My husband-D-and I became friends in our second year of university. In our third year, I changed university and we wrote letters to each other. The summer between junior and senior year, he went to Mexico with his university and I broke up with my abusive boyfriend. D’s mom asked me to pick him up from the airport on his way home from Mexico. I was standing around with all the parents when I saw him walk in. He was talking with his professor. He stopped mid sentence, dropped his bags and walked over to me. He put his arms around me and said, “I was hoping you would be here.” I knew then I would marry this man. This past June we celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary.

My parents told me to look at someones worst qualities and ask myself, "Knowing that these will probably get worse as years go on, can I live with them?" I said yes and over fifty years later we're still reading to each other. Hearing isn't as good as it use to be.
@gingerweasel211 ай бұрын
That's a great way to look at it. So many people seem to do the opposite, hoping or expecting that they can change or fix the "problem" areas, and proceeding on that assumption, rather than acknowledging that that *is* who this person is, and especially not expecting that it might get *worse*!

This episode was a master class in relationships. Matthew, what your father told you was what a very wise man told me back in the day. I was in my twenties and going through a divorce from an 8 year marriage to a man I married after knowing him only 2 months. Yes, I was young and pretty stupid for a rather intelligent young lady. He said you need to season your mate. Then he explained to me exactly what that meant. And it was nearly verbatim what your Dad had said. I have passed this nugget of wisdom to all the other gals and guys who were contemplating long term commitments ever since. My second marriage lasted 37 years and we raised 5 amazing children together until, sadly, his death from ALS. Fighting fairly is also a key as your book has said. Thank you for this episode ❤❤

This is just a personal story, but probably someone needs this. I was in a relationship with someone with mental health problem, while me myself isn't healthy, like at all. His bad days were triggering me, making bad impacts on me, especially my own mental health. I always felt bad for him, and at the end I kinda noticed that what I felt was more like pity than love and decided it wasn't healthy to continue a relationship based on that feeling. I felt really guilty for leaving him, but then again I need to concentrate on my own mental health first. I'm a lot better now, still not in any relationship since I feel like I will ended up hurting the other party if I forced myself to open up and accept them, like what I did to my previous partner 😅 I'm trying my best to love and cherish myself first since loving other would be impossible if I can't love myself first. I want to have a healthy relationship after all. Watching you guys is really comforting! I feel like I probably might be able to move forward.

if it makes you feel a little better to hear from someone who's been in a similar situation - my first partner (back in 2016...!) had mental health issues, and when those became serious, they lead to an event which was traumatic for the both of us, but specifically caused mental illness in myself. I also had a close friend around that time, and likewise (in fact: more so), we were both in really difficult places with our mental health, and I know those years were more traumatic for me _because_ I was dealing with somebody else's problems on top of my own (to be clear: they were always lovely and understanding and respectful, and I'm glad we did stay friends then, but it was a lot). And at some point, I realised my friendship was founded on fear for their health / situation, instead of love / affection. - I ended up breaking up with that partner, because I was no longer able to sustain a romantic relationship. But!!! Years have passed now, and I'm still close friends with the person I mentioned: leaving school meant we had more distance, and our mental health problems are both managed so much better than they were, and we have such healthier boundaries. And I'm no longer scared for them. I've also finally managed to access therapy, and a year into that I still have a lot to work through, but my own mental health has gotten worlds better than it was. And I'm in a relationship now, with somebody who - on the second day of knowing me - walked in on me having a breakdown, and offered nothing but kindness and practical help. He's known about my mental health issues the whole time, and the first time he stayed with me coincided with me losing a loved one (talk about being thrown in the deep end!), and he continues to be nothing but caring and supportive. I think it's important to be aware of your own mental state, and if you feel stable enough that a relationship would work for you right now - I did choose to not seek a relationship for years myself, in part for those reasons - but it doesn't mean that you can't be both mentally ill *and* in a relationship that works! With the right boundaries and communication, and after properly assessing if you can each genuinely meet each other's needs and all, these things can absolutely work out!

You remind me of my parents who have been together for over 48 years! Despite the “no money” “tiny house” and even a disability that is not bad but could add extra stress. You fell in love and took on eachothers “baggage” . It’s so exciting watching you and how beautiful your life long relationship is evolving! My parents had many of the same hardships z as md struggles. It’s all about accepting one for who they are and marriage is really about saying.. “ I want to take care of this person for life” . Good for you! Love you two!

But that statement about the persons problems you can deal with is so true. After dating for a couple months we went a weekend without seeing eachother. The things I missed the most at times were the things that annoyed me most. Its that acceptance and realization that you love all of them. Been married over 30 years now.

Paul, you are absolutely right. Every couple has disagreements. Always. The key is whether or not you can resolve the disagreements without hurting each other. My family does this by respecting that the other has reasons for what they do/think/whatever. So we seek out the reasons, and usually we realise that hubby knows something I don't, or I know something that he doesn't. We sometimes even solve disagreements with "pending further research, you're probably right". You need to come to an agreed way of solving disagrements to have a healthy relationship. I don't care if it's a knock down drag out argument which has the neighbours calling the police (the neighbours might care), or a calm and rational discussion full of mutual respect. Just agree on a method, and you have one of the ingredients of a great marriage. (Mind you, I'd hate Matthew's pranks.)
