One of the many times I went to see Shinedown, I took my dad with me. My dad's a pretty stoic man and he was his usual stone-faced self for most of the concert. My old man is a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan though and I knew the second they started playing this song he would get into it. Lo and behold, as soon as Shinedown began to play this song my dad got a huge smile on his face and put his cell phone flashlight on and waved it side-to-side like everyone else was doing. He proceeded to enjoy the hell out of the rest of the concert both after this song and retroactively before it. Since my dad was so stoic most of the time when I was growing up I rarely saw him genuinely smile. So having him smile because a band I love covered a song by a band he loves is a memory I will cherish forever.

My Daddy caught me putting in a concert in my room when I was 17 thinking no one was home. This was the song I was belting when he started listening. He started recording me in his old flip phone voice recorder. Of course I was mortified when I realized he’d been listening to me and was beyond embarrassed when I found out he recorded me. He said he’d heard their cover and liked it, but when he heard his daughter belting it out it ran a chill down his spine. He had a buddy that played guitar and they would make me sing this every time they caught me together. Daddy passed in 2019 and it broke my heart clear in two. He gave me an awesome taste in music (obviously 😂) and we had such a bond over it. He always told me he was proud of me but when he heard me sing, it was indescribable for him how proud he was. I didn’t do it much in front of people but would for him. My husband and kids tell me they like the way I sing, but I believe they’re humoring me lol. I’m not saying this to fish for compliments or too my own horn by any means as I feel more like I’m caterwauling these days 🤣🤣🤣. Every time I hear their cover of Simple Man I think about my Daddy and smile. That makes this song worth more than its weight in gold to me and will always hold a special place in my heart! 💕

Thank you for sharing your story! I am sorry for the loss of your Dad and pray that you find comfort in the sweet memories! I grew up on the original from LS (one of my Daddy's all time favorites). When Shinedown first released this, Daddy heard this version as a short ring tone on my Nokia cellphone (that's been a minute... lol) He asked me to let him hear the whole song of their version. He started crying and said that it felt like when he heard LS for the first time. He was super young when he lost his Mom at 21 (his Dad at 17), so that song was one of the only times I would see him tear up. Not long after Daddy heard this version, I lost him. He was 52 and I was 22. I will be 43 at the end of the month and no matter how many times I hear either version, it chokes me up. Every time I have heard them do this live ... water works! I know if he was still with us, he would be going to SD shows with me and my husband. Ahhh how I wished! 😁

Every time I listen to this, tears, tears of joy, languidness. I think, "pure soul". Grew up in Appalachia. Had the standard "hard knocks" Appalachian upbringing. I was born in FL, raised in VA, and live in WV currently. This is one of those songs which tells a story that many a young man lives. It really hits "all the feels" as is said in trendy pop culture. My grandfather and uncle were both army infantry. Both fought in wars that never ought to have been. Both came home and were Simple Men, working in a poultry hatchery for thirty to forty years each. Left huge shoes to fill my Pap, did. Uncle is still a Simple Man for now. He, too, will leave huge shoes. So, yeah this song "gets me" and as I think, is pure soul. I love Skynard's original but damn, Shinedown blew it the fuck away, in a very good way. :) :D

My father never danced a day in his life. Not even with my mother. I worried in secret what would happen on my wedding day when the father daughter dance was expected by the guest. My rock, my best friend, my life teacher showed up at my door one day and say "ok little girl here's the deal. I pick the song but you gotta teach me how to dance bc I don't know how." Awh! That made me cry like a baby! I am so glad that you have that perfect memory! I lost my Dad at 22, Mom at 25, met my Hubby at 27, and married at 28 (Hubby was 29). We just kind of skipped over the daughter parent stuff for me (all of my grandparents were gone before I was 12 and I'm an only child). I did highly encouraged Hubby and his Mom to have the mother son dance. He really was not wanting to because he felt it would be awkward since we weren't having bride father dances, but I highly encouraged him to. We lost his Mom the day after his 40th birthday, which was just over 4 years ago. He recently told me how torn he was about doing it because he didn't want it to feel like he was"show boating" on "the bride's day" since my parents wouldn't be there. He then teared up while telling me that he knew he married the right woman because not many could be that selfless on "a bride's day". He said that especially since now that we've lost his Mom (his grandma in 2018 and his brother last year) that it meant the world to him, even more than he thought it would. I was trying to make him smile and said , "I wasn't being selfless, I just saw how your dance moves were going and I thought we only needed one known embarrassing dancer in this family. It was just about preserving family cred." He started laughing so hard that he started crying and then he lost his breath. 🤣

Lynyrd Skynyrd did this song first. I used to listen to it back in the 70s. I knew all the words in the 70s. Shinedown did a much more soulful version of it. Both versions are great, but the words are the same, the message is the same, the feeling is the same decades later. I'd like to think I'm that kind of guy. One who has learned from his mistakes, one who helps others, one who has the ability to know when he has done wrong and when he has done good and chooses to do good whenever he can. Not a great man, just a good man. A simple kind of man. I think that is something all decent men should aspire to.

This.. is by far, one of my absolute favorite covers. I give respect to the original, for this wouldn’t exist without it, but firmly believe that this rendition is immaculate. A masterpiece of a cover.

