Devin's been releasing radio friendly stuff for decades... The first Devin Townsend album ("Infinity") from 1998 is as full of tracks like this as it is with weird, experimental stuff like "Bad Devil" or "Noisy Pink Bubbles." "Addicted" is basically a radio hard rock album which he released in 2009 and is one of my favorites. "Ghost" from 2011 is an entire album of extremely mellow, soft rock. Ocean Machine has certain tracks on there which are as accessible as it gets (IE: "Regulator") for a hard rock band, and that was released back in 1997. If anything, he was getting far more success with his heavy metal band, Strapping Young Lad at the time he released "Infinity" and "Ocean Machine"... If he was doing it for financial reasons, those projects wouldn't have made sense, and breaking up SYL right as their popularity peaked back then would make even less sense. He did reform SYL a couple years after he broke it up initially... But he claimed that all the craziness in the wake of 9/11 and the start of the war on terror was his justification for reforming the band. I recall as I was lucky enough to see them live both before and after that hiatus... and they became a LOT more popular in the years after that hiatus until he disbanded them again to focus on The Devin Townsend Project for similar reasons as to why he broke up SYL in the first place. None of that sounds like a musician who has any need to make choices based on finances, it sounds like he is only at the mercy of his inspiration. He makes a good living as an independent artist; he has no record company debts to worry about or the cost of the overhead for belonging to such a large organization. He has more money than he really knows what to do with at this point, even when he spends a lot on production of his albums and his live show. Back in the late 90ies he was a lot closer to a starving artist, there were jokes about in the linear notes of the first two SYL albums, but nowadays he's pretty much the model for a successful independent artist. He really doesn't need to adjust his aesthetics to anyone.

Speaking of collaborating with Devin, you've yet to really feature long-time Devin friend and collaborator Anneke Van Giersbergen. Afaik you've only touched on her in passing one time. A grave oversight. She's an amazing singer with a unique style compared to other female metal vocalists, and a trailblazer who single-handedly popularized female-fronted metal. There's really only one place to start, and it's the song that launched her into every '90s teenage metalhead's dreams, Strange Machines by The Gathering.

Trains may be calming because of their great momentum. They don't come to sudden stops or make sudden turns. They keep a regular rhythm which you can hear as the wheels pass over the tracks. Musically this gives me a bit of "Spirits Will Collide" vibes - also a great sort of full, rich, sound from Devin (if that makes sense). :) A bit lighter, but definitely a similar vibe! Aesthetically, I love the train ride through the Norwegian countryside, it's soothing in itself! ^^

Been listening to Devin since 07, and I am so excited for this album to see what he's done over the years. Just his sound is always so full no matter the genre he does, and just having an easy listening album gets me so excited

I love that you've featured Devin multiple times on your channel. With that being said, there is one performance that stands out amongst the treasure trove of his work. Please review the death of music at the Royal Albert concert hall. 🙏🙏🙏

Oh, really enjoyed this track, and wow that’s amazing that you contributed vocals to the new Devin album! Devin’s vocals here reminded me of Neige from Alcest. Their music combines wistful atmospheres with black metal, and Neige uses both clean and harsh vocals, definitely worth checking out.

I love this direction, like the latest Deafheaven, totally reminds me of Shelter or older Alcest. The drum/guitar interplay is just beautiful here.

This is such a pretty song! I really like Devin's more relaxed stuff. It's so full, ethereal at times. The end of this song - the last few guitar notes with the clean tone - reminds me a lot of the theme tune to the 90s TV show, "Due South", which I absolutely love! And I'm almost certain that the octopus snippets were in there just for you ;-)! Thank you for the video!

I love your videos, Elizabeth. I have learned so much through them. I was listening to The Agonist and Vicky's vocals absolutely blow my mind!! I have never heard such a versatile voice (Floor Jansen comes very close), but Vicky takes it to another level. She studied opera for two years prior to discovering her other vocal abilities. I would love to hear a vocal analysis for Vicky's work :)

I cannot wait I will be seeing Devin on the Lightwork tour next year, 5 days after seeing Bloodywood. So many great bands on tour next year, I cannot wait. This song shows The lighter side of Hevy Devy, such a beautiful song, it is this diversity that makes me love Devin and his music

You and Devin are so similar, music nerds to the core - and you let us into your fantastic world occationally. It's beautiful. ❤ Also, this awesome new Devin brings me some Pink Floyd vibes. Love, LOVE IT. Devin's voice is so unique though. ❤ Deadhead will always be my favourite, she says - anxiously awaiting new music from Dev. 😅

GGGarth Richardson follows in his father's (Jack Richardson, Nimbus 9 studios) footsteps as a recording engineer and awarding winning producer. GGGarth has worked with Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Taylor Swift among many others. GGGarth has a studio called the Farm located on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, Canada. It is a beautiful location. Devin and GGGarth have create something special with this new album if the rest of the songs are of the same caliber as "Call of the Void". 🎸🎤☀😎

Yep... seems odd for Devin to be aping U2, but this definitely feels like it could be a guest vocal from him on "All That You Can't Leave Behind" or "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb". Chimey clean guitars, shimmer reverb, breathy vocals...

This was so pretty and soothing. I'm a metalhead and brutal vocals and breakdowns are usually my thing but i loved this. ❤ You got to put backing vocals on some of the songs? That's awesome! Im going to be listening to see if i can pick out your voice.

You were close, even very close regarding that there must be something more than just one vocal there. Yes, I personally am 99.99% sure that in the background, as the second voice, Anneke van Giersbergen has been working with Davin for many years. Your dear, beautiful voice. I recommend The Gathering "Strange Machines" live '96

Dev is the master at finding a place for every single element in the acoustic space of the mix, I'm so gutted I never got to run sound for him back when I was touring, came close and then I had to jump off a bloody stage to get some speaker cables... But yes, he can fill the acoustic space that we're listening to, and yet it sounds so very airy and free. And years down the line I find new bits of songs I've listened to thousands of times, and I get so excited - Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree fame (thoroughly recommend you check out his solo work, Hand. Cannot. Erase. is one of the greatest albums I've ever listened to, his voice and that of Ninet Trayb on "Routine" made me cry when I saw it at the Royal Albert Hall on the album tour. The entire sold out show was bawling their eyes out by the end. Lots of folk going "I'm not crying you're crying" and my brother and I openly weeping)

I’ve never seen train videos before this, and I agree, it’s very soothing. My feeling is that the reason why is you feel are moving steadily forward into the future on an unchangeable path so there is structure that takes away uncertainty in direction, a bit like destiny, I suppose. In planes or cars, there is always the option to veer off, stop, go, turn or change your direction. With a train, there are no options. You are on these rails until you arrive at your destination. I dunno, that is just what came to me when you asked what was so appealing about that. I hope you like the interpretation and thanks for another wonderful Devy video. More, please!
