luck!

My soleus turns from a rubber band to a literal bricks after I jog. I can walk far an no pain but my ankle gives out days later. If I do sprint workout I only get hip soreness. But up hill activities like hikes and jogging turns my Achilles/ soleus in to stone it’s so tight immediately after a run. It really hard to see a doc because their isn’t a test to re trigger the pain. I think I should check for a stress fracture because years after a ankle injury I still have pain where the ankle heel and Achilles meet that referees to my toes knee and back.....any thoughts? Can I just go straight to rehab?

Can you help me because I don’t know which one I have. Basically I have had shin splints before around 1 year ago, and I pushed through them causing a stress fracture on my right leg, then I stopped and healed it. And then 1 month ago, I felt shin pain in both legs and this pain reminded me of shin splints, so then I pushed through it (only for 2 days tho) and then I realized i should stop pushing and try to heal it. So now I only feel shin pain on my right leg and it’s like a generalized area of my lower inner leg, but I don’t think I have a stress fracture because everytime I run or warm up it gets better so what do I have?
