When the rule came in I was pretty devastated, looking back I think something had to be done, however I think a blanket ban went too far and many legit techniques were lost. In competitions drop Kata guruma was so effective that it was almost who could avoid it best won. I used ankle picks in combination with O uchi and also Te guruma as a counter (especially to Uchi mata). Maybe they could come back as a counter, or used in combination, but banned as a direct attack.

Personally I would allow leg grabs techniques that are not popularly associated with wrestling like the morote gari and kuchiki taoshi..leg grab techniques that are judo techniques such as te guruma, sugui nage, kata guruma (old school with leg grab) should be allowed..and leg grabs after a kake should also be allowed..for example, after you execute a kouchi makikomi, you immediately grab the leg for the takedown..that will make judo more interesting

Always allow attacks with one arm beneath the belt. That way we win back kata-guruma, sukui-nage etc. As for two armed attacks, allowing for one in each match sounds OK with me. But even if you bring them back fully, I think the art will find counters.

Very nice points made there. I like Neil Adam's proposal along with Chadi about the hand lift up, and Shintaros point about lifting somebody from turtle . About leg locks I think they are dangerous , a way to bring them back is to promote self defence judo more in separate hours than the Olympic or competitive judo. They are giving newaza a bit more time now so let's hope for the best!

Particularly i think that are some great ways to do a "all-allowed-judo-tournament". Leg grabs: You can do shots, but, you have to alternate with other techniques. Something like i just did a try on the legs, my next technique have to be another one that doesn't involve leg grabs. Than, after the last one, i can grab the leg again and on it goes. Alternating other techniques with leg attempts. Ne waza: This one i don't think that will ever be implanted, since it involves change the format of the competition to much. Anyway, i'm thinking in something like the following -> Competitions with, necessarily two rounds. Round one, only stand up techniques with the leg grab rule from above activated, no newaza allowed. Round two, the fight begins stand up and the only way you are allowed to bring the other guy down is by technique (no guard pulling allowed), but only newaza scores and end (submissions etc) the fight. Any newaza techniques is allowed, the only exception is neck and spinal locks. (I don't think ankle, knee's and leg lokcs in general are really that dangerous. It just looks like it is because the majority of the grapplers don't train them very much. Here in Brazil, in Luta Livre Esportiva, leg locks in general are "their thing" and yet it's extremely rare to see someone with a injured ankle or knee. Why? They just train that stuff all the time. The winner would be the one who wins two rounds. If it comes to a draw the fight goes to a third round with "no rules" (you can score by a proper throw or takedown, leg grab rules activated, you can do newaza without time limit as long as you take the opponent down by proper technique). Another rule that maybe necessary in this format is this: You can force a man to fight stand up, but you can't force a man to fight on the ground. If in the third round the other guy bring you down, but don't engage newaza you are obliged to standup again. Sitting/lying on the ground and pull guard or wait for the opponent is fault. (Like Bruce Lee used to say: "If i know you're a ground fighter and you sit on the ground waiting for me i would just walk around you and let you there waiting. I wouldn't have a reason to engage." I would pay easily to see a tournament like this.

I don't mind leg attacks being banned in comp. however i think recreational clubs should still train them because its apart of the curriculum. judoka should know how to attack the legs, and competition it just one of the facets of judo so i dont mind that its not allowed in comp. however, there are times where guys will come to our dojo and just only shoot for legs in randori because its all they know how to do, so i also agree with Travis' comment about "leg grabs are too easy, its instant gratification" and constantly diving for the legs and not learning anything else... whats the point of learning judo at that point? sometimes ill do randori with an ex-wrestler at our dojo, and i really like the head in low single. i dont know what you'd call that in judo. we also did an interesting te guruma variation. kuchiki taoshi is fun too.

But a problem about leg grabs not being allowed in competition is there will be little focus/practice in non competition too. I even remember a video from Chadi stating older people coming to a Judo dojo might not get much attention from the teacher just because they won't go into competition. My point here is: people who won't go into competition may not get enough attention, and likewise techniques which won't go into competition will also not get enough attention.

No on leg grabs in competition, fine to do them in modified dojo rules. If you want to leg grab do wrestling. Leg grabs with cloth make it easier to score. They weaken most peoples throws cause they take the easier route to score vs refine a throw.
@LongShotMartialArts
@LongShotMartialArts 3 жыл бұрын
I think an alternative may be that if you grab the legs you can go both hands at the same time. BUT you can not put your knees on the mat, both knees off the mat until you are landing your throw. This way you would have to get much closer to access the legs and would have to be within grip range. In order to deal with the gripping this would require you to stand more upright prior to your leg attack.
@Chadi
@Chadi 3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps but not going on the knees will bring a lot of rounded backs though
@LongShotMartialArts
@LongShotMartialArts 3 жыл бұрын
@@Chadi That's exactly the point. My assumption is that not being able to touch knees to the mat will require a more well thought out approach instead of people diving in from so far away like Shintaro pointed out. I'm sure there would need to be a lot of experimenting to see if it might work with the existing rules. I thought it might be worth being involved in the leg grab conversation. Allow leg grabs but penalize them somehow if they miss. I.e. if someone goes for Morote Gari and Uke sprawls successfully so the opponent ends up on the ground (i.e. on their knees - Yuko, on hands and knees - Wazari, flat on belly - Ippon) then you would have a somewhat realistic simulation of risk and reward.

Having used a morote-gari in self defense ( automatically employed if after getting punched in the face to get my assailant on his back immediately) , I think it definitely needs to be preserved in the Judo curriculum. In competition, i don't mind its absence; I agree that if it is used again, we need to use it skillfully and not in the 'wrestling manner'. The aesthetics of Judo in sport are really quite good now, although I'd like to see Kata Garuma, which has the leg grab element, reinstated. Kata Garuma is quite a stunning throw, and was of course developed by Kano himself. What of Kani Basami ? Banned because of that injury to Yamashita ?

turtle is a bad position if you just sit there. If you use it as a transitional position its great. A lot of escapes from bad positions in mma involve getting off your back i to turtle, and then standing up.

If leg grabs are so good, why has the USA Judo lagged in international Judo competition when we have the largest wrestling program and pool from 3to22yo?
@Chadi

They have their place, no one said they're the best

@@Chadi , what I mean is, leg grabs work. But if leg grabs are so effective wouldn't the country with the largest pool of wrestlers that grow up with leg grabs be on the international podium for Judo? Now it could be argued the USA does not state sponsor Judo, which limits it's pool. Related is big money from professional and college sports draw the more athletic talent. Leg grabs in competition will make Judo a more complete art to have an easier time transferring to other sports such as Sambo, mma, bjj. But the lack of them is what seperates the arts as well. An artificial way to force big throws. This forces athletes to develop throws over easier scoring techniques such as morote gari or leg grab ouchi gari. What I'm saying is there are pros and cons to leg grabbing. To keep the art, and make it more complete train leg attacks. But for competition having leg grabs has pros and cons. Thank you for your videos and research.

It's absolutely ridiculous they banned leg grab techniques from Judo, why not just create a freestyle and Greco-Roman division? Don't take away only add! Its a shame judo has chosen to minimize grappling to maximize the throw Just look at the success BJJ has had with judo newaza its starting to look like modern judo is significantly more dangerous than kodokan Judo and far more dangerous than bjj