Phil Medarac I absolutely agree.. my song to my son.. because a all these things are what I as a mother want for him. He just left for basic training. The distance hurts but I couldn’t be prouder of the young man he has become and will become.. this song holds a very special place in my heart!
@zoegartham3124 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you, Phil. I just listened to this version, followed by the original, and I got the impression that this song highlights the very best of what makes each one an artist. Skynard has a good voice, but it is the guitar instrumental parts where he really shines, and it is clearly evident in the long(er) breaks between the verses, the way he clips the end of each vocal line succinctly, that sort of thing. It feels like the words are merely there to break up the guitar solos. Brent Smith, on the other hand, has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard, and he absolutely kills it on this song. The octave jumps, holding out the notes at the end of each phrase and lyrically merging them into the next one... it's enough to give you chills. In a good way, of course. Shinedown's rendition of Simple Man is all about his voice, and emphasizing the words of the song, with the music there to back him up, which is different from how Skynard's feels, where the lyrics are sort of backing up the music. All in all, they are both wonderful songs and worthy of being remembered and praised for their own merits, rather than pitting one against the other, saying X version is better than Y version.
@SilverVayne4 жыл бұрын
I feel the same way about this song and Cradle of Filth's cover of Iron Maiden's Hallowed be thy Name. If you're into heavier music like that. So glad the original exists, but what they accomplished with the covers is brilliant.
@tashaevans76482 жыл бұрын
Truly the best cover song ever with a legendary set of pipes like only a select few. That said original music creation is the true greatness that can only be imitated there after. Even if a once in a generation voice blows the vocals into the heavens of greatness by making the song his own while respecting the original's soul, it's still copying another artist's lyrical & musical compostition which is the true greatness of any song. But some like Hendrix' cover of Dylan's All Along the Watchtower is a rare example of the cover artist recreating the original to a different version not true to the original, yet so great that the cover artist is recognized as the creating artist. Shinedown did a dedication at Ronnie's niece's request which he put his own stylistic changes to, while remaining true to the root of the song. Greatest cover ever, but not better as the creation is the craft, not the incredible cover.

My dad's very close cousin passed away on May 1, 2018. This was his favorite song, and because my dad was a singer, they asked him to sing it at his rosary. On May 4, my dad got up and sang through his grief. He sat down, fist bumped my aunt, and slumped over. My beautiful, wonderful dad had a heart attack and passed away in front of most of his family, including his own mom, aunt, my mom, and my sister. I was not there because I had strep throat, but I am thankful that my kids did not have to watch their grandpa die. You can actually look up Simple Man cover Alfred Contreras and see him sing. He had the heart attack within minutes of the performance, and was pronounced dead less than an hour later. This song absolutely devastates me, it will be 3 years next week and I can barely stand to listen to it.

Your dad was feeling pretty great when he was taken, but the grief and the extra emotion [anxiety,etc from performing] from the singing was too much for the heart... Honesty, I cannot think of a better way to go, surrounded by friends and family and just sang your heart out. I can understand how hard that would have been for those present, going thru that... He is just sleeping, and you will see him again make your dad proud do as he taught you and use your head and morals -GB

This song was always dedicated to my Son, it was from about 4 years ago I guess. The first time I had found out my baby boy was using heroin. I can't tell you as a Mother how I possibly felt. Really knocked me to my knees. It was soul shattering. I prayed all day, everyday for over two years. And I prayed as hard as you could possibly pray for some one. This song made me cry but also gave me hope and strength. I find myself in the current time with tears rolling down my face. My son is using once again. The difference is I have newly been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and have to dig down so deep again and pray he makes it through this round. Like so many rounds before it . I am hoping and praying that things get better for all of us. The world's been a pretty hard,cold place lately. But I, and all of us out there have to remember... There is someone up above 🙏 to just be simple, and always value "the little things". They are so very important. Thank you from my heart Shinedown for yet MORE strength. I love you guys. And I love all of you. God bless us all. ✌ ✌ ✌ ✌ ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🎼🎸🎸🎤🎤🎶🎶

I've listened to Shinedown on and off since I was in high school, and I never listened to this song before until now. This gave me the chills because Brent's voice is so powerful. You can actually hear the emotion in his voice and I really love it. This was definitely an awesome cover.

If you want to see a real in close person take on this song take a look at the video "Shinedown in My house" It's just the guitarist and Brent in a living room with some people around drinking beer, insane. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5Dcc4d_oNyLpaMsi=ILKnGfaTqkY5EcoG

@@nicholasmallory4084 Maybe a little Sound of Silence by Disturbed?David Draimen knocks a much loved duo with a platinum song from the ‘70’s - out of the park! Simon and Garfunkel gelled SO well… with all their classics, I never thought anybody would ever outdo them, but I was wrong. That’s OK… they still have a lot of beauties (especially) on their Greatest Hits album. Those two (very quickly) didn’t personally get along… so they parted ways. It was a musical tragedy. But, when they sang together… I don’t even have words. Now that I think about it, I actually have an example. They did a concert with thousands of people in the audience. It was just the two of them, a microphone stand, a stool and a guitar. The entire audience fell totally silent…but, when they were done, the audience went crazy with applause, whistles and such. The moment Paul Simon started playing his guitar for the next song… Then they again, fell silent. Certain bands or people… Their music will always be there after they are gone. But, when you hear your grandchildren listening to and singing songs that were popular/well known and one of *your* favorite bands (single artist or duo) when you were growing up? That’s when you know how good a certain band really was; when three generations later, their songs are still loved…Not just “still out there“. Unfortunately, I have never even heard of this band before. I happen to be watching a movie trailer and a song was playing in the background and I just HAD to know who they were. Well, I haven’t stopped listening since I found them. Cheers and God Bless! 9/20/24
