In my 4th grade, I'd a really awesome lady as my english teacher. I remember the day when she made us sing this song after writing the lyrics on the board. It was a free class, we sang it along her. We all were so cheery and innocent back then...only to not know that she'd leave the school the next year. I haven't known about her ever since then. No contacts, nothing. Don't know if she'll EVER see this comment, but if by any chance she does I want to say her, that thank you so much ma'am for making my 3rd and 4th grade years so memorable. Now that I finally found this song, all your remembrances are rushing back to my mind. Lots of love from one of your 4th graders from FBS, Muskan❤️️

I left my family, friends and my hometown and came to this new country when I was 15, I didn't speak the language then and struggled to make friends, find jobs and to survive in this foreign society. Whenever I'm feeling lost, the song can always take me back to my home and the simple and happy life I used to have. I still remember the day I left. The train slowly accelerating and my hometown station soon became miles away. Now here I am in this country, still trying so hard to achieve my dreams. This song is my nostalgic song, my stay strong song, and also a song to remind me of where i came from. It literally means the whole world to me

This song reminds me of my Father in the 80's, he used to play this song in our cassette player when I was 6 or 8 years old. God is so gracious when I ask our LORD if the end times is already at hand? Then this song just suddenly popped out in my mind today(10/23/18)after 40 years? Now I fully understand the meaning of the lyrics it talks about the coming "Rapture" when all of us believer of Christ will meet Him in the clouds.

The 60s, 70s and 80s were about the song, the music. Not always about profit, not about 'target audiences'. Songs made it because they were good, not because people were brainwashed into buying' it' because the radio played nothing but 'it' or as now, the net pugs' it' constantly. I have never liked Timberlake... but this is actually quite good and he has learned to act pretty good as well. A grumpy oldie even grumpier now!!

It's always reminded me of my grandpa. He was a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad, and the train passed by their house. He died when I was 5, and I knew he was more than 500 miles away. My grandparents had petitioned Washington, for train whistles to blow at intersections after my uncle was killed by a derailed train, that had struck a truck at an intersection. This song has held a place in my heart, from the first time I heard it.

Some facts about this song: The original was by a female folk singer named Hedy West who was born and raised in Georgia. The original song was released in 1961 during a revival boom of Folk genre, and the song had a few titles, which were "500 Miles Away From Home" and "Railroaders' Lament". The song borrowed a lot of the South's fiddle styles and was actually more quick-paced to follow the classic Folk genre and style. The original song also has a few lyrics that were cut off: "If my honey said so I'd railroad no more I'd sidetrack my engine and go home! And go home And go home And go home And go home I'd sidetrack my engine and go home!" "I told my little letter Just as plain as I could tell her She'd better come along and go with me! Go with me Go with me Go with me Go with me She'd better come along and go with me!" "My clothes are all worn My shoes are all torn Lord, I can't make a living this a-way! This-a way This-a way This-a way This-a way Lord, I can't make a living this a-way!" "If this train runs me right I'll be back tomorrow night I'm coming down the line on number nine! Number nine Number nine Number nine Number nine For I'm coming down the line on number nine!" The style Justin Timberlake decided to do a rendition of was Joan Baez's, a British acoustic and folk artist, which was recorded in the 70's if I'm not mistaken.
@erwalkerca9 жыл бұрын
Bennie Khou Joan Baez is very much American and was born on Staten Island, New York. Her mother, who was also named Joan, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and her father was born in Mexico, though he moved to NY when he was two. She was part of the folk music scene in the '60s and was once romantically involved with Bob Dylan.

+Shree Nandan Das let me correct you on a small point. The Brothers Four were just one of many artists that recorded a version of this song. The writer, as explained by others, is Hedy West, taken from some of the old railroad songs from the 1800s. Look up Hedy West on Wikipedia for more info.
