Upgrades For My Broken AMG GT R?

Unfortunately my AMG GT R is the next to fall foul of my curse in Monaco! Last year it was the 675LT, thus year the Mercedes suffers an unlucky issue, which isn't related to the tuning. Before diagnosing the problem and showing you a new upgrade on the Porsche 911 GT3, it's a visit to Top Marques to take a look around!

First I'm glad the beast of the black hell is getting looked after so well. Second that Yacht was amazingly sick! Third I love those new harnesses! Great video. Yeah the lack of mesh in the front area is a design oversight. My coolers at 2500 miles have already taken lots of beatings and at some point they will fail as well. Hopefully Mercedes will fix this under warranty and not try to stick us with the repair bill. I remember my 991.1 GT3 had a similar issue but it was rather an opening inside the wheel well that leads to the front coolers and the sticky tires were kicking small rocks inside this opening until the cooler was eventually punctured. Porsche stepped up and fixed the cooler under warranty and installed a mesh to cover the opening, and hopefully Mercedes would do the same.

Fun fact: those ZP Cup 2s were originally made for the Corvette. They significantly trade off wet traction for a bit more dry traction. Insane tires! I say go for all the aero mods, Tim. As long as the color or weave matches your OEM parts.

Every year I always look forward to your Monaco vids Tim, just so on point! And I never knew about that design element on the AMG GTR, seems really odd for them to not put some kind of grating to block the intercoolers from the factory. This way you don’t run into an issue like you’ve encountered. I hope Mercedes is going to just take care of that for you. But overall fantastic coverage and I can’t wait for the next vid! 👍🏻👌🏻💪🏻

Shmee150 that’s really unfortunate, as it literally takes the vehicle out of commission. Luckily you are somewhere with two of your vehicles, so you’re not sidelined. But Mercedes should really think about launching a recall and fixing the issue entirely. Really loving the new RennTech exterior package, hope you end up adding it to your GTR, especially that two stage wing! Oh and those new Sparco harnesses in the GT3 look absolutely perfect, well done mate! 👍🏻👏🏻🍻

There is a balance between protection and restricting airflow. A wire mesh with 3mm openings would block most stones big enough to do damage, yet probably not restrict or slow airflow more than 15-20%. But that might be too much. I've messed with fans to cool amplifiers, and you might be surprised how much loss there is with even a fairly open looking screen.

I agree with you Tim, the lack of stone guards on the coolers seems a bit of an oversight on AMG's part for something that is that essential. Hope they do you right and install something to help protect them from future damage. Enjoyed the video, keep up the great work. :-)

A client with the same problem came into our workshop.Had to replace the lower radiator.There isn't a solution really.If you try to close up the radiator,you deprive it of cooling.If you open it up,it is vulnerable to stone chips.Something like this happening is very rare.

I like the idea of Paint protection that you Guys add to your nice cars ! BUT it would make sense ( seeing that I have been doing the same on my "normal" road cars for years) PUT EXTRA PROTECTION IN PLACE FOR YOUR RADIATORS. I always add extra mesh in front of my radiators !! Good luck with the fix :)

Most important is a screen in front of the intercooler. My feeling on aero upgrades is will you benefit or does it just look cool. Me personally I would feel stupid if I wasn't able to get faster lap times with more aero bits. I believe their called ricers, who have fake aero. The standard rear spoiler from the factory amg-gt, It looks like it could be more serious like your rear wing you have. A rear wing that look like it might do a better job could be cool. My vote is canards and the rear wing.Only safe and reliable Engine upgrades. When adding blowers and larger turbos need better supporting parts. I'm just repeating what i've heard.

Absolutely hate the Renntech aero downgrades as they spoil the beautifully thought through bodywork design. And you really wouldn't need those upgrades unless you were racing. Tyres are lovely.

Interestingly, those Sport Cup 2 ZPs are the same tires as on the Corvette Z06 with the Z07 package. I also heard grumblings that the boys from Chevy weren't happy that Michelin so freely "gave away" their tire spec to AMG.

I had to add a grill mesh to my Cayman GTS, it also doesn't come with anything to protect the intercoolers unless you get the GT4. Always thought that was odd.

RENNtech upgrades would be amazing! What’s not to love, visually. Power wise though, some may not need it the extra hp. However, I am not one of them 😆. I say do it and get some roll races set up for some killer content ;-)
